Coming over from the N64 and the Cube most people will probably use something like:

A-Jump
B-Attack
Y-Special
X-Jump
L-Sheild
R-Grab
Joystick-Move
Dpad-Another way to move? Taunts?
CPP-Cstick

It's the logical conversion anyhow.

when i play 3ds, i rest the tip of my thumb on the Y button and the bend on the B button. the rare game that forces me to use the A as my go to button is pretty annoying.

I'd probably have something like:

Y - Attack
B - Special
X - Grab
A - Undecided. Between Jump, Shield and Grab.
L - Shield
R - Jump

Slider - Movement, Tap-Jump On
D-Pad - Taunts OR Special, depending on how I feel
(Slider-Pro: Smashes)

If the touch screen can do taunts, then I'll definitely use the D-Pad as an alternate way to use special moves.

With jump on R, I can jump while still being able to easily influence direction and keep my thumb focused on the attack button. Best way I can see to do Float Cancels for example. Dunno if I'd ever use the A button for anything. So out of the way. If I find a utility for it for some strategy, then it'll get an assignment, though.

Not entirely sure how to go about it, but I'd probably set it like this for the Wii U pad, although I plan on maybe using that Pro controller or whatever.

LZ - Shield

A - Attacks

B- Specials

Y - Grab

X - Jump (I'll probably use tap jump anyway)

Right Stick - Smash attacks (C Stick)

For Circle Pad Pro:

A - Attack
B - Special
X - Jump
Y - Jump
+ - Taunts
O - Movement
LZ/RZ - Shield
R - Grab
Right O - Smash Attacks/Aerials

I'm a tap jump man though. :yeahboi:

Only real change I can see myself making is using D-pad over circle nipple pad, when you get sweaty and in the moment that pad can't handle the moves.

Two controller layouts that don't differ all too much...

Right-Hand Controller Layout:
Circle-Pad - Movement/Jumping
A - Smash Hits
B - Special Moves
X/Y - Jumping
R - Shield
L - Grab

Left-Hand Controller Layout:
Circle-Pad - Movement/Jumping
A - Smash Hits
B - Special Moves
X/Y - Jumping
R - Grab
L - Shield

Tried the layout on my 3DS and 2DS and seemed to feel pretty comfortable!

My guess is that the touchscreen will house the damage percentages, and will also be where tou activate your final smash.

Forgot to mention back in February 17, I bought a Circle Pad Pro (almost for no real reason actually) and I'm actually pleased with it so I guess I'll use it for Smash. So my control setup with the Circle Pad Pro will be this:

Move: Left Circle Pad
Pause: Start
Attack: B Button
Special Move: Y Button
Jump: X Button
Shield: ZL Button & ZR Button
Grab: A Button, L Button, & R Button
Taunt: Directional Pad
Smash Attack: Right Circle Pad
Unknown: Select

What I used when I switched over to the classic will probably translate well to both.

A = attack
B = jump
X = grab
Y = special
ZL = jump (Just in case my sis wants me to be Peach lol)
Everything else is default.

This also matches my controls for platformers like MMZX and Castlevania pretty closely.

After a while, I think I have it.
D-Pad/Circle Pad (movement)
Circle Pad (C-Stick)
A (Neutral)
B (Special)
Y (Grab)
R (Shield)
X/L (Jump)

I'd hope taunts would be put on the touch screen. Because the d-pad replacing the C-Stick for those without CPP might be handy, and taunts aren't so important that you need them on a dime.

Well, I'm not sure if I want to get CPP or not, and there are little advanced techs that may or may not return that will determine how I will like it as well(wavedash, DACUS, etc).
I didn't ever get into Melee that much, but I loved Brawl. Eventually, the slowness got annoying, so I just play Project: M, so I will try to match my controls for that.

No Circle Pad Pro:
A - Attack
B - Special
X - Jump
Y - Taunt/Grab(If DACUS returns)
L - Shield
R - Grab/Attack(If DACUS returns)
Circle Pad - Move(duh)
D-Pad - Quick Smashes/Taunts(If DACUS returns)

With Circle Pad Pro:
A - Attack
B - Special
X - Jump
Y - Taunt
ZL - Shield
ZR - Attack(If DACUS returns)/Undecided
L - Undecided
R - Grab
Left Circle Pad - Move
Right Circle Pad - Quick Smashes
D-Pad - Taunts

And who knows what the touch screen will let us do, probably a big button for Final Smash so it doesn't override a special, and maybe taunt, since you need them instantly, like sonicbrawler said.

I seriously, seriously, SERIOUSLY hope they allow a button or the touch screen to simply be mapped as Smash Attack, because I don't want to risk breaking my 3DS's Joystick, and my 3DS isn't compatible with the CPP.

X: Jump
A: Attack
B: Special
Y: Smash, Shield or Grab if you can't do that.
D-pad: Taunts
Triggers: Shield

This is more or less entirely speculation on my part. I decided that, with the diamond organization of buttons, I could somewhat emulate a 64 controller (at least with my right hand). Since I learned to play smash with that, and played it more than any other installment, it might suit me better than the GC controller has in recent times. The slashes indicate CPP changes, if I get one (which I will if D-Pad doesn't work for smashes).

A: Jump
B: Attack
Y: Special
X: Grab/Jump
R: Shield/Grab
L: Shield/Grab
D-Pad: Smash/Taunt
2nd Pad: Smash
ZR: Shield
ZL: Shield

I have a question for you guys... Is the second stick actually comfortable? I haven't one yet, but I have just seen a couple of photos and I don't think I can get Y and X buttons easy...

I have one and it's pretty good. I for one have no problem reaching the X & Y Buttons with the Circle Pad Pro added on (then again, I kinda have big hands so I'm not sure I can speak for everyone). And for some reason I like to use the 3DS's main R Button rather than the Circle Pad Pro's R Button (yes, you can use either R Buttons with the Circle Pad Pro attached).

Can't really say much more as I barely have any games to use it on. But I'd recommend it if you need more buttons/stick for a game. Just make sure you have you stylus out as you can't take it out when the Circle Pad Pro is attached (don't know if that's the case for the Nintendo 3DS XL though).

Kind of surprised Sakurai hasn't told us if Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS has Circle Pad Pro support (but for it to be like Super Smash Bros. for Wii U I think he needs to put it in).

Believe it or not but I updated the OP.

Smash 4 hype is real.

When it comes to the Circle Pad Pro, I'm pretty conflicted myself. I accept having a 2nd stick would be useful, but at the same time, my current 3DS hand grip is incredibly comfortable. I have a hard time seeing me giving it up.

I'm honestly surprised no one wants to have the upper-arrow as a jump
I think it would be really handy and give another move option for the buttons, which apparently a lot of people think the 3DS needs

Well, button-wise I think the 3DS is fine. It only lacks one button compared to GameCube, the Z button, and I dunno how many ppl were using it.

Personally, the lack of a 2nd stick is the only possible problem I can see atm. I used to have them to do either quick smashes or some special reverse specials (like Zelda's side-B in Brawl), but this just isn't an option without circle pad pro.

I liked the idea in the thread about using the two attack buttons together to do a grab, has this been possible before?

I think grab should be shield + attack, or either just one button, like R or X
