Not Nintendo as in the company itself, as that would cause unnecessary debate. What I mean is, do you guys actually like Nintendo characters canonically, or just their Smash incarnates? For example, I am fully aware that Kirby isn't known for being the most profitable Smash character, and being a skilled Kirby user is no walk in the park. However, I main Kirby for the plain and simple reason that he's my favorite video game character of all time, and I think games featuring him are pretty enjoyable. How many people have a similar mindset? Or do you some of you guys simply main characters that are favorable to your playstyle while ignoring favoritism bias? Are you interested in the canonical Nintendo franchises starring your favorite Smash characters? Or is Smash 4 the only game that has you hyped? It's just something I was always curious about, so let's discuss below!

I ****ing hate that Meta Knight is the top tier god of Brawl. I planned to main him right from his announcement (unless a certain space dragon had become playable) because I absolutely love his roles in the Kirby games, but now everyone think I main him just because he's OP as ****

But yeah, I follow Nintendo's games all the time, the reason I love Smash above all else is because it's a gathering of all my favorite characters. The reason I want Ridley in so badly is also because he's my favorite video game character of all-time. I generally choose my characters depending on how much I like them outside of Smash: Meta Knight is only behind Ridley as my favorite video game character. Samus is the main protagonist of my favorite video game franchise. Wario Land 2 was my first game ever, and I also play Wario quite often in the Mario spin-offs. Jigglypuff is one of my favorite Pokémons, even more so when I was smaller, and was the first character I played in Smash. Mario is usually my man in the multiplayer Mario games. Kirby is the protagonist of my second favorite video game franchise ever. I don't like playing Ness in Smash though, despite Earthbound being my favorite video game of all-time.

There are exceptions though, I only play Ike and Captain Falcon because I enjoy their movesets, otherwise I've only barely touched a Fire Emblem game before, and while I do enjoy F-Zero and F-Zero X ocassionally they're nowhere near my favorite games.

As for still caring about Nintendo: I own both a Wii U and 3DS, and I'm super psyched for future releases like DKC:TF, Mario Kart 8, Kirby Triple Deluxe, while I also love newly released games like 3D World and X & Y. So yeah, I still care a lot about Nintendo, always have and always will.

I'll answer.

"What I mean is, do you guys actually like Nintendo characters canonically, or just their Smash incarnates?... ...Or do you some of you guys simply main characters that are favorable to your playstyle while ignoring favoritism bias?"
Depends.
I was a bit biased before when I was a kid (never really knew any other franchise other than Mario and Pokemon. So I went with what I knew...)

But now, I am a bit biased in another way (I picked my mains based on the face that they're retro).
Though admittedly, I do expect my mains to change rapidly (this will be my first real experience playing a Smash game. So my predictions on who I'll use (Mr. G&W, Ice Climbers, and ROB) will be put to the test).
If anything, knowing how I am, I might lose ROB and Ice Climbers. And pick up Megaman and Olimar (or Luigi).

"Are you interested in the canonical Nintendo franchises starring your favorite Smash characters?"
Depends, I've only played one Game and Watch game (Game and Watch Gallery 2). I've still yet to go to Ice Climbers, and I'm not sure about ROB.

"Or is Smash 4 the only game that has you hyped? It's just something I was always curious about, so let's discuss below!"
No, there's a couple others. Though I'm still waiting for the day SMB3 gets released on the 3DS.

I think a bit of both.

characters like Toon Link and Mewtwo are characters that I mostly enjoy playing as because they are also one of my most favourite videogame characters of all time. Whereas characters such as Ness and Kirby were characters I grew to like because I enjoyed their playstyles since I never played their games prior.

However with that said, once I do end up familiarizing with these characters I do tend to do a bit of a research to what their game of origin was and see if there is anyway to play those games. Usually afterwards I also become a big fan of those characters themselves and their series too.

I like Luigi as a character, so the Year of Luigi was a great surprise, and I also like playing him in Smash (mostly in Melee and PM because of his wavedash.)
On the other hand, I hate playing the Zelda characters in Smash but I'm always exited for new Zelda games to come out.

