OK, on April 13 of 2029, an asteroid will miss Earth, but Barely (it will come closer than our satellites). If it passes by a small area of space called a Keyhole (1% chance of happening), the it will orbit Earth a couple of times before striking in 2036. A former Astronaut calculated a path that goes through Siberia, the Pacific, Central America, the Atlantic, and ending in Africa (it is NOT a straight line). Also, the Meteor is tiny by comparison to the Dink Killing KT asteroid, so the most sever effects would happen if it hit the Pacific near California (Huge Tsunamis, that's why). Unfortunately, we can only track asteroids during night (for obvious reasons), so an asteroid coming from the direction of our sun will give us a 1 week warning, barely enough time for evacuation (think Katrina's Evacuation, and now compress it into a week). In full reality, our current technology can only warn people where it's gonna land, and send out Warnings to avoid instant death (side effects? You're on your own pal). Blowing the sucker up (ala Armageddon) won't work because A:The meteor can definitely survive a Nuclear explosion and B: if it does work, now we got Buckshot coming at us. There are other theories, but so far, none have been developed (except a warning system).
