The only thing that really made the Forest Temple hard for me was that damn hidden key in the very first room that took me ages to find on my first try.

But yeah the Water Temple from OoT gets my vote.

pfft, look at these scrubs. Water Temple? pah! FOREST TEMPLE? hahaha!!

I probably had the most trouble with Great Bay Temple out of every 3D Zelda game, to be honest. Not sure what it was. Way more troublesome than OoT's water temple imo. I had trouble with 3 of the 4 Majora's Mask's dungeons, which is much more than I can say of any of the other 3D games.

Some others,

Skull Dungeon from LttP. For some reason having all those different entrances to the temple really messed with my head.

Level 5 from LoZ where almost every single room was filled to the brink with these guys

basically made me want to die.

then later on there's a dungeon that's filled with THESE guys as well

and perhaps worst of all isn't technically a dungeon/temple, but going through Death Mountain from Zelda 2 is by far the most painful and torturous Zelda accomplishment I've ever achieved. That is where the difficulty curve of the game goes straight up. If you played it you probably know exactly what I'm talking about.

^yeah, I used a guide to get through the final Zelda II temple, and it was still extremely tough. Shoot, getting to the temple itself was hard.
Playing it straight up seems insane, because there is so many dead ends, and it's by far the largest temple in the game.

I actually didn't have too much trouble with the Final Palace (Death Mountain is much earlier in the game). Getting to the final temple without a game over is tougher than the Palace itself. That's another really tough stretch of gaming though. Getting through Death Mountain the first time, and making the trek to the Great Palace at the end are the two most difficult parts of the game. It was so satisfying to beat that game without any tools.

Man LT, I agree with you 100% on the Great Bay temple. MM in general just seemed crazy difficult to my 13-year-old self.

I would agree on Death Mountain too, but I never actually beat Zelda 2 due to difficulty.

Ahaha! I was going to say Great Bay Temple, but Luigitoilet was already there. Water Temple was difficult enough, but everyone now knows how to get through it (not sure about the Master Quest version yet). Great Bay was definitely a maze and a half, with all the tunnels and various currents you had to travel through. It was mentally exhausting by the end. Stone Tower Temple was also trying for me, though not to the point like Great Bay. The thing that really bummed me about Stone Tower was how
you had to flip the entire dungeon upside down
. Now THAT was a mind screw.

Zelda 2 didn't have any difficult dungeons by design more so than it had difficult enemies to deal with. Those damn unicorn heads flying around, and those ghostly eyeballs made things quite difficult, especially when jumping over gaps.

Zelda 1, I'll agree with
Luigitoilet on that, but also remember how difficult the second quest was, especially with dungeon designs; how in the hell did Nintendo expect us to figure out that some walls with no doors that couldn't be bombed had to be walked through instead? And it's not simply walking through the wall, you had to push against it for almost a second before you heard that famous Zelda chime confirming you had successfully gone through. How cryptic is that? And then trying to find World 8 was a real pain, so much so that I literally had to look at an FAQ to find it, and when I found out where it was, I wanted to just rage at how unlikely and out of the way its location was.

Those were the good ol' days, when Zelda games were actually challenging and combat was difficult. Nowadays, it's like the puzzles are more linear and you have to actually try hard to lose a boss fight.

I reckon the well in MM was a bit hard for me. But that was because I didn't have a lot of what the Gibdos wanted.

So when I went through the original zelda for the first time, I didn't realize how easy it was to take the different dungeons out of sequence. So I beat the first one and then went straight to the 7th.

The one with 29347329847 wizrobes.

With 4 hearts.

Meh. That's probably which one it was then. It's been years and years since I played it and I could easily have the numbers messed up.

The key points really were the 29347329847 wizrobes vs the 4 hearts.

I haven't really decided, but my hardest dungeon is probably from one of the older Zelda games like Zelda 1 or 2. Water Temple was hard the first couple times around but now I'm really good at figuring out dungeons in 3d Zelda games so it's not a problem anymore. Plus, I have played it so much I have basically memorized the Water temple from OOT and MM.

From 2D Zeldas:
Turtle's Rock and Ganon's Tower (before getting the red mail) from A Link to the Past.

From 3D Zeldas:
Spirit Temple from OOT: Master Quest, that hidden eye switch...

Haven't played TP or Skyward throughly so my opinion might as well change later.

The dungeons from the 2d Zelda games are definitely the hardest ones.

Forest Temple was probably the hardest one. It was so confusing in so many ways and also that key in the first room surprised me and took ages.
One of the harder ones was also the Snowpeak Ruins in TP. The puzzle where you have to slide the 3 block so that the middle button is pressed took me literally like a month to do. The second time I played it I was done in 15 seconds though.
Also everything in WW where you had a partner you had to take everywhere. Man I hated those so much.

Jabu Jabu's Belly in Oracle of Ages.

I didn't really mind the water Temple in OoT, and I actually really liked the Great Bay temple in MM, but Jabu in OoA? I always dread that dungeon. My least favorite dungeon ever. =/

Water Temple. The first time I was there, I had a used guide book from my friend and it was missing 4-6 pages from the Water Temple so I got hopelessly lost. But the hardest dungeon for me now is the final temple in Skyward Sword. I hate connecting the rooms.

