Is it possible to beat someone who knows advanced techniques such as wave dashing and SHFFLing? A friend is going to come over my place in the future and he says he knows most of the advanced techniques in Melee. I am just starting to learn wave dashing, L cancelling and all that stuff. Is it possible that I can beat him? Or will he basically **** me every game? I main Falco he mains Sheik. Thanks guys

Since top players who use ATs fight each other all the time, I'd say yes. :troll:

More seriously, knowing ATs doesn't make one good. He'll probably have an advantage, but as long as you know what Sheik is capable of doing to you (and know how to avoid it) it'll be reasonably fair.

Oh ok..guess I'm gonna have to study the Falco-Sheik matchup then. Thanks :)

TBH, if you don't know how to SHFFL winning against someone who does is slim. Should try learning how to, its a very simple concept.

It's not just knowing ATs, as many threads pop up having people asking "why can't I beat my friends even though I know how to wavedash and he just spams moves???".

ATs are only useful when applied correctly.

Haha... This reminds me of an old sibling battle I used to have with my younger brother. He never learned any AT's, but he kicked many a backside in friendlies at a tourney once. The reason why? He reads people extremely well. Advanced techniques only add options. It's the execution that really counts. It's like on Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon where the girl has that awesome sword and the swordsmaster only had a stick. The winner? The master with the stick.

If you know how to use your stuff, you can win even without AT's.

The things to learn in order of importance:
-Your character
-Your opponent
-Your opponent's character
-ATs
-The stage

If you don't know your character, you haven't a hope in hell but anything else you can get by without, though obviously you'd do a lot better if you did.

i dont understand. ATs are a huge part of yoru character and your opponents character. if i only know fox's moveset without short hopping, l cancelling, and wavedashing, i dont know **** all in a serious tournament setting.

ATs are a prerequisite to playing the game at a high level.

...?

You should be learning ATs gradually while exploring the characters. Having some silly order where you can only practice one thing and one thing only before you move on is completely unnecessary and will most likely make improvement clunky.

And I mean, learning "your opponent", as in the player, will come naturally as you play more (for players like Mango, we're talking a few games, where as for others, it could take longer). Sure, you can put a little extra focus on it if you want, but trying to force a mental aspect when you could be improving the technical ones seems pretty ineffective if you're still a beginner (which is pretty much everyone who hasn't played against actually good players).

ATs are definitely important, but you don't need to know them to beat someone who does know them. I have a sheik player at my club(lol, sheik) who can beat me and he knows near nothing about ATs, because he knows how to combo(I don't think it's catergorized as an adv technique).

But like everyone here says, you should definitely learn them. Especially because falco can do very effective combos when he L-cancels.
Off-topic: am I allowed to post a youtube video here, because I have a great place to start learning ATs.

Yea I'm pretty sure you can post videos because I saw others do it but I'm not sure. Were you going to post the AT videos? Part 1,2, and 3?

knowing how to do advanced techniques helps, but isn't always necessary. For practice, I sometimes stop using ALL advanced techniques. It really changes your perspective on the game.

Yo, I'd say yea he has the advantage, but you can use this as opportunity to learn. The key would be learning to not get frustrated. Even if he knows ATs you can still dissect his gameplay and find habits and weaknesses to penetrate.

Good luck
