I think this might be interesting to look at (Melee 1999 Poll)

Lol James Bond would be useless in brawl i say.

some of the high scoring characters that didnt get into melee directly, were used in other ways. eg peaches B move is toad....
That's true, plus Dedede and Wario appeared as trophies as well.

But what if James Bond somehow DID make it into Brawl?!

Diddy Kong was owned by Rare back then. Or at least, believed to be owned by Rare. It wasn't until Rare split off from Nintendo and the two got into a fight over the rights to all of Rare's creations (including Diddy Kong and almost Donkey Kong if my memory serves me correctly) that Nintendo got Diddy Kong for sure.

Geno being beaten by a Goomba. OUCH.

I wish we saw actual poll results for Brawl instead of that silly statistically irrelevant list of amount of character "mentions" from 300 e-mails (out of what must have been thousands) that Sakurai received.

goomba would have a hard time fighting, i would think. despite his muscular legs.
Nah he'd be a easy moveset to make, lol jk. Who the hell would want to play as goomba, lol=? That is one of the stupidest ideas, and looking at that there are a lot of stupid people.

This disproves anyone who says something stupid, like DK series isn't big, that is why it only got one rep when DK was bottom tier for SSB 64 on this Melee poll. I find this poll to solve a lot of questions about why certain characters were picked for SSBM.

I also thought of something intresting: the reason Pokemon were so big in SSBM is, well SSBM was released in Pokemon's prime really. Now for SSBB Pokemon is basically at it's prime again, so we'll probably see 5 or 6 Pokemon in SSBB. I think that adds why Pichu got in, though I don't know who wanted Pichu, lol. Anyways, who's idea was it to add Pichu=?

interesting indeed in my opion that boost a few charecters chances. I din't know that James Bond was popular in Japan, I saw casinio royal, I gave em a chance..he is not James Bond.

I never played wrecking crew

Shaun Connery Forever
Connery for life=best Bonds ever. The new Bond is...well he is...difrent from the others, but Connery owns them all! No Bond should make it into SSBB other than Connery, as unlikely as it is. :)

I really want Little Mac in. Or that Black Guy with the bike in the first Punch-Out!!!.
Another YTMNDer? YAY!

Anyway, that poll confuses me. But at least it confirms popularity = recent games.

Then, at the end of the poll, Sakurai makes some comments, saying that that top requested characters like Mewtwo, Peach, Wario, Koopa and Dedede were planned for SSB64 but they got problems. That's interesting for sure. It will be funny to know how pissed were the Wario fans after noticing that he didn't appeared in Melee, while Peach did. Lame.
This tells me two things:

1) SSB64 could been ssoooo much more awesome!

2) A lot of these characters we are expecting to get into Brawl likely will not (unless Sakurai is just pulling out all the stops). There were several characters who "were supposed to be in the original" but didn't even show up until two games later (i.e., Wario and yet to see Dedede)!!

It makes me kind of sad, too, because SSB64 could have had a lot better set of characters, and Melee, too, for that matter...I mean, they had characters who were supposed to get in the previous game and didn't, and then didn't get into Melee. And then they threw in a lot of clones at the end...it tells me they just flat-out ran out of time.

Maybe it just took them too long to transfer to the new engine...plus pretty much every character got a makeover to the new game. I suppose that part of it is a bit encouraging...it seems they are mostly keeping the movesets the same and the engine appears to be the same, too...so they can focus more on the additions this time. I really hope that Brawl is the "end all" of the Smash series. (not that I want it to be the last one, just that it would have the best of every world and have every aspect of the game be the best of the series...)

Well, SSB64 was a bit of an experiment (if a reasonably safe one). It's success was a good omen for melee, but Nintendo probably still wasn't certain exactly how much money they could put into it.

With melee being ridiculously successful (it STILL sells for $20+), I don't think they're going to spare a lot of expenses on brawl.

I would also say that this is good news in the sense that it shows that game quality is more important to them than character count. I have my whole list of characters I'd love to see added, but I would rather see Nintendo cut them than do a poor job on them.

On a different note, goomba scored higher than Geno for two reasons:
1. Lots of people will vote for a 'joke' option on polls.
2. A heck of a lot more people have played (insert mario game here) than mario RPG. I didn' t even know who Geno was until I read about him on these boards.

Now, the slippy beating Wolf is the one I can't figure out. I actually like slippy, but Wolf is much cooler.

I dunno if its illogical to rebump this, but it does give insight into what Sakurai is using.

Notice "Ash" on the list. Strange that he finally decided to include a pokemon trainer, eh?

XD at goomba over Geno. Interesting to see James bond there, 0_o
that's probably due to the popularity of that Goldeneye game, I think...

Anyway, what I find REALLY surprising is Sukapon's addition onto the list! I hope he's in Brawl!

I like how he's over Meta Knight...
Strange...But after Melee his popularity rose significantly to one of the most wanted in the upcoming (Yet before it was made) Brawl...enough that they included him as one of the first seen newcomers upon Brawl's announcement.

After fans of characters that made it into Melee had their character...they became fans of other..."Lesser" characters for Brawl.

That's why Brawl's poll is vastly different in results