Man, I hated that SS dungeon so much. That dungeon was one of the hardest dungeons in a 3d Zelda for me I just couldn't figure it out...

I though the last dungeon is SS was pretty easy, aside from the pirate robot miniboss that took me an hour >_>
But yeah all dungeons in SS were so easy you could just run through them like nothing. I barely even had to think what to do.

I'm the opposite, not only did I find the dungeon very hard but I also did not find the robot mini boss hard.

It's been too long for me to remember for certain which dungeon was the most difficult, but in terms of play time it was definitely the Water Temple by a huge margin. And the only reason for that was that "hidden" tunnel behind the chest where you get the hookshot. If you miss that and later can't work out the possible level change by looking at the map... It was ********.

Other than that, I'd say it's pretty much a tie between the Water and Forest Temples, with Great Bay as a solid runner-up. The newer games have been so much easier.

I liked the SS room-moving puzzle; I thought it a nice twist of the old slider puzzle formula to have to navigate around fixed plates, which change depending on what you do. Running through all those rooms to fix a single mistake did get old, though. But hey, it was an actual dungeon challenge in a new Zelda game!

I think the hrdest dungeons were the great stone temple in MM and Sky tower in LA.

Stone temple with all them upside down crap, and Sky tower with the whole destroy certain floors crap. :( not easy for a 8 yr old

I tried to get into one room in particular, but I could never match up the rooms. The side I could get on could only be opened from the other side :c

And I thought that the miniboss was kinda hard, but only because he broke my shield the first time and I didn't feel like leaving and going back in :p

I remember that, matching up that room was difficult. And was why I found the dungeon the most difficult in SS.

Stone Tower Temple in Majora's Mask.

When i was younger, this dungeon was the reason i couldnt beat the game back then. Had no idea how to get the giants mask or get to the boss room

I walked through that damn temple a few times and couldn't even find out where to go and how to get there.

I still maintain that the Water Temple isn't hard, it's just hard for people because they're not used to thinking very spatially when it comes to games. Also there's the constant switching of water levels and if you screw something up it's a long trek to get back and change it to how you need it to be.

Thing is, it's something that just takes patience, it is damn annoying, but I wouldn't call it difficult, well, it's hard on your nerves I'll give you that.

As a kid I remember getting stumped on parts of Turtle Rock and Ganon's Tower in ALttP. I would say Majora's Masks three temples are the hardest temples I can think of from the 3D games. Snowhead was straightforward in some senses and somewhat confusing in others, again some of it partly down to the necessity of thinking a little more spatially, but I dunno it just... wasn't easy/obvious what you need to do. Great Bay Temple is a wonderfully designed temple that actually uses water to fantastic effect. There was a lot of complexity to it with water current based navigation/puzzles, not to mention some of the other stuff. Pretty hard, really gave me a hard time the first time I went through it, then was pretty complacent with its boss... did not end well D:

Stone Tower Temple is hard. Unless you know the puzzles and stuff by heart, I highly doubt you can complete the whole thing in a single 3 day cycle. I suppose you could say that of the other temples, but Stone Tower is especially time consuming, mainly because it is essentially two temples in one, which is pretty cool. Anyway yeah the fact that it didn't restrict the puzzles to a specific form of Link or a specific item made it far more demanding on the player, since they now had to really think using the pool of knowledge they'd gathered from their entire gameplay experience. It was definitely a really fitting final test, and conquering that temple without any form of guidance is something any gamer can be proud of.

Honourable mention goes to Pirates' Fortress (not a temple but whatever) without the Stone Mask. Try it, it's a pretty fun challenge. :p

The Water Temple's difficulty is probably the most exaggerated thing on the internet. It has some sneaky passages, one in particular whose entrance is obscured by a poorly placed camera angle...but if you look at the map it's pretty simple.

They fixed that and other stuff in the 3DS version and now it's pitifully easy. I'm still stuck in the Master Quest version though somehow lol

The Water Temple was one of my favorites in OoT. The Great Bay Temple was perfection. Upon completing it for the first time, I felt like I had just had one of gaming's greatest experiences.

****, Majora's Mask had the best goddamn temples in the whole series, hands down.

@ LT - Hahaha the MQ version of the Water Temple is far easier than vanilla. Good luck!

I love windwaker, but every time I try to replay it I RAGE QUIT at that first friggin dungeon.I think it was called the Forsaken Fortress. Not only do you have to go swordless for 90% of it, but if the guards catch you they send you to a prison cell and you have to RESTART IT! So they implement all the amazing sneaking features included in Windwaker to make you tip toe behind the slow as hell waddling guards, who check their backs every 3 seconds, in every single room, it usually takes hours.

I hated this dungeon too when I was a lot younger also because it was my first Zelda game that I owned so it was hard to figure out.

People found Forsaken Fortress hard?

Sounds like you hadn't played enough Hitman or Spec Ops as kids. :p
