Hypothetical 2012 tourney

so I went to my first gaming tournament on sunday and i really enjoyed myself, and it got me thinking how cool it would be to have a big big one in canberra.
the obvious problem with this is it is canberra, it is tiny, we dont have many smash players, so lots of people would have to come to us, and maybe pay for accommodation as i doubt we could house that many people.
the drawcard, well my 18th is around the end of this year, and i planned to blow $10K - $15K on it. but to sponsor a few very good north/south american/japanese/european players to act as a drawcard and have an epic smash64/melee tournament would be the best fun i could possibly have with that amount of money, hopefully to occur early 2012.
the only way i would blow 10k to 15k on it though was if it was in canberra, because id want to use the same place to have my 18th after the tourney.

so i would like some input, is this a viable option? my dream tourney players would be
isai, alancitu, jousuke, king funk. and if there was enough money left over maybe some more melee players.
obviously my goal could be crushed by those people i would like not being interested in being paid to come to australia to play smash, but i think its worth asking because i'm that keen for it.
obviously doing this super early so feelers can be sent out if theres is the remotest possibility that this might work.
questions to contemplate:
sponsor players or have a huge pot to make it viable for possibly more internationals?
canberra venues?
amount of $ for sponsorship and amount of $ for setup?

cheers

Sign me up. If it's Ok with the parents I might be able to house a couple of people.

even if you personally dont like brawl, its probs a good idea to run brawl aswell. you'll get more attendance that way. (e.g. i wouldnt go if there's no brawl)

other than that sounds like a pretty cool idea.

Whilst it sounds like a good idea, it's very hard to convince people to go to ACT in the first place, i highly doubt many will go unless you actually do get isai over (pretty sure everyone will go for isai if he garuntees he will enter melee) and a big brawler, mostly because ACT is that lame in the first place lol

You guys may have heard of Luke, the best at everything ever? Well it just so happens that he also lives in ACT, and knows a few things about running awesome tournaments and succeeding at every endeavor he undertakes. He has asked me to inform you that he has graciously volunteered his services to help you organize an amazing tournament, and let you to bathe in his excellence. Here are some details of the magnificence he has crafted using his bare hands and all his dignity:

Dang. o.o

Why am I mentioned with the likes of those other three players? O_O
because europe was left out otherwise :p
and i noticed you were going to genesis or something in america so your less likely to be too tied down for travel.

@ robsta its in december this year but i wanna belate it for this, maybe 1-5 months ish.

@ C-dog luke would be a great help, echeers

as for brawl i dont mind if its played, but i have no idea how to organise for it so may need to consult with luke.

@redact, so you reckon heaps of people will come just for isai? if so thats great, i didnt think the act's negative factor was beaten by isai alone xD

isai is a legend

too bad he reportedly hates melee now, or at least finds it so boring he refuses to play it

i rephrase, free donuts or im not going

Yes, isai has that hype so long as you can convince him to at least gauruntee he will play some melee, he does not need to perform amazingly nor play heaps, its just so me and others can say "i played isai"

red you gimp everybody loves the act smash scene, we're the favorite scene of everyone thats been here.

yeah so, I've run a bunch of tourneys, including a bunch of shayas tourneys while he's been too busy ****ing around.
I can help out any way you need, so just let me know.

First thing you need is a venue, and that needs to be concrete and confirmed before anything happens.
I could organize the venue that I used to use for you if you'd like, but considering the potential number of people you want here, I think it'd be too small.
Also when deciding the venue, you need to think about how many days this will go for, majors usually go for 2 or sometimes even 3 days.

Next you need equipment, most out of state players can bring consoles and games, but tv's have to come from instate.
I think I have 5 crt tv's and if I pooled with the rest of my crew, we could probably get around 10 just by ourselves.

a good number of tv's to people ratio is 1:4, however thats only if one game is being played at a time, and if you wanted to have 2 or even 3 playing at one time, you'd need more tvs and people dedicated to making sure everyone is playing matches and using their time wisely.

