i've noticed in many a pics, that on occasion a charcter's (link, metaknight) sword has been glowing vibrantly, i've been thinking that it might end up meaning something or is it just a flashy light show, i know my opinion, what is your's

Maybe it's a sort of visual confirmation of hitting a sweetspot. They already make different sounds, but some people don't respond as well to sounds as they would to a bright flash at the end of their sword.

In Twilight Princess, Link's sword glowed after it was fused with light (which then allowed it to slash away dark energy) so that could have some relevance, but any gameplay change regarding it is doubtful.

Metaknight's blade glowing is probably just for effect, though.

I think it may be an indication that the actual hitbox is out, which might actually be useful.
Other than that, just superawesomecool SFX.

It's probably just a little fancy effect thrown in to pretty things up a bit. Since swords are shiny, they probably reflect light on certain frames for nothing more than the purpose of looking cool. But isn't that enough?

Seems only visual. Link's sword glows because it croesponds with his new look from the Twilight Princess, in which the light from the sword sliced through darkness.

Metaknight's sword does not glow when it is stationary, nor does Pit's blades. But when they slice they gain a glowing effect (just like Marth in Melee although brighter).

The hit effects and death splashes look fancier and brighter as well.

I can't think of any good gameplay elements to come out of a glowing sword. Therefore, I say special effect.

Though I have to agree with Fawriel in that it seems to show hitbox frames.

Look closely at the Smash trailers.

Links sword glows when he swings it.

It's not a 'glint' or Links Twilight Realm sword. It's just.... glowing - For the hell of it. LOOKS COOL!
