Smash 3DS How will you set up your controls for the 3DS version?

This thread is to discuss different possible button layouts for the 3DS version of the new Super Smash Bros.

Important to note is that, at this stage, nothing is confirmed regarding this subject. Not if it will be possible to utilize the Circle Pad Pro, or if the controls even will be cuztomizable (although we take for granted that they will be).

Personally I'm going for...

A: Jump
B: Attack
Y: Special
X: Not used (Taunt?)
R: Grab
L: Guard
Moving Attack to the middle button is the closest you can get to the GameCube controller, which means the button to the right lets you jump and the button to the left lets you do specials. L and R being grab and guard feels natural to me at least.

---

Below I've saved a few other suggestions.

I haven't referenced any quotes because a lot have suggested the same moveset and it just becomes a hazzle. This is simply a databank, in any case. Hopefully it will inspire others!

I'm going to set every single button as taunt. And win tournaments O_O

I might have to play Luigi to make that happen though ;)

For me I'll probably have to see what default looks like first in all honesty.

I would look at what the controls are by default to see if I would feel comfortable, but I think this would work the best for me:

Circle Pad - Move
+ Pad - Taunts
A - Attack
B - Special Moves
Y - Jump
X - Grab
L/R - Shield

Here's hoping they put a C-stick equivalent on the touch screen for quick smash attacks without having to buy the Circle Pad Pro.

I'm still trying to find something that is comfertable to use on the CC. It just isn't the same as the button placement of the GC for me, but the best I have found so far is;

Y - Attack
X - Special
A - jump
B - Grab
Circle Pad - Move
Control Pad - Taunt
L/R - Shield

Considering switching up B and A as I keep want to use B to jump instead. Getting use to it be tough. Q_Q

B- Special
X- Jump
Y- Grab
L- Jump
R- Shield
ZR/ZL- Attack
Left Circle Pad - Smash
Circle Pad - Move
D-Pad - taunt

BEHOLD, THE CIRCLE PAD PRO.

L- Jump

D-Pad - taunt
The right circle pad could be an alt C-stick.
Left Circle pad would be for movement.
L should also be shield.

I'm honestly not sure. Honestly now that I think about it I'm thinking Smash may be a bit awkward to control on a 3DS given the twitchy nature of the thumbstick. Maybe I should invest in a circle pad pro too, so I can have a C-Stick...

Hold your horses, You can probably get it for a discounted price in the future. Maybe Smash 4 will even come with it as a bundle.

We don't know FOR SURE if Smash 4 will be supporting it, but it is very likely will.
Sakurai has said publicly controls are his utmost concern.

Yeah, I'm aware of it, just forgot adding it to the op (since I won't be using it probably).

Funny to see that we haven't got two identical control set-ups here, seems like there's a big variety in how to set-up the controls.

Brawl allowed custom controls, so I'd imagine Smash 4 will too.

Yeah, I imagine it too.

The premise of this thread is that they allow it really.

Edit: I've redone my initial post to instead list the different control layouts that people are suggesting. Should be good for reference in the future. I've also added what we know about the new Smash and that concering controls which is... Yeah, nothing.

I actually think that I'll like the controls on the 3DS more than the Wii U. So far, I've come up with this. (I tried to emulate the GC controller as much as possible, but I probably failed)

A = Attack
B = Special
X = Grab
Y = Jump
L = Shield
R = Shield
D-Pad = Either Control Stick replacement or Taunts.
Control Pad - Control, taunts or nothing.

It's wild, but I'm hoping that maybe you can switch the roles of the D-Pad and Control Pad. The Control pad is just too twitchy for my preference.

Assuming there will be customisable controls in Smash 4 (which I really, really hope), I will most likely be using mine own special control scheme, like I did in Brawl (I used the Classic Controller). This is mine planned control scheme for the 3DS version, based on Turtles in Time:

Circle Pad = Move
Directional Pad = Taunt
B = Jump
A = Shield
X = Special
Y = Attack
R = Grab
L = Jump

I've updated the first post.

Keep 'em coming, and discuss them if you want. I have a hard time understanding some of the special control schemes. Just have a hard time seeing me use Y for attack, for example. :D

Y for attacking just felt much more comfortable for me on the classic controler. The button scheme between the CC and GC are quite different in their placement. With the CC the A buttom just doesn't feel like the right button for attacking for me and so I tried the other buttons and Y was the most comfortable. Then it was trying to find th sport for Special attacks, I originally kept it on B but kept finding myself wanting to push X instead so I changed specials to that. Then it came to jumping and grabbing, I think I put in my post that I had A to jump and B to grab well I have recently switched that up and it feels a heck of allot more comfortable for me. It all about what feels comfortable for you to use. >_>

I'll be using the "Type A Controls" used in the 3DS Super Smash Bros. rip-off game "Cartoon Network: Punch Time Explosion" (and by "rip-off" I mean it plays pretty much EXACTLY like a Smash game):

Move: Circle Pad
Pause: Start
Attack: B Button
Special Move: Y Button
Jump: X Button
Shield: L Button & R Button
Grab: A Button
Taunt: Directional Pad (Cartoon Network: Punch Time Explosion didn't have Taunts but this is what I'll use)

I'm having some feelings that I might not get the Circle Pad Pro.

Circle pad - Move
Arrow pad - taunts
X - Jump
Y - Specials
A - attack
B - attack
R - grab
L - Shield

It's the same control scheme I use for the classic controller when I play Project M. It works so why not use it for my 3DS

Debating A or B for attack and B or Y for special. Either way for either command would probably be comfortable for me.

I just got a Wii U because my Wii broke. I am forced to use the Classic Controller Pro over the Gamecube Controller (I was stupid and didn't buy the adapter). So after finally adjusting to the Classic Controller... I shouldn't have a problem with the default DS controls. They look about the same. If not... I will probably do.

X- Jump
A- Attack
B- Special
Y- Special

Im going to assume that the default controls will be VERY similar to the classic controller layout.
A-attack
B-special
Y-jump
X-jump
L-block
R-grab
Circle pad- move
Dpad- taunts

Ive been using classic controller in brawl since nintendo first said word about smash 4, so the transition to smash bros. wii u and 3ds wont be so bad :p

If Circle Pad Pro is supported (which it will be) then Right Pad for quick smash, ZR for Shielding and R for Grabs.

This is how I played Brawl with a Classic Controller so I could use aerials quicker.

Once I got the game, I'll try the quicksmash a little with the D-Pad on Home-Run Contest if it is a mode on the 3DS (if not, on a few me vs. AI), if it is not as bad as I now think it is, it'll leave it like that, use B as a grab and leave R as a Shield. If it isn't fast enough, I'll leave B as my quicksmash button. I hope there's an option like that, since there wasn't anything like it in Brawl, but KI:U has the most customizable controls ever, so I hope SSB3DS follows its path. :)
