Why’d you have to go and release this in the middle of the night? I hardly got any sleep in anticipation of this thing and ended up getting up super early (For me, anyway) to read the bloody thing!
Spade had returned while you were still online, so I decided to post it while you were both around. But I'm glad to see I was still able to get the first two comments from you guys. ^_^
That said, it was well worth a mere lack of sleep to read this godly masterpiece ASAP. I do agree with Spadefox that Black Doom’s fall was a bit rushed and sudden, but I see that you had to get it out of the way. The best part relating to him was you still managed to keep Black Doom an interesting and important character throughout the chapter and still managed to keep him perfectly in character.
I had considered making the Black Comet last for several levels, but I had no real ideas for a plot to go along with it other than "Characters are walking through the area. Whee!" At least you see why I had to finish him off right away. I had tried to make up for his quick defeat precisley by giving him a lot of screen time throughout the rest of the chapter, so at least we still got to enjoy some Black Doom goodness.
Doom’s boss fight was also interesting, particularly with all the crazy stuff he does with the platforms. I LOVED the carnivorous platform attack and Doom summoning holo clones of his weaker form. To ensure he indeed final chapter boss material, there was his holo clone of his main form to make things utterly insane.
I loved carnivoruous platforms and the Devil Doom holo-clone too. =D
But my favorite part of writing this boss had to be looking back at the prologue and comparing this fight to the first Devil Doom encounter, my first ever SM boss. You can really feel how much more advanced SM bosses have become since my prologue in MYM3. I guess Spade's SM deserves credit for the "boss movement", so to speak.
My interest in the chapter increased ten fold when we got to Spadefox’s epic speech. The whole story mode is very well connected. There being an actual universal cause for essentially everything that’s happened so far was awesome enough in itself, but you also provided Spadefox and Hyper_Ridley with interesting back stories, particularly HR wanting to recreate his race.
Lol, I was worried about the speech being too long, but at least I know I can count on you to read my movie-length cut scenes. :3
But I'm happy to hear that the speech turned out so well. That was the main thing that made me take so long to finish, I had to look back a few times to previous chapters to make sure I wasn't creating any plotholes. And of course, I loved making a plausible backstory to for my favorite character. Ridley needs lurving too you know. ;D
The following boss battle with Spadefox was the incarnation of epic. Your 20 stock hardly matters when you have only 3 minutes to do much of anything, and how you used the gigantic platform hopping to the boss battle was truly a sight to see. The first phase of the battle is among the most interesting gameplay segments I’ve ever witnessed. I’ve never been wanting to actually play something from a SM so badly before. You take a break from dodging Spadefox’s attacks only to start fighting HR. There’s no place that’s entirely safe either, as some attacks hit inbetween the platforms, cover entire platforms, it’s crazy. Also loved the attack where Spadefox leaves behind a clone of his main form on a platform. And once you kill HR, you’ve still got to kill the original Spadefox who now has an incredibly bad *** design. It’s bloody amazing I tell you. Oh, and 666% damage ftw.
Wow, I can't believe how I was able to turn that boss into something so epic when it started out so bleh. At first it was "Spadefox is in background, he smacks platform". Then I decide to create a way to actually move around Spadefox in 3-d...and the rest is history. xD
That quite honestly would’ve been a fine ending right there with Spadefox’s demise, but it’s still not over. I particularly like how you didn’t ever make HR or Spadefox betray each other by making the end of the alliance Spade’s death. HR joining together with the heroes seems much more natural this way. The levels on the way to Mewthree were pretty cool, but what I particularly liked was the little blurbs from Mewthree on the loading screen.
I had originally planned to have a 1v1 HR vs Spadefox duel, but I decided it was better to let them remain as comrades till the end. And it appears I made the right choice. ^_^
Ah, Mewthree's quotes. Those were more difficult to come up with than you might think, lol. Even the very last one felt good when I thought of it.
Finally seeing Mewthree was really cool, of course, and you spare the less detailed among us of another planet long speech (Although TBH, that’s part of what made Spadefox so epic IMO). I was surprised to see Mewthree so easily control all the characters, but it let to another unique sequence and gave Black Doom another nice moment to himself. After that, the chaos emerald battle was a sight to behold, and it only got all the more epic as the wee hours of the morning ended so I could turn on the music. The battle was very unique once again with the seven emeralds. More quality stuff. I liked how much stronger they were with all of them and how you could kill them off individually considerably.
I'm not sure if Mewthree would be capable of giving a speech. xD
Technically, the very first time we ever see Mewthree in action he had succesfully controlled Jafar and Ashencroft, and that was before he even had the Chaos Emeralds. So controlling the heroes at the end with little effort was like my way of showing "Yeah, Ridley's weapon is complete all right." And it gave Black Doom a chance to shine.
