Hardest RPG Boss Battles Ever.

Name who you think are the hardest boss battles in gaming, whether it be from amount of time taken to kill them, the fact that one mistake will lose a fight, or just the insane steps you need to take to beat them.

Rules
  • No low-level challenges (Round 2 Gilgamesh with lowest possible level in FF12, low-level battle vs Rufus in Disk 2 of 7).

Use of "Tricks" will not disqualify a boss (Yojimbo makes every FFX boss one-shottable).

Naming the FF7 Weapons makes you gay.

My nominations:

Boss: Matador.

Game: Shin Megami Tensei 1.

Why?: Simple: Shin Megami Tensei 1 is one of the hardest RPG's ever, and the only way to beat Matador in the solo encounter is by getting incredibly lucky with massive chain-crits, or else he'll just two-turn kill you.

Boss: Penance.

Game: Final Fantasy X International.

Why?: First of all, PAL only boss, you can fight him after killing ALL the Dark Aeons.

The preparation for this boss takes days, getting all characters to 99, all Celestial Weapons, getting Tidus's true Ultimate Overdrive, Finishing Blitzball to maximize Wakka's attacks (Unless you use Auron and have the fight take twice as long). It's ********, not to mention you need to chain the sphere grid with max ? Spheres to be able to get the max stats you need, getting auto-Haste and auto-Phoenix on all your gear, collecting enough Megalixers, etc, etc. The prep is ****ing stupid.

Once you can actually fight the boss, he takes around an hour (At least) of perfect execution to beat. Following perfect patterns so his arms never attack (One arm attack = You die), knowing when to kill them so they'll revive on a turn that you can attack them, and the boss having 15,000,000HP all make for a retardedly long, intricate fight. The hardest boss ever created by Square, no question. One mistake, and you will die to the arms.

(I KNOW IT'S NOT THE RIGHT PICTURE)

Boss: Dark Magus Sisters.

Game: Final Fantasy X International.

Why: The Dark Aeons are a feature unique to the PAL version of FFX. Once you get far enough into the game, you can complete specific challenges to fight "Dark" versions of your summons. The Dark Aeons typically have millions of health (Other than Penance, Anima has the highest by herself), and you will get ***** by them without certain stats and abilities. Auto-Haste, Auto-Phoenix, Triple Overdrive, Damage Break, etc. Not to mention you are required to have all the Celestial Weapons to do **** to them.

Naturally, the Magus Sisters, as the final Aeon, are the hardest (Anima is a ****ing joke, Bahamut is a ***** though). Dark Aeons hit for upwards of 10k on basic attacks (They all have damage break), reaching into multiple 10k's on specials. Dark Magus Sisters have so many ways to instagib your party it's ********. Bad Passado? You're dead. Bad Camisade? Probably dead. Let them get to Delta Attack? Game over, no question. Again, precision and patience are your friends.

Honorable Mention: Angra Mainyu (FFX-2).

Why? If you fight Angra at the right time (Before you can cheese the fight), it takes 4-6 hours. My friend Sean left the game on autoplay with a turbo controller with two Deathknights and an Alchemist on pure DPS / Heal rotation with near complete stat nullification, and came back three hours later to see he was dead. We later found out the boss will randomly solo-flare one party member for a oneshot. It's not hard once you figure it out, but it's INCREDIBLY long, seeing as you get one attack for every three heals and debuff removals.

I'm having trouble beating the Four Fiends in FFIV when you fight them together- Rubicante and that annoying fire spin move.....
I also have trouble beating Agatha's Gengar in Pokemon Leaf Green XD.

ozma is so freicken cool, though i dont think hes the hardest. he was a great idea as a secret boss, but i still find emerald weapon in ff7 harder (i dont care what the rules say, emerald weapon is tough lol, ruby isnt)

I can't really recall that far back, and I don't feel like taking the time to remember. But the most recent "difficult" RPG boss I faced that I can recall is Proto Babil (FFIV DS).

