this thread sucks now
Who are you to teach such a lesson?if they get offended for being wrong, then it's a lesson they really need to learn!
Maybe you should explore that for yourself!i'm not sure
Nor did I claim as such.it's not like correcting people on the internet is my only pursuit!
Ah, but is that really your intention or a pleasant byproduct? It is your intentions I seek to learn about!but typically the result of a discussion is that MULTIPLE people know more than when it started! so it seems like a great way to increase knowledge not only for yourself but for others as well!
And where does that challenge get you?it absolutely is!
Am I?you're really pointing out how YOU PERCEIVE them to be wrong!
Perception is reality. My perception is my reality! You as the speaker must take responsibility for what you allowed me to perceive!maybe your perceptions are out of whack
Don't read it then! I will have to report your post for trolling!this thread sucks now
if anything, noting that thoughts represent opinions in this manner would increase attachment via reinforcement of possession, but that's a different discussion. i can't argue with your experience, but i don't see why this need be true in a general sense. many statements are inherently/obviously subjective. such statements are by definition opinions not facts, so further clarification using phrases like "i think" isn't necessary, though it can be usefulAnd I am questioning what they are taught!
In my experience eschewing such qualifications implicitly teaches that their opinions are the only valid opinions. All that serves to do, again imo, is to attach people to said opinions! Sheridan Z mentioned that people tend to consider their individual opinions on matters as part of their self; this is exactly why if you ask me!
both parties. in most styles of (formal) debate it is understood that w/e you say will be interpreted as an opinion unless it is purely objective.Implied to whom? To the person saying it or to the person they are speaking to?
not sure what you mean hereAgain, to whom?
well my point is that it is already understood, or can be, due to the definitions of opinion and factThe best way to make that understood? To clearly state as such! So thank you for doing so. =)
I accept your apology!i should have been more clear and said subjective statements, not just statements
Is that a fact?if anything, noting that thoughts represent opinions in this manner would increase attachment via reinforcement of possession
Nor am I asking you to!i can't argue with your experience
Does anything need be true?but i don't see why this need be true in a general sense.
Is that a fact?many statements are inherently/obviously subjective.
Says who? Specify!so further clarification using phrases like "i think" isn't necessary, though it can be useful
Who says this is "(formal) debate"?both parties. in most styles of (formal) debate it is understood that w/e you say will be interpreted as an opinion unless it is purely objective.
Then ask me!not sure what you mean here
To whom?well my point is that it is already understood
Is that a fact?edit: also, you were nitpicking pretty severely.
Why don't you ask?i don't see how his statement can be viewed as a statement of fact
i'm not the one teaching them the lesson! it's the cruel harsh world!Who are you to teach such a lesson?
Also you are again avoiding the questions. Why do you avoid my questions? Do you find them difficult to answer? (I'll answer that for you: Yes you do, because actions speak louder than words! The question is why do you find them difficult to answer?)
I do! But just because I experiment with one approach does not mean I should abandon another!Maybe you should explore that for yourself!
Nor did I claim as such.![]()
Actions (and consequently, results) are all that matter! Even the worst of people had the best of intentions!Ah, but is that really your intention or a pleasant byproduct? It is your intentions I seek to learn about!
it doesn't get me anywhere unless the person being challenged has a useful response! the real motivation is that it should get the challengee a new insight into the subject! it's not all about me!And where does that challenge get you?
I'm not here to coddle! If they're not ready or not accepting of my approach, it's their loss!In my experience it results in confrontation, and when humans feel confronted they get defensive! How many productive conversations result out of defensiveness? After all, you are aiming for some kind of productive result, right?
yes!Am I?
But unless you explain the basis of your perception, I cannot understand why they are out of alignment with mine! Of course I perceive my own statements exactly the way I meant, since i formulated the statement based on my perception! If your perception is different, there is no way for me to know unless you tell me!Perception is reality. My perception is my reality! You as the speaker must take responsibility for what you allowed me to perceive!
Is this merely your opinion, or is this a fact? What you perceive as sucking is highly subjective and not absolute. Take responsibility for what you communicate, Luke.this thread sucks now
The underlying question of our back-and-forth was something to the effect of "why are so pedantic?"! Of course I am being pedantic in such a discussion! Sorry to disappoint you though!Kevin, now you're just being pedantic. You disappoint me.
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery! Thank you guys!
Actions speak louder than words.Sorry to disappoint you though!
I know this is a commonly used expression, but its merit is questionable. Imitation is often not meant as flattery, and is certainly not the sincerest form of it.Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery!
AhAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAOnly because you perceive it as sucking!
There's actions on smashboards: You troll, ignore, put people in your ignore list, praise, **** ride, argue, reason, talk, report to mods or just don't go on to this thread.interestingly, on smashboards, there are no actions! only words!
is this merely your opinion, or is this a fact? What you perceive as sucking is highly subjective and not absolute. Take responsibility for what you communicate, luke.