I definitely am connected to some of the characters still. Samus, for one. The Zelda characters and universe, for sure. And... well, the Mario, Kirby, and Donkey Kong etc. games are fun to play.

As far as who I choose to play in Smash, I don't think it's super bound to who I like character-wise... I'm a Lucas main, but I've never played his game. I liked Earthbound, though?

Honestly, I'm not a fan of Kirby games, I main him because he feels liker the most fun Smash character. Yoshi, however, I play due to my love of Yoshi's Story.
Other characters, like Mario and Link, I like as Nintendo characters but not as Smash combatants, they seem comparatively bland IMO.

Of course! Smash is the reason so many Nintendo franchises I never knew about came to my knowledge. I came to love those franchises as a result of Smash Bros..

Well, this is why I loved the SSE too...
It FORCED you to play with other characters, in other to continue with the story

I already mained Pika, because I'm a poké fan, but I also started to play with Zamus, Peach, Ice Climbers, and Ike. All were very enjoyable characters!

How can someone who doesn't like Nintendo characters like Smash Bros. really.
That's really the point I am trying to get across here. You'd be surprised the amount of people who think Smash is the only good franchise Nintendo has. I want to know how many people on Smashboards are against or opposed to that mindset, basically. I don't want to sound like a Wii U ****er or anything, but let's take that console for example. There are several people I've noticed who would literally ignore upcoming/recent Nintendo games like Mario, Donkey Kong, Pikmin, and Xenoblade while only looking forward to Smash. However, then again, Nintendo hasn't really released many older/lesser-known franchises aside from DK and Xenoblade, but still.

I think saying I care about Nintendo is an understatement. Anyone who thinks smash's the only good Nintendo game needs to get their head out of a dark place.

I always main characters based on playstyles. There are plenty of characters that I love dearly but don't enjoy using as a result of their moveset (Link, Toon Link, Zelda, Mewtwo, Sonic, etc). But at the same time there's a lot of characters I don't really care for outside of Smash but love using them as a result of their moveset (Sheik, Wario, DK, Marth, etc).

In fact now that I think about it Pokemon Trainer is the only character I've ever been a huge fan of outside of the Smash series and mained because of their playstyle as well.

But keep in mind this is coming from a Nintendo fan that loves plenty of their games outside of Smash.

I still care about them even if they don't care about their on hardcore players.
Obviously Smash isn't being targetted towards the hardcore players anymore, but I do think Nintendo shows appreciation towards their dedicated fans in general. A casual player would never care about the depth that the Pokémon games actually possesses in their gameplay for example. The last stage in Super Mario 3D World is hard as ****, definitely not anything for 8 year old Jimmy. Metroid is in general geared towards the hardcore Nintendo players. They also listened to us when we asked for Earthbound.

While Smash isn't necessarily so hardcore friendly anymore, and even then we won't be able to tell until we have the game in our hands, I do get the feeling that Nintendo as a whole cares about the hardcore community that wants to be challenged by their games every now and then.

I will main characters based on tiers. If that character is really cool like rosalina... Then icing on the cake.

Now if I really like how a character plays then I will use them regardless of tier list.

I do not judge people based on what character they mained.

I care all about my faves in the genuine level stemming from their own games... except Pikachu which I've grown bit bland after being exposed everywhere as mascot of the series.

But yeah.

Old man here. I grew up with Nintendo and have followed them from day 1 of their venture into videogames. I love the Mario series. I play them with my wife and child. Love Punchout, have played the DK series and Kirby series as well. That's what attracts me to Smash. All these great characters that I grew up with. I want Nintendo to succeed and return to their glory days of old.

I LOVE Nintendo. It's not blind as I still get upset over certain decisions but I love Nintendo and care about Nintendo as much as I did when I was in high school and had even more time for video games.

As for the characters themselves I am still in love with Donkey Kong and Bowser. There designs are cool but not too cool with random scarves/belts/angst thrown in. Plus each of their main line games have been fantastic in the last few years. Less so with the NSMB series but fantastic all the same.

I play smash for the gameplay, always have always will. I don't care about most of the characters' or their games, the only character that is remotely close is Charizard and that only for nostalgia reasons as I find Pokemon very boring now and he's tied to awful mechanics that make him worthless. And characters I would actually love to see have no chance or almost no chance in hell to get in.

