I have an idea (PA only)

I was looking at the player finder, and PA only really has 4 isolated communities:

-pittsburgh
-central PA
-scranton
-philly

I also noticed that most of us still play MELEE and not BRAWL, although there are many brawl players. We are, in fact, a divided state, not only regionally but in the game of preference.

Here's what I am proposing:

-we unify our state. If you have no one to play with, you won't play. We need a couple things for this.

1. we need to know who wants to actively unify PA. I do, but I'll need (minimal) input from probably a dozen or so people.
2. we need tournaments. I know I'm not the best representation for tournament activity in the state anymore, but even I can observe that the local tournaments aren't doing it.

I want to make a PA wide state crew. That's right, everyone. Then I want to set up tournaments so that we can all play each other rather than being isolated. After that, our crew would go about finding tournament venues and actively using them. It wouldn't be hard for us to have 40-man+ tournaments monthly, we have enough players that want to play. Also, I think our state is starved for a tournament or 6.

As for venues, we need to look for places that are willing to support a grassroots community such as this one. Good places to look are like church basements, american legion posts, or other public venue halls. I would prefer both melee and brawl for these tournaments. Game preference is another isolation barrier that needs to be broken.

So PA, give me some opinions and background. Whether you think it's stupid or a good idea or flawed or whatever, just post. Sitting around isn't working anymore.

im up for uniting PA, and I've been doing whatever I can
I've been holding tourneys whenver I can, and just started up consistant melee and brawl biweeklies in philly
pa isnt that imbalanced towards melee. theres more melee than brawl in this state, but not by that much

state wide "crew" might be tough as were all part of other crews. or you guys could all just join tos lol

Im stuck near Erie and I love both games. Help me mow!
Zig-zag! I'm like 2 hours away from you! When I go to the Canada tournament in November you should come with me! You'll need a passport or your birth certificate/driver's license to get through though. Also we could fight at smash bros.

I also lol'd at Swiftbass's Outlaw Star reference.

Since my return to melee, and I'll still will play brawl but not as interested in as melee, I've always would favor PA events over any others I like PA and will always put it first when it comes to smash so I am totally down for unifying PA.

I think it's a great idea but the state is so big.. where could we all meet? Central PA is at least a 2 hour hike from Philly and we only have one active driver/smasher (Pakman) unless UltimaScout wants to take some people.

Pittsburgh has a hard time getting to Ship too IMO.

sounds awesome.
im from philly and play melee and I'm definitely down.
I play at temple in the game room daily except this week because I'm on crutches :(
Aww, you're on crutches. I GOT HIT BY A VESPA. I'll put you on crutches next time.

On the subject at hand, that would definitely be cool. I could probably get a room or two reserved on campus(Temple) for tournies, but the whole issue is once money becomes involved, the administration starts going crazy.

Hey unifying is a great idea I would love to see PA really take hold of competitive smash. There are 4 of us here in Altoona that play brawl pretty seriously (among some others but they aren't nearly as good as us ha) but still lets make some **** happen in PA

STATE CRU BATTLE TIEM?

Cactus
scar

I wonder how the latter would do against NJ and NY in crews
Why am I not on there? Just because I haven't had time for many tournaments does not mean I'm an inferior player. On the contrary, I have improved a bit lately.

People are trying to get tournaments going here at penn state... that's pretty far from everyone though.

We could host tournaments in the basement of my house in York... with a ton of room to spare...
I am 100% up for this. It is pretty central too. I think the most ideal location would probably be Ship considering where everyone is located, but this isn't too shabby.

Are there two Penn State campuses?

My best friend here in edinboro has a girlfriend that goes to Penn State, but Im not sure that its the main campus, nor am I sure how far away the two are.

Interning at Fisher Price.

But they won't let you into Canada with just your license, so get a passport or something. You have a full month to get your **** together, no johns.

how often do you go home though? Otherwise, that's fantastic.

I am also thinking central PA would be best, not ship but closer to like carlisle or harrigburg, york is great too. anything like lancaster or hanover or w/e is just too far for pittsburgh.

ship isn't bad, but there's just such a lack of....resources.

give me a tally of gamecube/wii/TV/surge cables we have. I mean like, full sets.

I have 1 wii, so I'll go first.

also, any other input ideas for medians of travel? We can do cross-state, but no one really wants to. Half the state isn't too bad though. We should also mind scranton, since TGP is closing and their community is more isolated than the other 3.

scranton, get some representation in here.

I will be @ TGP.

What would your group think of maybe having a dinner outing to discuss this? I don't think anyone else in PA is going.

as for resources, philly by far has the best
scar has like 4 tvs, i have 2, gotm has 1, pakman has 1, which is 8 total off the top of my head without thinking much. and we have pretty much enough cubes and wiis to cover all the tvs. weve also got venues

only prob with that is the location is sorta biased lol

resources being inexpensive public tournament venues. philly has less resources than we do.

There are like 10 penn state campuses all over the state. I meant main campus, which is in the center.

How many of you guys are going to tgp?

sounds like a great idea

I'm in Allentown though, and lack a drivers license and resources to hold anything :urg:

Still, if I could get transportation (I know a couple of people on campus who would probably go) I'd be up for some tournaments.

Max, you know I am up for whatever you suggest.

What about Harrisburg for a tourney location?

Its got lots of buildings we could attempt to use, it has a bus and train station nearby as well as an airport.
We can find plenty of parking in garages and there are a decent amount of people that live close enough to offer some housing.

ex: I live 20 mins, Ship is about 45, etc

I'm willing to bring some hardware in order to play, but I'm not willing to drive long distances to meet. The Pittsburgh area is where I'll be. Also, I strongly prefer Brawl. Melee feels so clunky now.

Leave PA like right now. Like brawl all you want, but Brawl is clunky compared to melee.

Clunky in general refers to things that are slower and more bulky. You cannot make the argument that melee is slower than brawl.

With characters like Ike and Snake who are slow and consider good I would say brawl favors bulk moreso than melee as well.

i love hosting tournaments, but between work/travel, class, and being engaged, i really haven't had time for much. i'll play something if it's local around york, perhaps harrisburg. i'm sure vagabond will join me. i know of quite a few locations to host them in both areas, but i'd prefer york since i live here.

all together, my friends and i can probably get 8 setups (gc/wii/brawl/melee/tvs).
someone start something and i'll help out if i can, i'll play either game.

Well, unifying the state would be rather tricky, seeing as how big the state is.
I hadn't planned on advertising this yet, but we have been hosting Brawl weeklies here in Grove City (north of Pittsburgh) on Wednesdays if anyone's interested. PM me for more info.

I'm all for this and will help out in anyway i can. I wont be able to be active in travel till after thanksgiving due to ****ty class schedule, but after that i would be very for active travel to tournaments, and hosting them if i can find the right resources.

Its going to be tricky and everyone with a drivers license or ability to get a drivers license will have to be pretty active to get this and keep it rolling.
