I Got My Video Games Taken Away

Just last week my parents decided to take away my video games. They didn't tell me if I can get them back. This included my wii, gamecube, DS, GBA, and my retro Game-Boy Original. They claim it's "distracting me from my school work". OK ya, maybe I play a little to much, but i don't think this is going to motivate me to get better grades (That's what they are hoping it will do) I used to play smash bros. for about 2 hours a day and Counter Strike on my comp. for about half an hour. I was getting 3 A's 2 B's and a C. I don't think that's that bad....well for me it kinda is. But i really want my smash bros. back! How can i convince them to give me just my Wii back? I'm not sure if I can pull my grades up that much, but I think I can get rid of the C. I thought maybe some fellow smashers could help a poor chap out, got any advice?

What I would do is finish your homework first. Then say, "Well, I'm done with all my school work, so I'm bored. Is it alright to play some video games?"

I can't see how a reasonable parent could deny your request.

You have to be honest, though. You have to actually have your homework done, or at least do it the next morning before school.

If you show your parents that you can be focused on school work even if you play video games, they will let you have them back.

Well, at least that will work if you're parents aren't the insane kind. Good luck.

You could always use reverse psychology and start using drugs to distract you from school work instead.

Lol, I'm not the kind to start teh drugs. Ya they are a bit insane. I used to be addicted to world of warcraft, and they deleted my character. Well maybe that was a good thing. I hate WoW now. But those are the kind of extremes they go to to get me focused on work.

I played WoW for a month before I got tired of it. How long did you play before you stopped (if you say two days, then both you and your parents are insane).

Just do your homework first. Then game it up. Simple.

Unless you're me, and you skip step 1 in favour of ANYTHING else. :)

I know exactly how you feel, Blackadder. Right now I think I have a 20 page paper due on Monday. I'm pretty sure I haven't picked a topic yet. Instead I'm surfing around on the Internet.

Well, this shouldn't be problem. As long as you can show that video games aren't interfering with your school work, they have no reason to take them away. If they still won't listen, then I guess you'll just have to get good grades and slowly regain your privileges.

I know that hearing this will annoy you, but your parents really do have your interests at heart. If video games are messing up school, then you need to back off. I guess I agree with your parents here, even though I have often been on the receiving end of this ideology, as you are currently.

But it might be helpful to try to convince your parents that school is not all-important. My parents would always be mad that I wasn't getting straight A's, because they knew that I could (I actually couldn't, due to ADD and other stuff). It wasn't until this year that they wanted me to "just pass". That is a very healthy mindset for me, because of how much I absolutely abhor school.

Strive for excellence, my friend, although that is pretty hypocritical of me to say.

"Healthy "student lifestyle.

Study 15-20 min a day. Do your sometime before it is due. (I do it the morning that school starts :) ). Play games, computer, and TV collectively up to 3 hours a day.(I mean less than 3 hours a day). And hang with freinds regulary.

This may depend on your age. However, you do not seem that old.

Get over it.

They are your parents. They know what's best for you. No idea how old you even are, but I am guessing young. So deal with it until you can move out.

Just do your homework quickly first, then that'll leave the rest of the night for whatever you want to do. :)

You'll end up resenting you parents otherwise, and will rebel a bit around about the age of 14/15.

Start dating your teacher.
Convince your parents that your new love is distracting you.
Get your teacher taken away from you.
And profit.

But yeah, games aren't that great. Go do homework.

Yeah actually you could start dating your teacher. That way, she'll get arrested and you wont get any more homework from her again, then you could play all the computer games you could ever want.

Or you could just do your homework quickly. :)

I just finished school and so I can do pretty much whatever. Seriously though depending on what year you're in and how much work you have to do it shouldn't be too hard to balance gaming and school work (as well as socialising of course ;))

If they took your games away from you in order to stimulate your grades it is clear that they see your determination and potential is great and they believe you can do better either that or your parents are killjoys.

Well I guess I am pretty young, only 16. But video games used to be like...my 2nd favorite hobby (behind tennis). And i just don't like the fact that they can take away something that is so important to me. Thanks for all the advice though everyone. I'm sure things will turn around eventually. i'm sure I can bring up my Math grade (best subject), from a B to an A. Infact I bet if I do that, they might let me play a little bit over Christmas break. I'll tell them to think of it as a present from them to me.

Go to a friends house for a study group bring books and junk. And play smash. You could actually study a lil just to say you did something. Plus studying with friends isnt bad just finish your stuff and play. 1+1 son.

If he's like me, most of his video games were bought by his parents. His parents pay for his food, clothing, shelter, transportation, and entertainment. They have every right to take his games away, not only because they are his parents, but they are his providers as well. His parents owe him nothing. He owes them everything.

Ingrate...

Just listen to what your parents say. I wanted to buy a 360 on Black Friday, using money they gave me, no less, but I was forbidden to do so. I was told I had to wait until I graduated to keep my grades (relatively) good. They were completely right in their decision.

LOLOL, Quite funny. No, I'm not asian. I never knew that asian parents=no video games
I have many asian friends that are addicted to Counter Strike or WoW though. I mainly blame the fact that I'm an only child, they worry way to much about me, and think video games are the root of all evil. All they care about is school. Today my dad said "you can rot in your room for all I care, as long as you bring up your grades." Ya I want my smash bros. back...

Taking away a mans born right to play video games is a sin.

That once happened to me and I eventually tripled my grade level, so it actually works. Try going to a friends house and play over there instead.

Instead of dealing out warnings to everyone who deserves it, any infractions after this post will be warned accordingly.

Don't one-line post and don't put "QFT". It's spam.

Wow, that's garbage. I had a similar situation, although it involved driving and a job, but we're not going to go into that. Anyhoo, just wait. After a while, your parents will cool down ( I honestly don't see what the problem is, unless they freak out over zeroes, like my mom does). They'll give 'em back.

Just be glad that they didn't take away your internet too.

How old are you? I'm guessing under 18, or else this wouldn't be an issue. Just wait a couple years, and you'll get to have a job, move out, and pay your own bills.

I'm also curious as to how your school life is to you, and how strict your parents are about other things. Do you struggle in school in a way that's unsolvable by simply studying? That could be indicative of a learning disorder, or a teacher who is an idiot (or both). Do your parents yell at you if you bring home anything less than an A? Considering that you said you have no D's or F's, this could just be a personality trait of your parents.

Try using mindgames.

They took away your games to make you do better in school right? Let your grades drop until they return the games, then do well in school again.

I wouldn't actually try it, but it would be fun to see what your parents try to do when your grades drop and they have nothing to take away.

Wow, that's some deep stuff there Rapid Assassin. Eh I don't think I have a learning disorder, but i used to get straight A all the way through 6th and 7th grade, then they dropped to about half A's and half B+'s in 8th and 9th, and then now this in 10th, so i guess it's a shock for them because they are always like "why can't you be like the student you were in 6th grade." I think that maybe a contributing factor is that I'm an only child. Guess it's really important to them that I don't screw up my life playing video games (even though I was nowhere near anything like that) they like to use the word "addiction" to describe me just having a casual gaming hobby.
