GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAH!!!!!!!!!! I AM SO ANGRY I AM BURNING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just got my final results back from my teacher (2 weeks late mind you). These are my grades on my tests:
C
B
B
C
B

I also made a 90% on my mid terms.
According to her this is why I failed:

"Josh, I have given you an F because you used words and other materials in your power point that we had not yet used in class. Your grammar was also somewhat bad, I struggled to understand what you said at points. I do not think you are ready to move on so I am giving you an F."

She said that at the beginning of class that if we turned in all of our HW we would score at least a D.

THIS TEACHER SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wanna know the best part? She has failed to give me all of my stuff back. I only have a few things from the entire semester. On top of that she never gave us a grade the entire way through the class. I just now found out what I had on all of those tests!
Also, over half of the class quit or flunked going through and then I believe half failed the class.
Only a 1/4 past.

With her and the parents? Uh, no. Go straight to the top. Demand a conference between you, the teacher, the principal, and your parents. Teachers never change finals if parents ***** at them, but if their boss does...

*Spanish

I used Spanish 2 grammar.
Probably because my hispanic friend critiqued it and added a little more complex words.
That would also explain why my grammar was poor. I probably pronounced the words wrong. >,<

From the looks of what you're saying, this is incredibly ********.

The only time I have had teachers say they would insta-flunk someone is if they:
A) cheated
B) plagarized
C) didn't come in to take the final

Do you have a syllabus of the class? If so, if it has the clause where you would get at least a D if you turned in all the HW, I would bring that to help plead your case.

Just make sure that you go in when you're a lot calmer than now. Although I would definately be in the same boat as you if this happened to me.

Yeah. If a parent says something, the teacher will just brush it off like dirt. If the principal says something, the teacher will have no choice, but to oblige. It would be like being held at gunpoint by the leader of a gang. Either you do as they say, or you risk getting your head blown off. That's how I see it.

I came to the class every time except for one instance where I could not get a ride.
I had a friend critique me, if that is cheating then that is absolute bull sh*t. That is just making sure that I didn't get anything wrong. Call it microsoft word for a spanish final.

Just checked the syllabus. It does not have that clause in it. ><
I do have like 20 witness's though.

To solve this I have been asking everyone and this was our conclusion:
She was rough enough on test's and stuff that everyone had a low score. So to raise everyone's grade she made the final like maybe 70% of the grade. She did specify that she wanted her students to speak spanish well before passing. She also said that she will get mad at anything that is not in spanish 1 (I guess that includes nouns). So because I done this she gave me an F on the final which brought my entire grade down to an F.

The dumbest thing is this:
We were supposed to write 12 pages with 3 to 4 sentences about ourselves for our powerpoint using grammar from the book. Everyone in the class called BS on that. I was the only one to write 12 pages except for one other person. IDK how he talked about himself using spanish 1 vocabulary though.
It was really freakin hard, thus why I used more advanced nouns. -_-

IDK if I can fight it if she changed the percentage of how much each thing adds up.
She would have to change everyones published grade....

You really should go talk to the principal about that. I remember when my history teacher mixed up the grades of my final exam with those of another kid who has the same last name as me. I begged and pleaded for him to look over the finals all over again but sadly he didn't. My average went down from a B+ to a C.

That's... strange.

About how many and what kind of new words did your friend add to your powerpoint? Some advanced words require and really hint you to change to more complicated tenses, which is out of the question for a Spanish 1 class. Though if they were ONLY advanced nouns, adjectives, and verbs I couldn't possibly understand your teacher's motives for failing you... Plagiarizing is one thing. Asking for some help from a fluent Spanish speaking buddy is another...

That said, level 1 Spanish is there to show you all the basics. It's about teaching you how to pronounce letters and words, learn basic sentence structure, conjugate those words correctly, and perhaps show you a bit of past tense. Naturally, you'll expand your vocabulary a bit while you're at it.

What's strange is that in my Spanish 1 class back in middle school my teacher would ENCOURAGE us to look up words in a Spanish dictionary to use in every day use. You see, Spanish 1 shouldn't be confined to the words you see in your textbook. Spanish level 1 is a LEVEL. It's knowing how to do all of what I listed earlier so you can actually put it to USE:

Learning basic sentence structure so you can read short sentences, perhaps what you'd see on some signs along the beaches of Ibiza...
Knowing some greetings and simple questions so you can get directions from a resident of an area you're visiting...

Your teacher really is hurting you guys by confining your vocabulary to a book. It's really sad he/she doesn't seem to understand this.

Meh, I'm rambling now.

Anyways, if you haven't already, I'd try talking to the teacher about it before getting anyone else involved. Then if that goes no where you tell your parents EVERYTHING, and then ask them to discuss it with the teacher. Just be sure to let them know how you're feeling about all of it. Don't hold back any info.

If it all crashes into the floor from there, that's when your parents will decide if they should take it to the principal or not. Most of these sort of conflicts are resolved by then because teachers definitely don't want the principal involved if they can help it.

