Been playing Nintendo games since Balloon Fight when I was 4, so I'd say a HUGE factor that makes me love Smash is the fact it's such a love letter to Nintendo fans.

And to be clear, it's not blind love of the sort "oh, Nintendo made it, must be gold!" It really just happens to be the case that the products they make are, to me, genuinely the most unique and fun experiences I am able to find on the market. No other company or developer has managed to captured the sheer feeling of wonder or joy that Nintendo games have for me, with the only possible exceptions being Okami and Journey.

Character-wise, I'm really looking forward to maining Palutena given just how much sheer enjoyment I received from Kid Icarus Uprising.

Nintendo's my go to video games company. I've been with them since the SNES and I'll buy and support anything they put out.

I main Link and Toon Link because the Zelda franchise is my favorite franchise of all time and Wind Waker my favorite game. I play as the characters who are in the games I'm enjoying at the time. Samus because of Super Metroid, Mario because Mario Sunshine and 64, Ice Climbers because the Gameboy Advanced port was the only GBA game I had for about a year. I've been replaying Super Metroid and Punch-Out (Wii) recently so if Ridley or Little Mac got into Smash Bros Wii U I'd main as them. It all depends what games I'm loving at the time.

Another thing I like to do is main a different character every Smash game, so I won't be going back to Toon Link in Smash Bros Wii U. I like keeping it fresh and having a new character to learn.

i know there have been multiple things that influence my mains, and they only partially have to do with my playstyle. mewtwo wasn't exactly easy to play as in melee, but he's my main, because i ****ing love mewtwo. in brawl, it shifted a lot between characters based on who i though was cool, but i ended up liking ness a lot for his look, and he just so happened to it my playstyle perfectly. i love pokemon games, mario games, metroid games, legend of zelda games, animal crossing games, sonic games, and id sure love to play kirby, f-zero, earthbound, donkey kong, pikmin, star fox, kid icarus, and all those other games. i love nintendo and it's games and i love the characters in smash because of what they are

I love Nintendo and its characters.
The characters I choose USED to not be influenced by how much I like them, but trying out new characters actually made me fall in love with them.
I wasn't a big Luigi fan until I started playing with him in Smash. Now I adore the guy.
So next Smash, I'll main Little Mac because I love Punch Out, or Mega Man because Mega Man is awesome.
It does influence my decision now.

And I'm not to picky about which Nintendo games I play anyway. If it's made by Nintendo I'll pick it up and see how it is, and it's usually great.

That's the only reason I've ever played the series, because I like the series and I enjoy the thought of crossovers and the characters fighting each other.

That's why the roster is so important to me, and also why I ended up not liking Brawl. None of the characters I wanted made it meaning, little reason for me to play it, as opposed to Melee (aside from stages and music).

I never played Earthbound, but Ness was always my favorite in Smash 64. That's mostly because I didn't know him before. I've always loved that Smash Bros. adds in characters people may not be familiar with, even if I am familiar with all of them now.

Although in Brawl, I do play as Ike because I love Fire Emblem and Path of Radiance was awesome.

I like Link, though I never touch him in Smash. Same with Kirby and Meta Knight.

I used to main characters solely due to personal attachment. I will answer for all of my PM mains, as that is the only game I play competitively anymore.

I main Bowser due to liking villians more than heros and Mario (at the time) was my favorite franchise.
I main Mewtwo because I loved the first movie a lot and he is my favorite pokemon of all time.
I main Samus because when I first started playing Brawl with my friends I thought she was OP lol.
I main Ganondorf because of playstyle.
I main Wario because I used to play him in Mario Kart a lot (he was only behind King Boo and he was tied with Waluigi). I also main him to deal with Squirtle and because he was the first character I tried out in PM.
I use Mario because he is the main character in a series that I love very much. I also want to kill Sonic with him.
I use Snake because of Rolex.
I use Charizard because of playstyle.
I use Wolf once in a blue moon because people said that he was really good and I wanted to see for myself how good he was.

The ones I use the most, I use because of liking them, but the ones I use less I use because of the playstyle.

If you're saying you don't like any Nintendo characters you:

1) are straight up lying
2) are stupid

Sorry, but it's the truth. :secretkpop:
Or maybe I was just giving you a possible answer for someone else, you dip****. ¦D

As for me, considering that I'm not a Nintendo fan and haven't played a majority of it's franchises, it could be that I'm just...well, not a Nintendo fan. XD

But Smash itself is a fun game and I like how some of the characters in that series alone, which was the OP's question. I don't give a damn about Nintendo at all, but I love me some Smash.