If you want things to run smoothly and on-time, then you have to go into this with the mindset that everyone needs you to hold their hand and tell them what to do constantly, you cannot just let the tourney run itself once everything is underway.
Luckily for you I've retired from playing so I would be quite happy to be running things all day and making sure everything stays on track, without entering any events, except maybe doubles.
If your lucky and give enough notice, vyse might come too.
Me and vyse running would be a pretty good team I reckon.

The next thing you'd want to consider is housing for people, as well as finding them cheap places to stay if they cant get housing, you pretty much have to do most of the work for people here or they will just be like 'yeah cbf maybe next time'

Theres lots more to consider, but thats a good starting point.
so yeah, if you want my help, just let me know.

I want ARMADA!!!

Never heard of king funk before lol. (no offense)
Of course you haven't. I'm not even that good lol. =S

Best 64 European players are Craiigg, Mahie, Fays, etc.

If anything for European players, you should try and get Armada for Melee or Glutonny/Mr-R/Leon for Brawl.

game skill is definently a big thing to consider when deciding who to invite/sponser, but how they are as a person is important too.
maybe your just cooler then those dudes funk.

Every 64 player not from North America is a nice person. This is essentially because Battlecow gives the whole world something mutual to hate on and as a result we're all best buds.

I might make some personal recommendations to james as to who comes, it'd be cool to meet Near, Peek, Superboom and more personally.

mmm well not to be super negative or whatever, but when I went to america and met my smash heroes that I though were super cool, so many of them were total ****heads.
of course we ARE talking about brawl here.

Fair enough. My experiences differed. When I met people in real life for the first time I found no matter how they acted behind the keyboard, in real life they were just people like me. Then again, this wasn't Brawl =P

Helping the rest of the world get along? That's what America's all about! Now get the **** off of Israel, Middle East!

Astonishing lack of response from any of the greats.

i'll go if superboom goes. we go back a few years.

also, don't underestimate the power of having a large turnout in the middle of nowhere. most american tourneys are in fact, in the middle of nowhere, but then again most of them drive. being somewhere 'boring' doesn't have to be -- you make your own fun with the most amazing set of people

good to hear some positive responses, and money fpor education lawl.
i better spend some more serious time reading/replying on my weekend

for the meantime

do you think you would get a better overall turnout from internationals and locals if it was a huge pot with maybe 1 or 2 sponsors, or a user pays pot and maybe 4-10 star sponsors.

cheers

I'd go for the sponsors tbh, pot doesn't seem to be a huge incentive for most aus players

if it was a $10,000 pot i'm sure you'd retract your statement red :9

typically the returns from pots aren't worth trying for, that's all

Seeing as not all players can aim for the pot (in fact, like Redact said, most players wont)

Yet all players can meet Isai

I'd go with sponsorships.

Me for example, who would have a chance for big money if the $10,000 pot went down to 5th place for a Brawl tournament.
I would be numerous times more likely to go if UTD Zac (Brawl GaW Player) or Dr.PP came.
I think more people would will enjoy the sponsored champions more than the pot, unless everyone up to like 13th place got some money or something.

split $10 000 to all the entrants? Im sure with that money you could get a range of 7-10 interstaters that would make spending money on the trip worth it for just as many people. idk.

wait why are you spending so much money lol
hope you have fun with it!

Unless the pot was split pretty evenly until past 4th, i dont think id benefit much from a high pot. I don't forsee myself placing above 5th at a national that has 10,000 involved

so basically it seems to be going like,
if we can get isai, its on,
this is due to isai being god-like at melee and 64, and above all he would be top of my personal preferences. And he will probably draw the most amount of players, if we get isai then maybe hold a poll for the popular choice of another to sponsor over?
i have a leave blackout period from jauary to march, so if we get desired international players interest it would probs be in april.
i might try and pm isai this weekend to see if hes interested.
