Post 1795! In 1795, the Directory formally finished their new French Constitution and put it into effect. They insisted that all that had written the old Constitution be given a majority in the legislature of the new government, and were called the Perpetuals. The Directory consisted of an executive committee of five members who all served terms of one year. There was a bicameral legislature based on that in America. The government was essentially bourgeois conservative in standing. A Royalist uprising in the southwest, called the Vandemaire Uprising, brings attention to the Directory. The same year, Francois Babeuf, founder of the Society of Equals and a primitive communist, attempted a coup d'etat to overthrow the Directory, but is discovered and executed. Similar coups and consipracies will ensue for the next four years until the fall of the Directory in 1799 (but that's for another post!) Napoleon reaches the rack of General in the French army, and moves to a campaign in Egypt. He is only 26. The French continue to expand, engulfing the Austrian Netherlands (Belgium) and Amsterdam and Savoy.

Meanwhile, here in da US, the first states outside of the original 13 are established, as Vermont and Kentucky file for statehood and both are accepted.
