***** i said a lot, and i'm referring to my fellow socalians

caaaaaaalm down

and yes i know i helped kill it if that's what you're implying, which is why i made the resolution to stop saying it in 09 (which has been for the most part successful)
i was more implying that i helped kill it without copying you

i overused it for a while, at least

I heard the streetfighter community is full of Sheridan & Scamps.
Yeah, except if the SRK EVO debate was any indication, apparently they use their intellect and experience to become stubborn self-righteous jackasses at a far greater rate.

Let's talk about science again, that was fun. You know, I've always felt that in school, even through high school, "science" was always presented as like, a collection of facts and interesting phenomena of the natural world. But really strictly speaking, "science" is specifically a method for acquiring those facts and building/testing models for those phenomena. Education in the actual scientific method I think is horribly inadequate or even nonexistent, when it's far more important than understanding specific phenomena; I often think the story of HOW we know something is much more interesting than the thing itself.

this is so true. I can remember countless times as a child learning something awesome about "science" and wondering how the hell did they find that out?

what might be scary and true is that our government and society might not want to teach so much about science unless they have to. As to not hinder the validity of religion.

When you learn physics, chemistry, and biology for real, you start to understand how life works and all. With some basic knowledge on science anybody could see the Galapagos islands and how the animals differ and adapt, and basically imply evolution.

lmao

labs are not introduced until high school, and those are once a week. which is not much for what is the essence of science.
Uh....., I guess? In class experiments are done all the time in elementary school (kinda, they have science fairs where you build things and stuff) Real labs should be introduced in high school for most cases. Although some students may be ready for a lab environment earlier, waiting until high school ensures that everybody is prepared to understand and apply the scientific method. (This is the day and age of no child left behind, remember? To cater to the stupid kids, the smarter kids have to suffer)

In science the great leaps are made from people coming up with seemingly obvious ideas that nobodys thought of before. The way science is taught in schools is by going over new concepts that somebody came up with, discussing why they came up with it, and proving these concepts experimentally. For my college physics I take one lab a week. Thats one major discovery im trying to fully understand every week (for example, were studying electron diffraction, which is the pattern electrons make with their wavelengths when they strike really small separations, such as the separations of atoms. With this concept electron microscopes are made, since electrons have smaller wavelengths than visible light, so more detail can go into the image).
This is just one concept in the tapestry of related physics material I need to know. Introducing more labs would be introducing too much material over a small amount of time. We are trying to cover hundreds of years worth of discoveries in about two years for the general education for physics.
That being said, I might be able to take another lab at the same time for something like, lets say, biology, but my schedule would become exceedingly more difficult.

Your biting off more than you can chew here. Although nothing is perfect, including the education system, its set up this way for a reason.

its difficult because people have so little experience here. In pakistan and india, scientific method is taught in the third grade, and every science class IS a lab starting in 5th grade. how hard it is depends on exactly what your teaching. the basics are taught to make sense in a realistic way. The universe is taught to be something calculable from the very beginning. Science and math here is very slow paced from the beginning making it hard in the end. History is sometimes just ****ed up here. Its easier to control stupid people. my cousins in pak did calculus in junior year of high school.

what youre talking about is true too, but youre talking about more advanced labs.

edit: chemistry is too advanced for elementary school so there would be no acid giving. but i could have learned how to tell the difference between sedimentary and igneous rocks or how to use a microscope to find and draw a plant cell way before 7th grade. but that isnt taught till high school lol. pretty sad to me, being a science fan.

bunsen burners dont have to be the reason kids cant do science. teachers can handle that or demonstrate.

although in pak kids know how to use bunsen burners and all that in 5th grade.

I dont understand the point of this. I did calc my senior year, and knew nothing about algebra until my freshman year. Smarter kids than I took calc BC junior year and calc AB senior year.

You had some ****ty schooling. I learned all of that in elementary school.

well in brooklyn, that stuff isnt taught till high school. there are no labs in elementary or junior high public schools at all.

the point is school here is at a very slow pace, calculus in junior year is the norm there, not for the smart kids. the smart kids there do differential geometry, topology, or group theory.

yes it is good for pakistan. americans are *******.