I've found that they tend to be more lenient if it's clear you're not after them so much as you are your grade. *shrugs*

Well, that's my take on your situation.

Buena suerte. :p

Skyler's right, the teacher's not going to budge unless you get her job on the line, i.e. get her boss involved. I think if you can get your parents to set up a meeting with the principal, you've got a shot at overturning this grade.

Also, LordoftheMorning is correct. My friend had this horrible teacher in his freshman year of high school who got into arguments with this one student (he was basically the epitome of delinquent students) and then she got tired of arguing with him so she gave him a pass to the library.

Punishment fail.

Seriously though, that's completely unfair. It's not even as if she accused you of plagiarizing or cheating (which it isn't anyways if you just had it proofread by a friend), she just said you went above and beyond the call of duty and that's apparently not allowed. Bad logic is bad.

Good luck, keep us posted on if you get this fixed.

The whole having bad grammar thing makes sense, but since when is using words not discussed in class a reason to fail someone? And if she promised that anyone who turns all of their work in will at least get a D, she shouldn't fail you. That's just awful. I hope this gets straightened out.

That's terrible. In my language class we have dictionaries and are ENCOURAGED to look up words we don't know and incorporate them into our vocabulary.

I also don't see how the **** you're supposed to speak Spanish well by the end of a Spanish I class. If it's similar to French at all, you'll only have been able to go over 2-3 verb tenses by that time, and maybe a quarter of the vocabulary necessary to write 12 freaking pages about yourself. I mean (IIRC), language 1 vocab consists of things like the alphabet, colors, numbers, and then things like house, store, street, etc. No way that's enogh.

Actually there is on average 6 tense's on each thing + sentence reconstruction. -_-

Basically you nailed it. We had really basic stuff and was told to write like 40 sentence's about ourselves.

Right now I am trying to get all of the people in my class organized to go complain to her boss. She's gonna be a very unhappy person when 10+ people say the same thing and have multiple things to complain about.

that totally sucks, I hate foreign language teachers in America. I've had literally one *(the only American one) that wasn't ******** in one way or another.

Is she foreign? Sounds like it... methinks her logic goes something like: oh you used words we didn't do, you must have cheated, because you used them, but got the grammar wrong, so F. That simple. Fighting it, though, yeah... good luck with that. You can't deny you had help, and that help ... skewed the work. Had they ONLY proofread, instead of "spicing it up" as you say, you might have gotten away ok, but w/the additions they made, it really isn't your work anymore, it's yours+theirs, and that's what she's failing you for it sounds like.

Also terrible teacher all around. But I'm biased I flunked out of French 2... twice, once in HS and once in College. I gave up on earning a B.A. for that one thing, even though I had credits enough to get one, I settled for a B.S. cause I just couldn't handle the foreign language requirement.

She is an American.

Yes, but she mainly got mad at my noun usage.
I used nouns that were not in the text book to describe myself.

I am good at language. It really makes me mad that she gave me an instant flunk.
The worst part is my dad. He says that I didn't follow her instructions, so I gave her an excuse to flunk me. He is like wanting to remove all electronic devices from my room now. He says that they consume to much of my time and that if they are removed I will instantly get all of this time. -_- So that this next time I will be able to pass, even with odds against me....

BTW, I called the college today and the woman said that they have been getting a lot of complaints about this teacher and that it has been going on for more than one semester. I know someone that took her 2 semesters ago. She said that the teacher is F'd up as well.
So I am trying to get as many people from multiple semesters to stand up against her. The teacher is gonna **** in her pants! xD lol

I could understand if she didn't want any bad words, but if he was using words that are synonyms or something like that you'd think the teacher would be proud that you took the time to find another word instead of using the same over and over again.

Get as many people as possible to complain about her. It should be fairly easy to get rid of her or change something unless there's that 10 year rule I think that most colleges have? (IIRC) I'm not sure.

Good luck.

Maybe your project was actually so good that she failed you on purpose. Perhaps she fears you'll become a Spanish teacher and take her job or something.

excellent! Yeah, she's gonna freak, lol or not, but who cares, as long as she gives you a proper grade.

C, B, B, C, B, A- (midterm)

25% for work
25% midterm
50% final

That's fair, and she should be required to change her grading schematic to something like that, cause 70% is just ******** and basically says "you don't really even need to come to class, just ace the final and you pass" which her dean won't like to hear. We'll guess she puts your final up to D instead of F, just to be on the safe side (though she could elect higher if she paid attention.)

so... 70+80+80+70=300/4=75 (25%)+ 90(25%)+ 60 (50%) = 18.75+22.5+30=71.25

You get a C!

And that's if she barely passes you on the final, and re-weights her assignments/midterm/final (which she should if she at all cares about teaching for a living.)

These could be played around with a bit if she thinks the midterm is not as important as the assignments, like 15%, 35%, 50% or something... then it'd be... 18.75+13.5+30=62.25

D-, you still pass, barely.

Finals should never count more than 50%. And midterms never less than 20% IMHO.
