I personally think it will be a popular game competitively, especially since Sakurai removed tripping and increased the overall speed of the game from Brawl.

What do you think? Or not?

There will be a Melee scene for many years to come, but I think many will switch to Smash U and many more will join the Smash U scene as their first.

This thread is going to be too much fun. I can already see the avatars for half of this thread's posters already.

Smash 4 will have a scene. It's the new game. Brawl even had a scene. TOs want people to come so they'll put up the new game. Now if the new game turns out to not be a fun experience competitively, people won't like playing it, so it will lose it's playerbase and get phased out. But if it's a great game competitively it can survive and thrive well beyond into the future, and maybe poach people off of Melee and PM.

tl;dr yes it will have a scene. no idea if it'll be a good one or long lasting until the game actually comes out in full. this thread is going to be a m a z i n g don't lock it please

I think it will have a pretty good scene. I'm not sure how long it will last though.

competitive scene is killed takamaru deconfirmed

Being serious though, I think it'll be pretty good. I honestly think that this game has a chance to replace Melee, and I really hope it does. I don't want to watch Melee anymore, I want to watch new and exciting gameplay, see as the game evolves, and be able to be part of it, instead of watching a decade old game be played with basically the same gameplay in each video* with only around 6 characters actively being used..

*This is mainly regarding advanced tech - this has nothing to do with playstyle

Maybe...just MAYBE....Smash 4 can develop its own advanced techs that are independent of Melee.

I really hope so. I don't want to tick anybody off, but I really am done with Melee. I honestly feel that while it has aged well, it's time is over. The more time members devote into Smash 4 means the further we are from getting rid of Melee.

Who can say? It will probably still be divisive though, if recent evidence amounts to anything.
By trying to please everyone, you please no one.

First HD release in the history of a blockbuster fighting party game franchise? Quite a while, even if some Melee fans aren't happy and never will be.

I think there's most likely gonna be a melee and pm scene for a few years down the road especially since pm is still developing..but i'm pretty confident smash 4 will still survive on it's own, I certainly do not see it suffering the same fate is brawl.

I can see both it and and pm's meta developing side by side and becoming the dominate smash scenes in the near future I also like melee might die down a bit but i cant say i see it disappearing completely.

I think it will definitely be better than than Brawl, but not close to where Melee has gotten. The only way to know is to see the events unfold once the game actually comes out.

I'm surprised there hasn't been a competitive F-Zero GX scene. I mean, the game is 3x the speed of Melee! I'd play it!

I'm thinking that Smash 4 is going to be a much more "strategic" game than Melee or Brawl.

Not enough info on the final build. Don't know what info they took away from E3 and such and what they may or may not have changed. Therefore the right answer is "I don't know".

Edit: @ Skunks Skunks Dangit dude, your sig is making me think there are flies in my room! D: I take a good amount of pride that I keep my PC area clean of food and stuff.

I like to speculate on the potential of unreleased games, especially this one (since it will probably be overshadowed by its grandfather (Melee) and uncle (Project M), regardless of how well it is).

For at least the first year, it's going to completely dwarf all other smash games. The huge influx of new people is pretty much going to guarantee this. Where it goes from there really depends on us.

It's definitely going to be bigger than the others for a while, but I'm going to go ahead and just say good/decent. It'll be way bigger than Brawl, for sure, but in the long run I doubt it's going to phase out Melee.

I wouldn't cry if they made Smash Bros for Wii-u: Tournament edition in February With ultra combos and Pink Gold Peach as a character. But Nintendo and Sakurai would never do that because a casual may accidently buy the tournament edition and cry when the game is so fast they go blind from the jump momentum and then Nintendo goes out of business as Parents cry that Smash bros is teaching kids to jump off cliffs and meteor smash their friends to hell as gaming as we know it is destroyed ALL BECAUSE SAKURAI MADE A GAME THAT REQUIRES YOU TO HAVE A FUNCTIONING BRAIN WHYYYYYYYY

For real though if they address landing lag and give me dash dancing I'll play this game even without any real advanced tactics besides turn dashing, this game could last just as long if not longer than brawls competitive scene. Just nobody will be using captain falcon because of no flying 300 M.P.H knee. Seriously why was air momentum removed. Were any casuals going to sleep with a tear soaked pillow because of that?

