what things do you agree with? and what things do you disagree with?
I'll go through it series by series, to be thorough and seeing as it's already divided that way.
Mario: even though it's Nintendo's flagship series, three newcomers at once seems a bit excessive. Keep some form of Toad, for sure (I prefer Captain Toad, but I can see the benefits of regular Toad as well), since he seems to be one of the few all-stars that's missing.
Expanded Mario Universe: no problems here. Waluigi seems like a good choice for a second Wario character; I know he hasn't appeared in Wario Land or Wario Ware, but he was listed under the Wario series when his assist trophy was first shown off, so there's reason to include him.
Donkey Kong: pretty straightforward - if DK is going to get any new characters (something that's long overdue), those two are easily the best choices.
Zelda: seems like a good list. Impa makes a lot of sense, and while Linkle seems like an odd choice, people have been asking for a female Link for a while, and even though I haven't seen Hyrule Warriors footage yet, she seems quite different from Link, which helps.
Metroid: no problems here either. I'd be concerned of the reactions that Dark Samus would get, especially after Dark Pit, but while I haven't finished Metroid Prime 3 (I got lost in the sky city and had to restart), Dark Samus seems like she'd be radically different compared to Samus based on Prime 2 alone. I feel like the Ridley controversy is overblown, and I'd have absolutely no problem if he was added, even if they had to scale him down.
Kirby: seems like a good list - Bandanna Dee seems to have become pretty prominent lately, so adding him makes sense.
Star Fox: I'm still not sure why Wolf was cut in the first place, so bringing him back seems like an obvious decision.
Pokemon: seems a bit premature to include a gen. 7 or 8 grass starter in the list, when you don't even know if, or how well, they'd work for Smash. Also, why bring back Pichu?
Earthbound: no changes, which is understandable
F-Zero: quick question - would Black Shadow inherit Ganondorf's old moveset while Ganondorf gets a new one, or would he have his own moves?
Fire Emblem: I like that you kept one of the Marth clones; it's nice to have options. For Smash 4, six Fire Emblem characters seemed excessive, but as long as other franchises also get attention, I'd have less of a problem with it for a future game.
Kid Icarus: I get why Dark Pit was cut, and Pit and Palutena are the core cast, so it makes sense to keep them both. I feel like a character from Uprising could be added, though - there was a lot of Kid Icarus content in Smash 4 (probably too much, seeing as it only has three games, and people only remember two of them), but without Smash Run next time around, that takes out a lot of it, and other series will have time to catch up. I haven't finished Uprising yet, so I'm not sure who to suggest.
Miscellaneous: good amount of new series added, and no cuts from what I can see. Not sure if we need both Inkling and Octoling, though Splatoon is really popular (especially in Japan), so I suppose it could be justified. What would Mach Rider and Chorus Men be able to do?
Third Party: I feel like Bayonetta would be preferable over Tails; then again, seeing as I voted for her, I might be biased. I just figure that it's better to show off a wider variety of series, and raise interest among Nintendo fans, as opposed to adding more characters to a third party series that's already in the game. I'd also prefer Snake over Bomberman, but then that would leave the roster with only one third party newcomer (which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but given the overwhelmingly positive reaction that third party characters got in this game, it might make things less exciting). Then again, there's no reason why you couldn't have both - Bayonetta and Ryu are proof of that.
That's good to know for Xenoblade. Was Daisy unnecessary? I don't know. I'm not an expert, but hasn't she been appearing in Mario spinoffs? I don't follow the Mario series anymore, but I've seen her heavily requested. At least on gamefaqs so...
I've actually forgotten about Duck Hunt and Sonic, but you were probably right about Greninja and Cloud. Cloud does technically makes more sense than Terra since he's the poster boy for FF. I just wanted Terra to be in. According to the TC, we're only allowed to have 5 guest characters.
Thing is, I wasn't sure if the guest characters already in SSB4 were suppose to count as one of those 5 characters of our selection, but I went with that assumption.
I probably shouldn't have cut Greninja. I guess it makes sense because he's technically suppose to represent the new Pokemon game, so... Again, I'm not a Pokemon expert, but yeah I guess that's my con here.
For Corrin, I imagine him/her returning as DLC, but since FE is becoming more successful, it does make sense to make a FE rep for the next Smash. I just prefer Azura over Corrin because I wanted to at least have some weapon diversity in FE's rep.
Not saying Corrin's a generic swordsman with that dragon genetics and chainsaw sword, and he'd objectively make more sense than Azura, but eh. I at least kept Robin in because Awakening saved the Fire Emblem series.
Thanks for the criticism by the way. Not like I'm gonna have to experiment on my own roster 24/7, but time for some editing I suppose.
There's support for Daisy on GameFAQs, sure, but 99% of it comes from the same person, an obsessive Daisy fan who's been banned from places like Reddit for that sort of thing. She appears in Mario spin-offs, but there isn't much to take from there that couldn't also be used for other characters.
As for third parties, the opening post is outdated (it was made before Ryu, Cloud, and Bayonetta were added); I don't believe people in this thread strictly limit third party additions, as long as you don't go overboard. (personally, I've got a total of nine in my dream roster)
If you want to add Terra, go right ahead; I feel like they planned for the possibility of more Final Fantasy characters in later games, seeing as they made Cloud's icon a generic FF as opposed to something specific to Final Fantasy 7, like the meteor or something. Personally, I'd like Terra to be in too; I'd love to see Final Fantasy's magic system get shown off, and her Esper mode seems like a perfect fit for a Final Smash.
Fair point on Corrin; it would be nice to get something other than sword-users for the Fire Emblem roster. (even Robin and Corrin fall into that category, despite being different compared to the others) Personally, I wasn't a huge fan of his inclusion to begin with, though I felt like it would have been more acceptable if we didn't already have five other FE characters in the game.
Still, thanks for the response, and explaining your choices. There's a program called Smash Bros. Roster Maker that allows you to create rosters easily (you can upload the picture to websites like Imgur in order to post them here), which might make it quicker/easier to make and post changes to your roster:
