A Nintendo Direct comes around before the release of SSB4. We're all super pumped to see who gets revealed. The hype is real. The Direct begins with a Smash Bros trailer. There's the logo, the heartbeat sound, and then...wait a second, something isn't right. Chrom? Lucina? Wait, this is just the Lucina/Robin reveal trailer! Did Nintendo make a mistake? This isn't right! You can practically hear groaning from around the globe, and then suddenly, we come up to the part where Lucina is Falcon-punched, she's thrown backwards, the green slash that we once all thought could be Monado Purge but it turned out just to be wind magic from Robin happens...and then the smoke clears. Robin isn't there, it's Shulk! SHULK FORESEES VICTORY! THE GROANS HEARD FROM AROUND THE GLOBE SUDDENLY BECOME FANGIRL SQUEALS! THE HYPE IS REAL! IT'S REYN TIME! HOLY CRAP YES THIS IS SO AMAZING AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH-
...Sorry, got a little carried away there. But it certainly seems like it would be really cool, doesn't it?
Don't worry, friends! Shulk will be revealed, not to worry at all! By the way, thought I'd share how I predict his reveal to be:
"So, theres a dank, dark cave. And you see footsteps, and the legs if a boy walking past a pile of rocks in the cave. Behind the rocks, after the boy passes, a Jigglypuff appears and follows the boy and attacks. The boy is attacked. In the dark cave, you see only the silhouette of the boy. Hus eyes glow blue, and is revealed to be Shulk. Cue Shulk gameplay for a minute or so, inclding Jigglypuff as another fighter.
It goes back to the trailer. Shulk begins to walk away and travels to the back of the cave, along with the Jigglypuff. They reach the deepest chamber. Suddenly, they see a large figure lurking in the chamber. Light pours in and it is revealed to be Mewtwo. Shulk prepares for battle and cue more gameplay of Shulk and Mewtwo.
The trailer ends with Shulk panting, worn from battle. His eyes glow blue. Mewtwo's eyes glow yellow. Trailer over."

Just wait. Xenoblade was released in Europe on August 19th, 2011, marking the first time it had been localized for all the English speakers. Sakurai likes those anniversary dates. This Robin/Lucina/Falcon happened because this was literally in honor of anniversary dates of games for both series.
I still think he in why else the monolith soft staff keep tweeting about smash? I think they know there character is in but don't know the date he is going to be put in the game.
We took a major blow today, but I wouldn't give up all hope--not yet. Shulk himself has prepared some advice to us in these harsh times; let me turn it over to him now. #MonadoMondayForever

Starts off with Melia defending a grounded Shulk from a ferocious Meta-Knight....
Oh no, Meta-Knight is about to land a fatal blow!
But wait! Reyn jumps in and saves the day!
"It's Reyn time," he shouts as he punches Meta back to where he belongs!
....and you know how the rest goes
The trailer closes with a brilliantly stated, "Let's not lose our heads now"

I know Gematsu leak is basically dead, but Sal is still confident in Shulk being in the game.
If anyone wants to keep believing that leak and just assume he was given wrong/outdated info, go ahead. Shulk will still be playable either way, I still believe so.
It was difficult for me and many others to watch Chrom's de-confirmation as a playable character; however, the appearance of both Robin and Lucina more than compensated for that loss.
I now pledge my allegiance to Shulk's playability! ^-^
Perhaps, but there's also no point in going to a character's support thread and specifically being a downer about their chances. Everything that people on this thread thought supported Shulk's chances still apply, the only thing that has taken a hit is Gematsu's credibility, and most supporters were here long before Shulk was ever mentioned in that leak.
In a sense, nothing has changed for us here so why would we be any less sure of him than we were before?
Exactly. Everybody assumed Chrom would be, but they were disappointed. However, there was no evidence for Chrom. There wasn't rampant teasing like there is for Ridley. There wasn't a huge amalgamation of facts and details supporting them like there is for Shulk. Most of the other character threads survive on hype and assumptions, so it's safe to be cautious.
Still, assuming that means Ridley or Shulk is automatically in can be dangerous.
Nevertheless, "the future doesn't belong to you!" Hope for Shulk still exists.
Humongous petition to get Xenoblade localized, one of the most requested characters in Japan, Sakurai's a fan of Xenoblade, he is popular, both Japanese and English VAs of his have teased to secret projects within a month of each other...
Have you been reading the stuff we've been compiling here?
See, I never got this. Why would a character have to worry about another character unless they're incredibly similar? Ridley, Mewtwo, and K Rool may be more popular (Haven't checked any polls recently) but none of them are anything like Shulk. Why can't they all be in without worry? They'd all be different.
There's a lot of people saying Shulk's still likely but not really explaining why, so I'll do the favor of posting some of these reasons (and I'm sorry if I miss one or two)
This is a long post, feel free to skim the headlines of each argument. That kind of serves as your tl;dr.
1) Gematsu isn't 'dead'
Before I stop mentioning Gematsu altogether, I would like to say that it's not necessarily dead. The Gematsu leak predicted a ton of characters, and we still have that sneaky spirit from Rythm Heaven that was spotted in Smash Run. It's possible that the leaker sending Sal Romano the emails could have mistaken seeing a completed model of Chrom for him being a character. The point is that we just don't know. It's probably best we hear an explanation from the leaker before we make our final conclusions on this. It could be that Shulk was planned for today but then moved to a later date for some reason, and the monolith developer who retweeted the character reveal today could have been mistaken in the same way the leaker was. The credibility of the leaker needs to be more stabalized for this point to have any weight, however.
That's all I'm saying about Gematsu
2) Sakurai's tweet of a real life Monado. 8/30/2013 http://operationrainfall.com/2013/08/30/sakurai-tweets-xenoblade-press-start/
Sakurai tweeted a picture of a monado that was at the press-start concert. It seems to have just been on the concert floor, by the players, for some reason. Perhaps Xenoblade music was being played? Nobody knows. Also, nobody knows the true intentions behind Sakurai's tweet. He could be a huge fan of the series or could have just found it neat. However you want to take it, there's only positives that can be taken from this as far is Shulk's inclusion in Smash 4.
3) Shulk is a commonly demanded character
Out west, as seen by this thread, vgtribune's Smash Poll 2012, and "Shulk for Super Smash Bros 4" fb page, Shulk is a hugely requested character. However, out in Sakurai's habitat, Japan, Shulk seems even more popular than he is here.
Sakurai is paying attention to the people's requests which is seen by how he wanted vgtribune to send him the top few winners from the poll back in 2012. Many of our top requested characters have made it into the game, whether characters, assist trophies, or stage hazards.
4) Shulk can be easily translated into Smash 4
This may seem obvious to people but it's nonetheless important. The main argument people had against Ridley before that Nintendo Direct was that he is too big, implying he would not easily translate into Smash. The opposite can be used as an argument for Shulk. It's easy to make and implement a unique moveset for him. His auto attacks, arts, and monado arts lay out the potential moves he can have. When making the moveset for my ssbb mod, I didn't have to be very creative at all; although, I could have been had I had the resources Sakurai does.
5) "But I am no ordinary swordsman!"
Robin said this in the announcement today, and the truth of the matter is, this is important to people. The "no similar swordsmen" argument derived from the "no clones" argument, and it's valid for characters like Chrom or Lucina but not for Shulk. Shulk isn't just another swordsman, he is the wielder of the Monado, a powerful and unique weapon. For those who haven't played Xenoblade, the Monado opens up like a banana (Bonado ) and a beam of energy comes out. This beam can vary in length, so it's not like it would have to be just like a sword with shock flags. More importantly, the Monado has a number of Monado Arts that could acts as B attacks, such as Monado Purge, Monado Cyclone, Monado Eater, Monado Speed, Monado Armor, and Monado Shield.
6) Voice actor of Shulk stated he's Voice acting in new game(s)
"I have been working on a new game recently. I can't say what it is yet but I was very pleased to see it trending on Twitter when it was announced. It's very satisfying to know there's a buzz and anticipation for a project you're involved in." http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2013/03/ninterview_meet_adam_howden_voice_actor_for_shulk
"Done some VO on several very exciting games so far this year. I'll tell you what they are when I know my balls won't be cut off for telling." https://twitter.com/A_HOWDZ
7) Monolith Soft is the maker of Xenoblade
Monolith Software used to be third party but came to be owned by Nintendo and so 1st party before Xenoblade was released. This means Nintendo is free to use Shulk if they want, without special permissions. This also makes Monolith the only 1st party developer company without a representation in the Smash bros series. Furthermore, Monolith Soft also worked on Smash bros brawl, which puts into place even further connections to Sakurai.
8) Xenoblade's sequel
The sequel to Xenoblade, Xenoblade Chronicles X, has an unknown amount of connection to Xenoblade. We know some guy at Nintendo treehouse said, "It's more of a spiritual sequel" when roughly asked how much the game relates to Xenoblade. We know there's a girl with two monado hairpins. We know that there's a nopon with the Satata's Japanese name (also sports similar glasses to Satata). I have my own arguments about the game, but I won't go into them. Anyways, connections to Shulk raise his relevance by lowering his obscurity and raising his foot print in Nintendo's timeline of gaming.
The sequel also improves the '7) Monolith Soft argument' because it means Monolith plays an even larger role in Nintendo.
9) Xenoblade is a masterpiece
Some awards (only the ones where Xenoblade got first place):
IGN [US] - 2012 Best Wii U / Wii Game
IGN [US] - 2012 People's Choice Best Wii U / Wii Game
Nintendo Life - Staff Award for Wii Retail Game of 2012
Nintendo Life - Community Award for Wii Retail Game of 2012
TechTudo [Brazil] - Best Wii-exclusive game of 2012 (in Portuguese).
Gamespot [UK] - Editor's Choice Best Wii Game of 2011
MMGN - 2011 Best RPG
RPG Fan - Best Sound of 2012, Best RPG of 2012
RPGamer - Best Music, Best Console RPG, Best Story, Best Overall RPG of the Year
Slant Magazine - #1 in Top 25 Best Games of 2012
PixlBit - Game of the Year 2012
The reason why you might find that Shulk supporters want him so bad is because of how great of a game Xenoblade is. It's seen as the game that turned around the JRPG genre. It has great story, astounding music, fun combat, and the best graphics that a wii game can have (this game tried to be hd on a non-hd platform!).

That being said, these are just the least subjective arguments that I can think of at the moment. As I said at the start, sorry if I missed some.

EDIT: (thanks Spazzy_D for reminding me of this)
10) Japanese voice actor of Shulk, Asanuma Shintaro, tweeted that she is hoping she can fill us in with some good news soon with #Xenoblade https://twitter.com/sogorukyo/status/476017276584333313
Google translate does a poor job on this.
:/ Don't get me wrong, I'd love nothing more than to see Shulk in this game. Sorry if i'm being a buzz kill, i'm just stating that i'm not holding my breath for him.
From what I've gathered up, it seems like Sakurai announces at least one new/returning character (or a few, depending on the occasion) every month.
The Terminator Train theory:
E3 2013 (June): Villager, Wii Fit Trainer, Mega Man are announced to join the fray! Some of the newcomers from the past games (Mario, DK, Pit, Link, Samus, Bowser, Kirby, Pikachu) are confirmed as well.
July 2013: Olimar was confirmed to return
August 2013: Luigi was confirmed due to 2013 being The Year of Luigi.
September 2013: Peach was confirmed. Toon Link was also confirmed to return later that month due to Wind Waker being released in Japan.
October 2013: Sonic is announced.
November 2013: Marth is confirmed to return.
December 2013: Rosalina and Luma are announced. Zelda is confirmed later that month due to Zelda: Link Between Worlds being released in Japan.
January 2014: King Dedede is confirmed to return as a celebration of Kirby Triple Deluxe being released in Japan. Lucario is also confirmed to return later that month.
February 2014: Little Mac is confirmed to return. Diddy Kong is also confirmed to celebrate the release of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze being released in EU and NA.
March 2014: No new characters :/
April 2014: Nintendo Direct 4/8 confirmed Greninja, Charizard, Sheik, Yoshi and ZSS.
May 2014: Ike is confirmed to return.
E3 2014 (June): Palutena, Mii Fighters and Pac-Man are announced.
July: Robin, Lucina and Captain Falcon are announced. (Fun fact: Fire Emblem and F-Zero debuted in 1990. This is a probable reason for including Captain Falcon in the trailer).
August: ???
If Sakurai is a fan of anniversary stuff, then Shulk could be announced next month, since Xenoblade was first localized/released in Europe on August 19th, 2011.
If this is true, then...my friends....
WE GET TRUE MONADO TUESDAY :DDDDDDDDDDDDDD
Source: Miiverse
EDIT: Turns out that I was incorrect on the release date there. It's August 19th, not 11th .____. whoops, my bad :/ Edited the post to make sure it's accurate.

Actuallly Shulk's reveal trailer being a "repeat" of another newcomer trailer where he suddenly appears and changes the future is quite brilliant. Definitively would be amazing to see.
I think we all deserve medal for our patience, and high spirits. even after todays curveball we are all still keeping faith. I've never seen a thread keep a positive attitude after something like this ever. you guys are alright ^__^

In fact, if anything, it seems like Matt Mercer wasn't lying when he said he wouldn't be voicing Chrom as a PC in Smash 4. So frankly there were things against Chrom, which there aren't for Shulk.
Actually, being really real here, I don't see why there's literally anything that makes Shulk less likely. It's not like he and Robin share similar styles or even appearances. The hair is similar(ish), but it's not the same color, and hell, Ike and Marth have the same hair color. So do many other characters. They got in.
If hair style is the only reason Shulk's chances are down, I'm just going to sit here and laugh. Even without Gematsu (which I still think may know something about Shulk and/or Rhythm Heaven. Shulk isn't a character Sakurai would've dropped, because unlike Chrom, there's no competition.)
Now I'm not going to say everythings for certain, because if we didn't learn our lesson on #MonadoMonday, we never will. However, I really don't see how after today, Shulk's chances are any less than they already were.
I will say today helped the boss reptiles significantly, however!
