In context, Shulk utilizing the Monado Arts makes more sense then using normal arts. You know, to emphasis how special the Monado is. For example Monado Cyclone, Monado Armour, or Monado Purge.

Also slightly unrelated, but I'd be disappointed if one of Shulk's victory poses does not have him yelling out "The future does not belong to you!".

Agreed. It's like having all these ingredients to make a perfect dish and you make a PB and J.

Mine was always "This is the power of the Monado!"

Not sure why all of his movesets use the arts as the special moves. He does have the Monado Arts too.
Well, I used Monado Cyclone. More to the point, I wanted to have the "Break -> Topple -> Daze" chain, and the only way to do that with just Shulk was to use his non-Monado arts in combination with his Monado ability. Furthermore, I used Shadow Eye because I was discussing how to make new counter moves more interesting in a different thread.

I think it's a clever moveset, and I like the idea. I think some of Shulk's smashes should involve the Monado arts. I'm sure they could be implemented either way.

I was just kidding. Sorry.

BTW, is there a server error? Too many double posts, I see.

Should the Monado do extra damge against ROB, or will that be relegated to the trivia section on Smash wiki?

If you're talking about how PT's pokemon take extra damage from certain types of attacks (like Ivysaur from fire), then no. It unnecessarily unbalances the cast.

True, they forgot to take into account the nearly everybody had a fire attack while grass and water effects were exclusive to Ivysaur and Squirtle. Poor 'saur.

I... didn't realize they did that with the PT's pokemon. Even the slightest amount of consideration would have shown that to be a bad idea. That statement could be applied to a lot of different things in Brawl I guess.

But no, he shouldn't do more damage to ROB. Besides, in the game wasn't it basically that he could damage things that were otherwise invulnerable until they were Toppled? ROB's not invulnerable to damage, he's not one of those enemies.

Doing extra damage to only one character on the entire roster is pretty dumb. It's not a clever mechanic, it's more like picking on the runt of the litter for the hell of it.

Yeah, I wasn't making that suggestion seriously.

One topic though, how long should the Monado be? I know the Energy Blade can get pretty long at certain parts but for balance, I think the energy beam should just be an effect while the physical part of the blade deal the damage.

I don't think making the blade long would necessarily make it unbalanced. I put up a moveset for Shulk earlier (pg. 7) that had his range be his primary advantage, the longest in the hypothetical game in fact, but I also balanced it out (or at least tried to) by giving him overall mediocre attack speed and power.

^ My custom drawn sworded Ganondorf vs Shulk <3
(drawn by a devient artist as a request).

He can't have the full scale of his range from his games. Forget about balance, it would just make his gameplay bizare.
Hopefully not scaled anywhere near as small as this cartoon though!

"Bizarre" play styles aren't exactly a new thing to the series. Besides, isn't unconventionalism a good thing? As long as it doesn't break anything all it can really do is add variety. People who don't like it can just not play as him. The blade might need some minor scaling, but I think it would be best to keep it on the longer side.

How about keeping his energy blade long but have the energy part only deal damage and make enemies flinch, but no knockback?

That's not a terrible idea, but it would really mess up the whole "poker" thing. He'd only half fit the archetype at best if that's how it worked. You got a play style in mind that could consolidate that?

... is there an actual reason to try to fit a specific archetypes? Besides, he'd still fill the role just fine if the enemies still flinch, he just wouldn't be making any kills from long range.

No real need to fit archetypes, but you still need a general play style that allows character oddities like that to work. Also, he'd be required to fight close up in order to rack up damage, then kill from afar assuming the energy blade doesn't have set knockback. He'd essentially be switching styles mid-fight, thus making him only a "half-poker".

I think I would prefer Shulk being like the other swordsmen, but with the arts as the defining characteristic of his moveset.

If, for some crazy reason, Xenoblade had two characters added, who would you like to see be the second one?

I'm personally, a fan of Dunban.

Though I am not necessarily a fan of Shulk, as I have yet to play Xenoblade Chronicles, I would not mind him getting in.

I had mine eye on Xenoblade Chronicles since it was announced, but did not bother to buy it upon release, as I was not totally sure if I would like the game. Now that I have watched some more gameplay videos and a few cutscenes, however, the game has started to grow on me. I might give it a chance and buy it soon.
