Okay I think I might be on to something.

I was sad to find out that this might be out of your control, but usually the same thing happens to me with Ike (to an extent).

Apparently shields have some property to push people, how this is accomplished I don't know, but it sort of works that if I perform an attack and I'm close to the edge with Ike that somehow I get pushed off the stage, and I always do my Nair on accident. I was thinking about it last night and it probably helps me recall easier because I ALWAYS KILL MYSELF FROM IKE'S NAIR LAG!! I suppose the same thing happened when when Sonic tried to do an attack at the very edge of the stage and something caused him to get knocked off. I assume if the guy was anything like me and pressing buttons while still doing the Usmash, he must've hit the attack button which caused him to do a Nair instead of just freefalling off the stage.

Hope this helps.

lol I hate it when that happens.

On a silly note, I had two amazing kills recently:

Sonic ditto:
- opponent charging side-B on the edge.
- I walked up to him and pushed him off the edge (walk-push)
- he released side-B and fell under the stage.
- death.

Sonic vs Snake:
- Snake used side-B by the edge.
- I used spinshot and walked in front of him and pushed him off the edge.
- death.

This is an amazing AT that revolutionizes the metagame.

LOL.

I am seriously using that next time I face a snake.

*Imagines tourney finals match*

Nape vs. MrSnakeGuy

*Snake used Nikita*

*Nape performs Tenking AT*

*spectators are like what the heck barbeque?*

*Nape wins, Sonic is now UBER STEAK TIER!*

I think this has to do with Sonic being hit, or in theis case perhaps shield pushed, during the vulnerable period where Sonic reaches the peak of his Usmash. I have a replay against boxob in which Sonic immediately dropped down from full vertical height of the Usmash to the ground after being hit by an arrow, which looked very similar to what happened hear. I'm guessing this has to do with shield push.