Especially if Sonic is in it. ¦3

I think most Smash players love Nintendo. I certainly do - the only franchises that I really don't enjoy that are in Smash up until now are Animal Crossing, Fire Emblem, Wii Fit and the retro guys (R.O.B, Mr G&W, Ice Climbers). I absolutely adore Kirby, The Legend of Zelda and Pikmin and they are my favourite franchises. They don't affect how I pick my characters in Smash though - Marth is my main despite I disliking Fire Emblem :p I go with the playstyle. And it seems Marth and Mac are going to be my choices for this game :) The only character that I always main due to how much I enjoy him outside of Smash is good ol' Kirby. I will main Megaman because of how much I like him too :)

I still care about some of Nintendo's franchises, so yeah, I do care about the company indirectly. But to answer OP's question, I play as Peach in any game she is in, be it Smash Bros or Mario Bros games. Pikachu, on other hand, is far from being a Pokémon I care about, yet he was and still is my main in SSB64. Samus is another character I played a lot with and yes, I absolutely love the Metroid series and I can't wait for the most recurrent villain of the series to join Smash. I will totally play with him regardless of his style.

Also, you will never see me playing with Star Fox or Fire Emblem characters, or even Pokémon characters besides Pikachu, because I honestly don't care much about these franchises, even though I enjoyed Fire Emblem Sacred Stones and I've also played every single main line Pokémon game (I am just tired of the franchise and I am not a fan of Game Freak is turning the franchise into). On other hand, I love The Legend of Zelda, but I hardly touch a Zelda character in SSB. Also, Ness was my third most played character in SSB64, even though I am yet to finished a Mother game. So I dunno, I think I just play with whatever looks cool/has a good gameplay, save for a few exceptions.

Of course. I use the entire Mario cast (and Luigi in particular) because it's my favourite series of all time.

*Raises hand* I have liked Nintendo since I was 4 and plan on keeping it that way. Looking at Sony and Microsoft's business practices does not interest me in the slightest. Nintendo seems to be the only hardware company who is actually producing a gaming console and knows how to make games for it or has an idea of what they want so it will work perfectly; instead, of all the bells and whistles that the PS4 and XBox One promise.

I always pick my characters/mains on how much I appreciated their games and back story.

I use Peach, Ice Cilmbers, Rosalina&Luma, Villager(play animal crossing), and Olimar simply because I like their games (and have played them) and their overall nature.

Characters like Ike, Meta-Knight, Link, and Little Mac I would never pick up because of how violent they come off to me.

Just a weird way I have of choosing my characters.

I grew up playing or at least being exposed to a lot of the franchises. But over time, I started to get tired of them, particularly Super Mario, Zelda, and Pokemon since they started to feel redundant. The only series I consider myself a huge fan of is Metroid.

When it comes to choosing characters, I usually just pick whoever feels fun to control (e.g. Marth, Captain Falcon, Mario, etc.). I think with Smash 4, Mega Man is probably the sole exception as a character I really want to main irregardless of difficulty curve or tier placing.

I did try some games out just because of Smash though, those being FE11/12 and F-Zero GX. One of these days, I'll consider Mother 2/3.

I'm a Nintendo fan, but not just because of their franchises....it's moreso because Nintendo still offers plenty of the types of games I play. I'm not a fan of the Sony/Microsoft "Every game is an FPS/Or Western RPG sandbox game" thing. I only own a 360 (and I'll likely own a next gen system from Sony/Microsoft) is because of third party games that aren't on Nintendo systems.

I mean, I was a huge Sega/Nintendo fan. I owned both system in the 16-bit era. So, I guess I still like playing the genres I liked back then. Nintendo still gives me tons of fun platformers and outlandish, colorful games. So yeah, I love Nintendo.

As far as Smash, I admit...I main Sonic and forced myself to get good as him just because I'm a huge Sonic fan. I'm torn for SSB4 though....I love Mega Man almost as much. I guess I'll just reenact Worlds Collide.

If you don't like Nintendo what's the point of buying a Wii U or 3DS and than buying Smash? All that's doing is supporting them.
That's not what the OP asked though. He asked about characters canonically, basically from their original incarnate. Most of the characters and the games they come from I don't particularly like, I don't dislike them either just neutral. The only game series I truly love that is repped in Smash is Fire Emblem, however I, generally, prefer the not so important characters and the villains from the games.

However the gameplay of Smash is top-notch.

Now just because I don't particularly like Nintendo for why the OP asked doesn't mean I dislike Nintendo as a company. It's my favorite video game company because it has most of my fave games on it, but rather ironically most of those games are 3rd party games but most of them haven't appeared on another console.

