No, this is not "tiers r 4 queerz"; you'd have to be ******** not to see that Ganondorf is considerably worse than Meta Knight. What I don't understand is why it's such a big deal that anyone would care. So one character is better than another and it's in a big fancy list. So what? It has no gameplay implications beyond low tier, and it doesn't really help new players choose a character either because many top tiers are harder to play. So who DOES the tier list actually mean anything to? People who play a lot of low tier events? Even so, it's not enough to fuel thousands of pages of discussion... What's the big attraction? Why does the BBR even bother to put them together beyond the low tier divide when they could be working on more impotant things (like, you know, convincing people to use their ruleset)?

Because the best way to increase the amount of fun you're having is to quantify it. Think about it: we compare stats in pretty much every other sport because it's inexplicably fun, and tier lists are basically the same thing.

Lots of people want to know things like this.

That's why they are made.

To satisfy the communities lust for information.

Because it's nice to know that your character is terrible once you've already invested time into learning them, and you'll play them anyway. That's like saying why do match-ups exist. You're still assigning a favourable or unfavourable matchup a number, regardless of its necessity.

Who cares?

With a game like Brawl with both a large amount of characters and a huge gap between top and low tier, tier lists are generally "loose" and allow for characters to move around a lot, depending on thr metagame. If the game was a bit more balanced, tier lists would be boring to argue about, but this game has enough of a gap between top and low to allow for fun discussions on who goes where.

Of course, most people refuse to intelligently argue about this, so it's a lot less fun.

Well, how about this-with matchups, you can at least get an idea of whether or not you should pick up a secondary, and if so, who. With tier lists... Well, let's just say that picking up wolf as a secondary for Fox is just a little on the stupid side, eh?

Tier lists basically are also there to help people that are coming into the game as well.

Excuse some people for not knowing absolutely everything about the game when they first start or first look at the game, it's only normal.

Besides, even Mario Kart Wii of all things has a tier list (of which has pre-set stat bonuses that pretty much solidify a perfect, virtually unchanging list). Imagine how unattractive and uncompetitive this community would look without a tier list if a game as casual as MK Wii has one.

Something to do, I actually enjoy the discussion because someone will always complain about their own character and say "Oh that MU isn't so bad" or "Top player X lost to top player Y, That must mean Top player Y's character wins the MU!" Or my favorite "Hey guys I took a game off m2k, this MU is 50/50 vs MK now"

NOPE

NONONONONONONONONONONONNONONONONONNONO.

Ankoku's list is the same thing as what you're saying. Tier lists are conjecture as to the utmost potential of characters and are 100% worthless, and have absolutely no place in the forums they are currently stickied in.

this isn't really true. tier lists are supposed to be a measure of the viability of characters in high level tournament play (it's amazing how many people don't understand this). the "utmost" potential of characters would be TAS or something.