To be quite honest though, he's only hard if you don't know what you're doing. If you have the right equpiment and augments he can be much easier.

Funny, I was going to say that the FF7 weapons are easy.

Boss: Matador.

Game: Shin Megami Tensei 1.
Wait, are you talking about SMT or SMT III (Nocturne)?

Anyways, hardest boss I've ever come upon would have to be some of the secret bosses in Star Ocean 3. Mainly because I'm too lazy to customize weapons and level up characters...

The first Bowser fight in Paper Mario is impossible to win without hacks. You're actually supposed to lose. Does that count?

I never played Partners in Time, but I loved Superstar Saga. Last boss in that game took me hours.

Do MMORPGs count?

I already feel like a nerd for even considering some of the bosses in World of Warcraft...

The Dark Cloud Final Fantasy III DS. Just about every boss in that game was incredibly difficult for me.

The last bosses in Blue Dragon, it took me just about almost an hour to beat the last boss for the first time, and 30 min the second time.

Boss:
Culex.

Game:
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars.

Why:
Never put a Final Fantasy boss in a Mario game.
Tip:
Lazy Shell.

Seriously though, Nemesis from FFX is hard to beat at first, but even if you learn how to beat him it takes a very long time.

I don't have the International Version, so I can't fight the Dark Aeons....

^ That's why I'm so embarrassed. He's not supposed to be hard, but he is for me because I accidentally wasted my bombs and I can't go back and get more.

And @A man: Thanks for the tip, but I don't know how I'm going to get him to his final attack point.

@Sly Fox: Nether did I. Hit him with the drago fang first, then raise your stats, then lay out bashes and his superpowered attack if you are fealling lucky. Heal when you dip below 40.

Final boss fights in M&L:piT. You get no breaks inbetween the 3 fights, and some multi-hit attacks would trip you and you'd get hit by everything else. The final boss could could OHKO your adults. The final boss in Superstar Saga was crazy two. Both bros start with 1 HP, she gets first strike. Honestly, PiT was sadistic.

Another thing... well, I don't play RPG's much, but I thought that Kent C. Koopa in Paper Mario was ludicrous, tied with the final version of the Dojo's Master. I mean, 3 hit combos that do 5 damage each and are nigh impossible to block? Come on.

I found most Mario RPG bosses to be relativly easy. Though the Mario and Luigi saga does have some tough boss fights, especially if you skip out on buying healing items and Bro items.

Kent C. Koopa was a very lucky win on my part. I so needed Ultra quake on that one. Dojo master is easy if you have zap tap, as it stops all combo attacks and deals return damage.

Don't deny that PiT was sadistic. I beat in when I was in the 5th grade when it came out, but that was really only because of my experience with the prequel. The fights in PiT were ridiculous. Elder Shrooboid remains my most hated boss ever. I mean, after you deal 8 bazillion damage, he gets huge and even stronger, and there's that blasted thing that will kill you if you don't kill him in 3 turns. The only reason I beat him is because I spent hours practicing with Copy Flowers.

So true. The battles drew out forever and unless you had an unlimited item badge, surviving the whole battle is hard. Elder shrooboid was tough. I wasted so many Mix flowers and Springboards on him alone.

In the long run, I though Superstar was harder, but that's mainly because I beat it in 3rd grade. That and since I like it better then partners, it naturally was better for me.

Superstar was a lot better, but PiT is still a good game. I also beat SS in the 3rd grade, I remember spending hours on the Queen Bean because I didn't know you could attack her arms. Killed my GBA batteries. Anyway, to this day, Cackletta's Soul is still hard for me.

Same. I just hammered away for about 2 hours at her body.

I played through the game earlier this year. Man, its so hard to think how much I struggled with the bosses the first time around. Chuckola Cola alone took almost a month to beat first time through and now I'm at the point where I can kill bowleta part 1 in two hits.

I think using the lazy shell is borderline cheating, and takes away almost all difficulty of the game. Without the lazy shell, Culex is hard as hell.
