The Dublin scene is what it is because of the efforts of the players. Basically we just talk to one another. It does help that Dublin is big and has lots of people in it. Best thing I can say is start asking around for people nearby.
I've tried locally, but most people around here either don't know what Smash is, or aren't interested because it's Nintendo (if I got a euro for every time I got the "Nintendo is for kids" argument...).
Figured it'd be a longshot, but I thought I should at least ask. Some people mentioned Facebook groups or something, but... it's Facebook :p I abandoned that ship years ago, and I'm not going back.

Of course there would be a tournament on in Galway when I won't actually be there to go to it. :|

Is there ever, like, anything on around the Midlands, or is the only option to travel to Dublin or whatever?
Unfortunately, most of our stuff gets organised through FaceBook but we'll try to keep this thread as updated as possible. We also frequently use Skype like has been mentioned but it's generally really hard to organise tournaments without social media. On that note, would it be an idea to update the OP of this thread with where everyone's from, @ toadee toadee ?

I feel like Ireland in general just needs to be more open to travelling. We're not exactly a huge country and too many of us are reluctant to even get a bus for two hours to attend tournaments - tournaments don't happen on your doorstep by magic, unfortunately, especially if you live outside of Dublin/Belfast like myself and several others in this thread.

'but y'know' what?
But y'know JMiller is better than Zangrief
Also my bad, I thought you meant "WHOA ZANGRIEF IS BETTER THAN MILLER" but yeah playing a guy on FG then hearing about him later would be a strange experience for sure.

Hey guys and welcome back to another online tournament! After the delays and relative unsuccessful trial run of pools for this event, we're going to go back to a standard, double elimination bracket the whole way through. Instead, we're going to trial playing 3 stock 8 minutes!

~~~~~
Ruleset (subject to change in accordance with the upcoming UK TO meeting)
3 Stock
8 Minutes
Best of 3 for all games except Winner's Final, Loser's Final and Grand Final which will all be Best of 5
~~~~~