So yea the characters I main in each game are based on play style alone and is all I care about in the characters in Smash.

Nintendo's probably the only video game developer that I regularly support and I'm a fan of nearly all its franchises. Smash Bros pretty much smashes together everything I already love about the company into one series so it's only natural that I'm a big fan of Smash Bros.

Smash incarnates only, for the most part. I haven't played games of majority of the roster since the very first Smash and they still holds true up to now.

Hell, I was honestly done with Smash after Melee since I had my fill. The only reason I got Brawl was because Sonic was in it. Even further, Mario, Sonic and Mega Man all being in the same game together is one of the few selling points of Smash 4 for me. XD

Miss Fit and Rosalina being the other two. Now I just need the icing on the cake, or rather, the Captain on the Falcon...Or maybe that's the other way around. -~-

I've been a Nintendo fan my whole life (the only series from them I haven't touched yet is Fire Emblem, which isn't going to be like that for long), and I'm not seeing that changing anytime soon. Hell my two favorite games of all time happen to be on the N64, but that's probably not important.

And I've always liked playing Luigi. I don't care if he's in a lower tier, he's one of my favorite characters ever, and I love him no matter what.

Yep, all my main characters I play because I enjoy their own games (like Ness, Lucas, Link, Samus, etc.)

Most of them are also low tier but I like playing the underdog so that's icing on the cake

I'll never understand those who only play for movesets

I weigh both my affinity for a character/series and their playstyle before I choose a main. Usually this ends up with me maining whichever character has the most balanced compromise between likability and a moveset I find to be fun.

I absolutely adore Nintendo, but I'm not sure if I actually "care" about them anymore, as while I think several upcoming games look great, I still have no desire to actually buy a Wii U. Most of my favorite of Nintendo's IPs are unlikely to ever get a new game, and while I like Mario, Zelda, etc as much as the next guy, they're not my absolute favorite series. I love Nintendo's franchises and their company history, but sometime starting in the last few years I've just stopped caring. This is a symptom of a greater disillusionment with video games and the industry in general, but Nintendo's market strategies lately have also contributed to turning me away. Luckily, my enthusiasm for Smash hasn't been squashed. It's basically the only game I play these days, and always has taken up a vast percentage of the time I spend playing games. This is because the gameplay is so enthralling. At some point, Smash ceased to be just one of the Nintendo games I played, and instead became a hobby all its own, separate from the more broad "playing video games" hobby I hold to a lesser interest.

There's nothing wrong with primarily playing Smash because of the gameplay. I personally entered the fanbase by getting hooked on the gameplay first (Mario and the Pokemon were the only characters I knew in SSB64), then my enjoyment was heightened tenfold when I became a fan of the individual franchises. But I stayed for the gameplay. I like characters in both games, but there's a reason I still play Smash and don't bother with PlayStation All-Stars anymore.

I like Nintendo as a whole, so of course I care. Sonic is my favorite game character of all time, so of course I'll buy the game anyway because he's in it, and Mega Man was instant buy anyway, but even without the third parties I'd still get it. Smash is Nintendo, Nintendo is my childhood. And my preferred gaming company.

I main characters that I love outside of Smash. Olimar, Bowser, Toon Link, and King Dedede are characters that I absolutely adore, and their movesets are great as well. An exception is R.O.B., since I learned about him through Smash Bros.

Smash has gotten me to appreciated Nintendo characters i never would have known about prior, and i need to hand it to Sakurai for that.
I never would've come to love characters like G&W, Ice climbers, Marth, Ness, or Samus without first seeing them in smash, where their worlds are brought alongside familiar characters in a way where young me could play around with familiar characters like Mario or Kirby while simultaneously learning about the countless other Characters and games that Nintendo has to offer. Smash is an amazing tool in this aspect. (this was also the reason brawl's trophies disappointed me, barely any retro characters or misc series, kind of killing the exciting feeling of getting a character you have never seen before.)

Well, Smash had gotten me into several Nintendo characters such as Marth & Roy's inclusions in Melee which is what got me into the Fire Emblem series in the first place.

