Fox128
Smash Journeyman
iVS – I love Vienna ´n´ Smash
July 2008
Attention: This tournament is not 100% confirmed yet! I post it anyways to see, how many people would be interested, to make planning easier (I also posted all the details, because I was bored…). The date we’re aiming for is the beginning of July, but that can still be discussed.
So… Fox128 brings you a new tournament (series?): iVS
It’s about time that Smash comes to Vienna. If this is actually happening, this will be the first REAL Austrian tournament ever. And for making up for all those years without a single “real” tournament, we’re sure trying to make this one as huuuuge as possible: Including a huge prizepool and hopefully a huge list of attendents, including the Stars of European Smash. We would be VERY happy, to see people from outside of Europe too!
Although Brawl is out, the main events of this will be the Melee tournaments. However, if possible, we’re looking forward to have a Brawl tournament aswell.
Entry fees:
To guarantee a huge prizepool, this will range from €20 to €40 total. This will most likely be a 3-day event, depending on how many people show up and how much all the support will cost.
How to pay: You will most likely just have to pay cash, when you arrive at the venue. Otherwise, you won’t be let in.
The venue:
The venue we’re currently trying to get is locateted IN Vienna, only 20 minutes away from the center. It has several rooms, including a “party cellar”. The whole venue THEORETICALLY has enough room for over 1000 people! So, we’re looking forward to make sleeping possible there.
There also is a drinking bar and a disco, but at this point, I can’t tell if you will be able to use them. However, if you’re into partying/clubbing there is more than enough possibilities (even within a 500m radius from the venue). There also are about 3 “tabletop soccer” tables, that can be used for FREE (ya, you heard me right!).
Address:
Lerchenfelder Gürtel 49
1160 Wien
Food:
Since there are several stores and restaurants nearby, right now, we are not planning to provide you with food. This would have a positive effect on the entry fee for you.
Travel Informations:
By plane:
If you come by plane, you will arrive at VIE “Flughafen Wien”.
There are two possibilities, but I’ll only explain one of them:
Take the airport bus (€6) to Westbahnhof (35 minutes) (it’s the second and last stop!). From here, see the “by train” explanation. This is by far the easiest and fastest way, but also the most expensive one. It’s 45 minutes in total and costs €7.70 in total.
If you’re interested in more complicated, but probably cheaper possibilities, see:
http://efa.vor.at/wvb/index_en.htm
(for departure, fill in: stop: “Flughafen Wien (VIE) Bahnhof”
for arrival, fill in: address: “Lärchenfelder Gürtel 49”)
By train:
If you come by train, you will most likely arrive at “Westbahnhof”.
Follow the “U” signs (“U-Bahn” is the metro system) and take the U6 (in direction “Floridsdorf”) to “Thaliastraße”.
From there, it’s only a 5 minute walk to Lerchenfelder Gürtel 49, which in detail is explained here:
That’s 10 minutes in total and it costs €1.70 to buy a ticket.
Otherwise: if you arrive at another train station in Vienna, contact me, and I'll try to help you.
Vienna:
Do I have to expain? Vienna is the capital of Austria and has PLENTY of possibilities, for WHATEVER you might desire. There is plenty of clubs, sightseeing stuff and in summer there are really nice open-air locations at the Danube (“Donau”). Vienna also has a Casino monopol and the Concord Card Casino, where big Poker events are held (if you're interested in that).
We also have a big amusement park, the "Prater", that you can go in for FREE (yep..) (of course the attractions you attend still cost money). I might just go there with you after the tournament if enough ppl who’re staying, are interested. :D
Misc. stuff/costs:
- A one-way ticket for “Wiener Linien” costs 1.70. You can go as far as you want with it and you can use/mix anything (U-Bahn, bus, tram,... and “city trains”)! Just don’t switch direction and don’t leave Vienna >>XD (however, there are hardly any conrols anyway, lol)..
- How to use the tickets: We have a stamping system. Stamp your ticket with one of the blue automats standing OUTSIDE when attending an U-Bahn, or INSIDE of trams and busses. Just stamp it ONCE, when attending your FIRST public service vehicle. If you switch afterwards, you don’t have to do anything, just carry your ticket with you.
- Nightlines: normal public service vehicles will stop their service at around 00:30. But even after that there are nightline busses (abr. “N”), that will get you almost anywhere you want, and the ticket system is the same for them too (same price too). However, it gets a little more expensive if you buy a ticket directly inside the bus.
- Water: Austria’s drinking water probably has the best quality in the world (actually it’s even better than the water you buy in stores), because we get water from the glaciers. So, if you’re into water, don’t buy it, just drink it!
- alcohol in Austria is really cheap too >_O
Sponsors and support:
This tournament will hopefully be powered by seeN, a Lan-party organization sponsored by Logitech. (see www.seen.us) They hopefully will support us with the venue and TVs (and maybe more) and thanks to them, prices will drop.
At this point we can’t tell how closely we will be working together at the tournament itself, but things are being discussed.
Time schedule and events:
There is no time schedule yet, but we’ll try to do all the following within 3 days:
- SSBM singles (pools+DE bracket)
- SSBM doubles (DE bracket)
- SSBM low tier (SE bracket)
- SSBB singles (DE bracket)
- SSBM reginals (for fun)
Planned Prize Distribution:
SSBM singles €10:
1. 50%
2. 25%
3. 15%
4. 4%
5. 2% (*2)
7. 1% (*2) (at least €10)
SSBM doubles €10: same as singles, but PER TEAM
SSBM lowtier €1: Winner takes it all
SSBB: not decided on yet.
Venue Rules
- No destroying stuff. If stuff gets destroyed, you have to pay it, otherwise it will be paid from the prize pool. You don’t want that to happen.
- Smoking will be forbidden in the rooms for sleeping and for playing.
- Label all your stuff, so you don’t lose it.
Tournament Rules
Personally, I really liked the ESA2 setup,...
Pools: (only relating the SSBM singles tournament)
- there will be seeding. (pre-tournament seeds will be publicated a few days before the tournament, the main factor will be the placings in previous big tournaments)
- There will be one or two rounds of pools, depending on how many people show up. We also can’t tell how many players per pool and how many pools there will be yet.
- pools will be best of 3.
- ties broken by lost matches, than by heads-up score.
Singles:
- No items.
- 4 stocks.
- 8 minutes time limit.
- Ties broken by lives, than %, than by sudden death.

- Banned Stages: All other stages.
- No individual stage banning.
- Double blind pick is available
- The stage for the first match of a set will be random between Final Destination, Dreamland 64 and Pokemon Stadium, or agreed upon both players (the stage must still be one of the six neutrals)
- After the first match, loser picks a stage, then winner might switch character, then loser might switch character (in THIS order).
- DSR: A player cannot choose the last stage he won on.
- Stalling is forbidden (you can still use Peach Bomber and Rising Pound to RECOVER, but not for stalling purposes of course)
- Wobbling is completely forbidden.
- BRING YOUR OWN CONTROLLER!

Same as singles except:
- Sets will be best of three, quarter finals best of 5, finals best of 7.