I can see Smash U being on the more competitive side while I see the 3ds for those casual games. I'm just guessing because me personally, I already know I'm going to suck on the 3ds version because I'm so used to the gamecube controller. So the controls on the 3ds are going to throw me off so bad that I'm just going to do casual matches because I seriously dont see myself playing at my full true extent on a 3ds but I can see myself still having fun with it regardless. I mean dude, portable smash bros for those long road trips! awww yeeeaahhh

I was being sarcastic. I've played melee for most of my life and I never slit my wrists and put pictures on instagram of how hard sakurai thinks melee is for casuals.

And I don't know of anyone who did. What's your point? You've just made three insults at casual players on one page so I can only assume you have something against us.

It will be competitive in it's own right and it's own unique way. Some people wont give it a chance and some will, that's just the way the world works.

I have nothing against any type of play. I play smash brothers semi competitively but I play casually with my cousin a lot. The reason I was making those exaggerated remarks about casual players is just that I've had that quote of sakurai saying that melee players don't understand that for someone who doesn't know how to play video games that melee was to hard stuck in my head because it just seems unbelievable to me. I played melee when I was 6 years old and had no trouble learning the bare basics. I was no good but I wasn't unable to enjoy myself and the thought of meeting anyone who finds melee to be hard to play on the most basic level makes my head hurts. The statements above do not reflect the attitudes of Casual players towards the smash series of in fact any level or players in the smash series. The exaggerated claims of difficulty were used in comedic way to show how sakurai views casual players who play melee in a exaggerated way. I didn't mean for it to sound like I meant anyone who doesn't play on tournament level is playing it wrong or something. If anything that's the way it was meant to be played. But still I'm sorry if I offended you beause that's not what I was trying to do.

Everyone will be on equal footing in this regard, and are you really so unable to adapt to a different control scheme...?

I've never played smash bros on a 3ds before so can you really blame me? lol Its not so much that I cant adapt but really more of, am I going to be as good on a 3ds compared to a GC controller? I'm sure after awhile I'll get used to it

Well, tripping's gone and there's a huge focus on balance, the fact that people might finally be able to use their favorite character will obviously draw a lot of people towards the game, and we're already finding ATs that are easier to do than the ones before!

i think it will work out decently. it will not go live as long as melee unless smash5 pulls a "brawl" on us (namely making fans of SSb4 rage because they changed the game too much, and even them, i'm not sure this is feasible without Melee AND PM dying first)

I mean, poeple say "brawl 2.0"... but hey, it's trying to fix most of what ruined Brawl. No, it's not just the super defensive play (which seems to be nerfed), but there are issues like camping and Character Balance (which might be ruined by ATs).

I can still envision Rosalina and the Ice Climbers being able to chaingrab people in the end of the day, and people like Meta Knight and Diddy still being too "overbalanced", but i think this game will be ok. For all the flak Bralw get, it had an ok livespan; i don't think smash 4 will face many problems unless we have massive chaingrabbings.

I think it will go a long way. I think that, compared to past Smash games, the characters themselves play more interestingly, especially the newcomers. Rosalina, for one, looks like she will have an infinitely evolving meta game.

Also, if people take custom moves and equipment seriously, and make tournaments that utilise them, then Smash 4 will have that as an edge. I think that might help draw some of the competitive Pokémon crowd in, as an element of strategic customisation in Smash would be right up their alley. It's something that none of the other Smash games have, so it will help give Smash 4 it's own user base.

Shoutouts to Smash Bros Italia for confirming SDI is still in the game. The Rosalina fans thought they found an infinite on the basis that opponents couldn't SDI out of Starbits. Glad to see that won't be happening. *Ode to Joy*

That said, I still think that she'll have some sort of chaingrab, but assuming the Luma can't grab opponents, she couldn't possibly be as broken as the Ice Climbers... Right?

I think, and hope, that it will become a mainstay. Not sure if it will be able to oust Melee just because of the sheer fanboy weight holding Melee in place, but I imagine Smashthrough will hold its own.