The Dark Chaos Emeralds came about after at least 3 potential semi-final battles. Originally I was gonna have Mewthree use the Emeralds in his own fight but I decided that they were important enough to the plot to warrant their own battle, so that's how that boss came about. =)
Alright, so Mewthree himself. You display his personality quite well throughout the boss fight. . .He’s. . .A psychotic little kid, essentially. And he’s the final boss. Epic. Although Mewtwo is cooler and more deserving and should’ve been in this SM over him, as well as Falco and Rob.
Yay, everybody loves the little fuzzball of doom. =D
Funny enough, my first idea for Mewthree was to have him appear as Armored Mewtwo (complete with Mewtwo's voice and personality), but as you damaged him you chipped off the armor until he looked like
his. But I decided that the pic I have now fits better with the idea of "Mew but sick and demonized".
The actual boss fight was cool, but I honestly didn’t think it was as unique as the Spadefoxian boss fight or the one against the Chaos emeralds. Either way, you do display a lot of his character through his boss fight, which is quite impressive considering you introduce him last minute. As Spadefox mentioned, the devil’s eyes or w/e it’s called is absolutely epic if for just how ****ed cool it is, whether or not it’s that unique. Anyway, it’s not so much this creepy guy isn’t epic, it’s that the Spadefox boss was impossible to beat.
Hehheh, I had a feeling that Spadefox was gonna end up better recieved. xD
I'm glad to hear I got his personality to show through the battle. Fun fact: Every final boss of a MYM4 SM is an OC that's the size of a playable character.
While I know what you mean when you say he was introduced last minute, I'd thought I'd give you another fun fact: Mewthree actually was "introduced" at the end of Chapter 1. I made a point of referencing "Ridley's ultimate weapon" throughout the entire game. Though you are right in the sense that we never see the character mentioned by name until the finale. That's buildup for ya. ;D
Alright, the ending then. Good to see Master Hand finally show himself, I’d been wondering what had happened to him. Considering all the crap everybody was talking about him, it was cool to see him finally redeem himself. Better still, you finish off Black Doom’s characterization by having him stay with Master Hand and also sacrificing himself to finish Mewthree. Very nice choice.
I always thought it would be cool to have a God be the one who has to atone for his own sins. =D
My original version of the ending had Black Doom leave with everyone else and end up taking Master Hand's place, but I (wisley) decided that there would be no way to explain Black Doom becoming a "good" ruler. So I stuck with one that would retain his character while also making Black Doom into a "hero" of sorts. And of course, the current ending is a direct reference to Master Hand's speech in the prologue that sparing Black Doom eons ago is what allowed the heroes to triumph in the end.
The various endings scenes in the epilogue were a good note to end on. Loved Hexxus nearly consuming Wispa’s wrapper. I knew I wasn’t the only one who thought “Robotnik Land” (There is no such thing as Eggman) sounded like a theme park,
. Of course I loved me taking Kibble’s position as head of the sandbags. What I liked better though was Bowser finally showing up in the very end, if only for a cameo. Indeed, Spadefox and Mewthree make poor Boozer seem cute.
As I said to Spade, I didn't want to just have Master Hand kill Mewthree and disregard all of the other characters as though they were never there. But at the same time I didn't really like having one-liner off-screen epilogues. So I ended up creating a whole bunch of mini cut scenes to show that everyone made it out okay.
And yay, glad to see some love for my last bit of comic relief. I needed to end the game on a lighthearted note in order to couteract the nightmares Mewthree will give people. xD
*Huff puff*. . .Now you see why I rushed to release my own chapter before this monstrous beast came out. It’s not perfect, but it’s **** close to it, and I doubt we’ll ever see anything better. . .Unless we get another SM from you, of course. Come MYM 6, I fully expect you to begin production of “Playing Satan!”.
Heehee, thanks. ^_^
I have thought sometimes of another SM, but whenever I had a cool idea for one, I just thought "Why not take it and implement it into Playing God?" So in the end, this SM is the cumulation of all my epic SM ideas that might have happened in future contests. Not to mention that it would be hard to top "God vs Satan with MYMers as other characters."
Though I have to admit, "Playing Satan" would tie in nicley with the 7 sins.
But in all seriousness, amazing work. I congratulate you for somehow managing to finish this thing and still keep it epic all the while with not a single segment that felt like filler. Everybody in MYM needs to read this.
…*Looks both ways*
*Huggles*
Thanks Warlord. That means to a lot to me. Both your praise and getting huggled. :3