I've been caring for Nintendo since I bought in Nintendo 64.

Well I have a long history with Nintendo since 1989, so when I played the first Smash my main was Samus (one of my top ten series, called me biased but nothing beats Ridley as Boss when you first saw him). Anyway back to the topic, Samus was my main and favorite character because of her playstyle, then it came Melee and I change of mains being the Ice Climbers and Marth with a little bit of Ganondorf in there and finally was the time of Brawl my mains were Ice Climbers, King Dedede, Marth and Olimar until now. Probably in this new game it will change again to see what style I like the most and how the game mechanics have changed, but at least I know that Rosalina, Ice Climbers and Olimar will be played frequently because of their movesets.

PD. I have play every series except Earthbound, is the only one that have not interested me so far, maybe I will give it a chance this year and see if I fall in love like with other Nintendo Series.

There are some characters where I like there regular versions more than there smash versions. One example is Lucas. In the SSE they made him such a coward and that is nothing like he was in his game. And another one I didn't like was Toon Link. In wind waker he had very comical facial expressions but in Brawl I feel like they made him too serious.

Yeah, when I grew up playing Melee, that's when I had learned about Mr. Game and Watch, Ice Climbers, Ness, Marth, Roy, and Captain Falcon. As I got older, I started learning which franchises and series they were from, so yeah.

I love Nintendo a lot. I sold my 360 and Ps3 because they were sitting there not being used (Except for occasional Banjo Kazooie on the XBLA), but I have both a 3DS XL and a Wii U... Not that the Wii U gets used a lot, though that's more because I'm too broke to buy DKC and SM3DW.

As to Smash characters, I don't love all of them AS characters.. Lucas is one of my favorites but I've never played Mother 3 let alone Earthbound.. Roy was my Meleein, but I haven't touched a single Fire Emblem game.. But liking a character helps. I was so stoked that Ivysaur was playable, and it didn't hurt that she is one of my best in Brawl and especially PM.

I absolutely love Nintendo and I have been a fan since I was a little child. Smash to me is bringing together a lot of great series Nintendo owns with some of their best characters and pit them against each other.

When it comes to maining a character, the characters that I main are characters that I like outside the Smash franchise. Luigi is my favorite video game character of all-time; I don't care for what tier he is on, I will still play as Luigi. I always try to hone my skills as a Luigi player to become one of the best, but I hide my skills.
Speaking of tiers, I really don't care that Meta Knight is incredibly OP. I find it hilarious that he is, but I main him since he is my favorite character in the Kirby series and he does have a fun moveset.

While I love the characters outside of Smash, I feel as though that characters like Ganondorf and Wario aren't represented properly in Smash. Less so with Wario since he has a whacky moveset, but he needs Wario Land moves. Ganondorf though… don't get me started.
Despite the fact that I haven't played too much of F-Zero, I love Captain Falcon's moveset. He was incredibly fun to play as in Smash 64.

I main characters that I enjoy outside of Smash and I definitely enjoy the games outside of Smash. While Smash is a fantastic fighting game, I've equally viewed it as a celebration of sorts for Nintendo's long history.

Of course I care about it! I want them to do well, and I'm still waiting to see my favorite series...

<---

Returned to it's former glory, which DKTF looks like it's making a big leap towards. Still needs more corocodiles, but as long as there aren't Kremlings in DK, I'll be waiting...

Oh, and I will always love Zelda and Fire Emblem, so there's that. Don't think I'll be leaving Nintendo behind as long as those series are with her.

I main Pokemon Trainer because of my fandom of pokemon. If I wasn't a poke' fan I probably would be playing someone else (maybe, I do like PT's play style a lot). The same could be said about Ness and Sonic. I gravitate to these characters because I enjoy their games. I honestly dislike Sonic's playing style for the most part but I still find myself selecting him because I like the character himself. However I must say that I always enjoyed playing Ike and Captain Falcon and I've never played a game they were in. Even though I've played awakening (and thoroughly enjoyed it), I could never see Chrom replacing Ike just because of the impact he had in brawl.

I absolutely love Nintendo, but the characters I chose aren't influenced much by the actual character. Luigi and Pit are really the only characters that I like inside and outside of SSB.