Starter Stages
Battlefield
Final Destination
Smashville

Counterpick Stages
Lylat Cruise
Duck Hunt
Town and City
Omega Stages*

-The player with higher seed gets striking priority in Game 1.
-Winners ban one stage in Games 2/3.
-DSR is in effect.
-*Omega Stages count as Final Destination during the striking process.
If you're unsure of details involving striking terminology and procedure, further details can be seen further down.

~~~~
As always, check out the Smash Ireland Mibbit for contacting your opponent:
https://client02.chat.mibbit.com/?channel=%23SmashIRL&server=irc.mibbit.net
We've had problems with consistently starting up to half an hour late with these events in the past. Please set a reminder on your phone or something and make sure you turn up on time! You will need to check in to play and check in opens up to an hour before the event at 1pm. Games will (hopefully) start at 2pm.
Also please come to Battlefield NI in Belfast it's cheap with three games and lots of pizza =]
Facebook does seem to be where most of the conversation takes place as far as Smash in Ireland is concerned. It might be worthwhile to join back to stay in the loop just in case something isn't posted here. But as Skarfelt said, we should try and keep the thread updated.
On another note, I'm really eager to host another tournament here in Newry. I might try and fix something up for July but I want you guys to weigh in on something. Melee will probably always be the main event but I also want to host Project M and Smash 4 in the future. Out of all the games which are one are you guys likely going to travel for?
Tbh, I'd travel 100% for any games and I'd absolutely love to go to an event in Newry as I missed the first one. I'd imagine if you get Melee and Smash 4 you'd get two different crowds attending with some overlap you might not get normally to bolster numbers which is always good whereas Melee/PM attract the same crowd, basically. That said, I ****ing love PM so I'd personally travel for that the most but y'know.
Project M is a bit tricky. I have enough TVs to run Melee comfortably but only half of them are NTSC compatible which makes it a bit harder to run Project M. That said, if I did get HD monitors to accommodate Smash 4, they could be played on those too but I want to try and stick to the CRT standard for Melee and Project M.
That's totally fair, yeah. I can't really help on the TV setups for PM but I could definitely try for Melee/Sm4sh for consoles/TVs. An event in July would probably be ideal as I believe there's another event being set up in Belfast for some time in August, so two events in the North over the Summer through each month would be awesome.
We had to change a few plans for Smash at Dragonslayers this Saturday. Sm4sh is now going to start at 2pm, Melee at 4pm and PM when Melee ends.
When you say midlands whereabouts do you mean? My friend and I were thinking of having a melee tourney set up in somewhere like Sligo, but location is really down to where there's the need for a tourney so it can be somewhat moved. Really what we're hoping for is to get people who don't know about the facebook group or even the competitive scene in general top kinda come out of their shell and show themselves around the west and midlands
Sligo would be sick for a tournament, this Summer seems packed as hell tourney lineup wise at the minute. I'll try to travel and get all the best players to travel for all the events - at the minute, Smash is very much a "Belfast or Dublin"-type deal as I understand and I want to remedy that.
Ha no way? I just moved back to Longford, lemme know if you're up for games sometime.
Oh yeah, how can I join the skype group? I sent a request to Adam Todd about a week ago but I dunno if he's been on in the last while.
This marks the first time Mint didn't win any event at all! It was totally legit that he didn't. *ahem*
Thanks to everyone for turning up and huge apologies for the massive delays throughout the day - with more communication between us and Slayers, situations like this shouldn't come up again. I hope you all had a good time regardless!
Top 3 of Sm4sh Wii U was recorded and will be uploaded soon! Over four sets, a ridiculous nineteen games were played - to say the top level Irish play is close is an understatement.
I've heard the next 24 is going to be a week or two before Q-Con so mark your calendars for the 5th/12th June or something like that. Q Con itself also has Melee/Sm4sh tourneys at it so come to those and stuff. Kbai =]
The 5th Irish online smash4 tournament is THIS SATURDAY! (16/05)
We've had problems with consistently starting up to half an hour late with these events in the past. Please set a reminder on your phone or something and make sure you turn up on time! You will need to check in to play and check in opens up to an hour before the event at 1pm. Games will (hopefully) start at 2pm.
If you're interested in tournaments or whatever, next Melee tournament is going to be Q Con on the weekend of the 19th of June and then some time in August in Belfast.
@ toadee toadee it might be an idea to put what games are going to be at each event cuz some people are only interested in certain games or whatever else. Could also put info related to Heir that a lot of Ireland are going to etc.
The Irish Summer of Smash is nearly here so I'm gonna list all the dates here that I'm aware of and also some more major ones in mainland UK. I'll list all the games I believe this group would be interested in. If I've missed anything, comment below and I'll add it. It's pretty stacked!
30/05 - Road 2 Celtic Throwdown: Galway - Sm4sh/SF4/MKX/TTT2 - Galway
https://www.facebook.com/events/780488852058149/
06/06 - Dat Splat - Sm4sh/Splatoon - London
13/06 - Sm4sh Online Tourney #6 - Sm4sh - Online
13/06 - Keep It Classy 5 - Sm4sh/SF4 - London
https://www.facebook.com/events/779141312193981/
19/06 to 21/06 - Q Con XXII - Melee/Sm4sh - Belfast
http://www.q-con.org.uk/
https://www.facebook.com/events/894034660610830/
20/06 - Road 2 Celtic Throwdown: Cork - Sm4sh/SF4/MKX/TTT2 - Cork
https://www.facebook.com/events/384688815049854/
28/06 - Smash 'n' Splat - Sm4sh/Melee/Splatoon/Mario Kart 8 - Gloucester
http://www.nintendoid.co.uk/?event=smash-n-splat
Birmingham is a £15 return flight from Dublin and the venue is £25 for a double room along.
10/07 to 12/07 - BroCon 2015 - Sm4sh/PM - Limerick
http://brocon.info/a-smashing-time/…
https://www.facebook.com/events/1483206771954429/
(Note: the ruleset is being updated to a more reasonable one)
18/07 - Newry Hosts Super Smash Bros. - Melee/PM - Newry
08/08 to 09/08 - VSFighting 5 - Sm4sh/SF4/MKX/TTT2/MvC3 - Birmingham
https://www.facebook.com/events/466420876869409/
http://www.vsfighting.com/
This will probably be the biggest Sm4sh tourney in the UK this year - flights are ridiculously cheap. Irish invasion please?!
14/08 to 16/08 - Heir II the Throne - Melee/PM - Nottingham
https://www.facebook.com/events/885592891498966/
If you've missed the details for this event all over the Smash Ireland FB group, then you must have been living under a rock... or you're not on it, fair enough. Biggest Melee/PM tourney of the year in the UK and it's also very cheap to get to with good accommodation and flight options.
22/08 - Road 2 Celtic Throwdown: Belfast - Sm4sh/SF4/MKX/TTT2 - London
https://www.facebook.com/events/983518511669172/
29/08 - Road 2 Celtic Throwdown: London - Sm4sh/SF4/MKX - London
https://www.facebook.com/groups/SmashIreland/permalink/1643862672494715/
05/09 to 06/09 - Celtic Throwdown - Sm4sh/PM/SF4/MKX/TTT2/MvC3 - Dublin
https://www.facebook.com/events/827279547320811/
http://www.celticthrowdown.com/
All culminates in this, easily the biggest Irish event ever seen! Big name Sm4sh players like JMiller, Ixis, Izaw, GP, Yackabean, PidgeY and Enki have expressed interest in coming along with some guys from Holland, France, Sweden and Norway!
There's still probably more to be announced and other tournaments I've forgotten about in England, Scotland and mainland Europe. Get hype =D
EDIT: Added Newry Hosts Super Smash Bros!
EDIT2: Added Road2Throwdown London!
EDIT3: Added Breaking Boundaries <3
wow so much going on :O.
Will definately try to go to a few but first I'll see if I even stand a chance playing competitively in Galway.
I doubt I'll get far but really want to play against high level players and maybe learn something.
Also HYPEEE :).
So for Galway this weekend, do we have to register on the Challonge bracket beforehand, or just turn up on the day?
Also, what time does registration close at on the day? Trying to work out train times - there's either one that'll be in Galway at 11.45am, or at 1.45pm (so I'd be at the venue at about 2pm). I'll try and make the earlier one, but I'd like to know if the later one is an option, just in case.
I'm not sure but normally, if there is an option to pre-reg, TOs really appreciate you using that option. Makes setting up bracket and all the rest much smoother, especially with lots of games going on.