Ive never been particularly loyal to nintendo games.
I'm all about fighting games. It just so happens that Nintendo consoles seem to get the best fighters, more quality and less quantity.
The Wii had the definitive edition of guilty gear, the clash of ninja series which is the only real Naruto fighting game, and of course smash bros/project m, missed out on tekken and soul cal and king of fighters though. The gamecube era was pretty lacking, but melee and soul caliber 2 were plenty, although I still feel a gap where tekken and the other soul calibers were missing. The n64 had smash bros, wcw vs now, and some sh#$#@ fighters like fighters destiny, deadly arts, clay fighter and killer instinct which introduced me to the genre. Never been a fan of the fighters on other consoles like street fighter clones and mortal kombat because the lack of maneuverability and limited combo setups frustrate me. The wii u has got a strong start with tekken tag 2 but its not really the definitive edition, sometimes I think I shoulda bought a ps3 for tekken soul cal and persona 4 arena.
But over the years I have come to enjoy games like Zelda, which never fail to leave me awestruck.

Anyway as a fighting game fan Im totally stoked to finally have lil mac enter the arena. I always pick Steve Fox, Dudley, etc...
Boxers get me hyped.

I only own a Wii U and I love Nintendo. That being said, I think they need to get their stuff together or they're going to fall apart. I don't dislike XBOX One or PS4 but nothing they're doing really appeals to me yet. That could change.

A bit of both I think from my end. As much as I enjoy the Donkey Kong and Mario series, I don't tend to play their characters very often. Although, Smash 4 has me intrigued to try them all for some reason. Who I really liked when it came to Smash was Kirby, King Dedede and Ness. Ness was someone I liked from the very beginning simply because he played so differently from the other characters, leading me to finally play Earthbound and love the series.

I love all the characters in Smash, and that's why I seem to use all of them instea of maining one. Now in the past, I did main Yoshi because he's my favorite video game character, but I no longer prioritize him because I want to master thee characters.

My three favorite video game developers are Nintendo, Capcom, and Square, so while I'm a huge Smash Bros fan, that's partly because I love the gameplay and partly because I love that it brings together all these characters, games, songs, and franchises together that I'm a fan of. I've also discovered some series through Smash, which is another reason why I like the series.

My mains since the beginning of the series have been Link and Fox, which come from my two favorite Nintendo series. Everyone else I play as because I'm a fan of their game and the character.

And has been previously said, how can you be a fan of Smash and not a fan of Nintendo?

Anyways, I don't dis like any of them, but I never got into Kid Icuras.
maybe hate is a bit harsh, I wont ever play any nintendo game for fun other than smash and fire emblem. I guess i dont HATE them, but i dont find mario zelda mario kart, kid icarus, or whatever else nintendo has to be remotely fun at all. Pokemon is cool though i guess

Love Nintendo.
Think the Wii U will see a huge turnaround this year.
My Smash wish list doesn't consist of 3rd party characters.
Love every single instalment of Smash (except Project M, they changed a lot of stuff on there for no reason. why the hell would you get rid of Game & Watch's parachute for his up b? why?)
I was actually excited for Rosalina & Luma's confirmation.
I use the Wiimote and Nunchuck for Brawl.
I buy Nintendo consoles for 1st party games, so I don't complain when they don't get 3rd party titles.
Pikmin 3 is an unbelievably overlooked game.
I loved all the New Super Mario Bros. games.
I'm one of few excited for Tropical Freeze.
I've bought a few virtual console games once on Wii, and then again on Wii U because they are so good.
Mario Sports games are more exciting and fun than regular sports game.
I don't care that Bowser is always the main villain in the Mario games and don't understand why people complain.

My first console was a NES.
My first game was Super Mario Bros.
NES, SNES, GAMEBOY, GAMEBOY COLOUR (Pokemon edition), N64, GAMEBOY ADVANCE, GAMECUBE, DS, WII, 3DS, WII U. Have not missed out on a major Nintendo console/handheld release and I don't plan to.

I am obviously the odd one out on this forum seeing as it was founding through a competitive community who only have a Gamecube for Melee.
But I am a Nintendo fanboy, and I am proud of it.
Would rather enjoy the games they release instead of whining like a little b itch because they don't follow the trends of the current gaming norm.

I honestly don't understand the mind set of people who pick a charcter because they like them in other games, like if you like link play zelda, if you like how link plays in smash play link in smash. Smash is a fighting game Cammy is my favorite charcter in street fighter but i play juri because i want a fire ball. Maybe im the odd one out.

I honestly don't understand the mindset of people who pick a character they don't have any attachment to, just because of how she or he plays. As much as I like playing Peach, I would never pick her if I didn't like her design or the franchise she comes from.
