labs are not introduced until high school, and those are once a week. which is not much for what is the essence of science.
Uh....., I guess? In class experiments are done all the time in elementary school (kinda, they have science fairs where you build things and stuff) Real labs should be introduced in high school for most cases. Although some students may be ready for a lab environment earlier, waiting until high school ensures that everybody is prepared to understand and apply the scientific method. (This is the day and age of no child left behind, remember? To cater to the stupid kids, the smarter kids have to suffer)
In science the great leaps are made from people coming up with seemingly obvious ideas that nobodys thought of before. The way science is taught in schools is by going over new concepts that somebody came up with, discussing why they came up with it, and proving these concepts experimentally. For my college physics I take one lab a week. Thats one major discovery im trying to fully understand every week (for example, were studying electron diffraction, which is the pattern electrons make with their wavelengths when they strike really small separations, such as the separations of atoms. With this concept electron microscopes are made, since electrons have smaller wavelengths than visible light, so more detail can go into the image).
This is just one concept in the tapestry of related physics material I need to know. Introducing more labs would be introducing too much material over a small amount of time. We are trying to cover hundreds of years worth of discoveries in about two years for the general education for physics.
That being said, I might be able to take another lab at the same time for something like, lets say, biology, but my schedule would become exceedingly more difficult.
Your biting off more than you can chew here. Although nothing is perfect, including the education system, its set up this way for a reason.
