While I understand what your trying to say the sheer amount of people out there I've seen that act like waluigi should be banned from smash forever because of the death threats last year is just sad.
Which is especially dumb because they don't extend it to other characters. Back in Smash 4 some guy in the Rayman thread threatened Artsy Omni's life and Rayman didn't get any flack, but two guys send a threat and a 9/11 meme to Sakurai and suddenly Waluigi is ruined forever...

Then those people never get the character they love, at the cost of a bunch of jerks that whine if the roster has one character they hate (not just dislike) for whatever reason (likely selfishness based on how some people act), even if the people who want the character make up almost half of that yet Sakurai is apparently supposed to never listen to them. Y’all are ignoring other data that already brings this stuff back to positive anyway. Some of the Least Wanted votes likely aren’t even hate, just a personal distaste but they wouldn’t mind for other people.
We're talking about this as if the poll really matters - Smash is, for better or for worse, not a democratic process. If it was, however, this would be the nature of reality. A minority opinion wants something they love and never get it because the majority wouldn't stand for it. We could get into a long discussion about the nature of servicing the desires of the minority in a system where more than one option can win, but that's really off topic.

Off the rail of the discussion of the community poll, something that always weighs on my mind is Geno's spirit. Mostly the fact that I can't for the life of me rationalize its inclusion in ways that aren't next level grasping, or hoping for an "epic gamer moment" where his trailer has that spirit possess a body, and this was all an elaborate setup to make his introduction as kino as possible (which... uh... that's next level grasping.). But, after a little research, I can bring some mote of hope to the argument against his inclusion because his spirit is already in the game, mostly from the underused argument that if he was added, there would be no other spirit to be his fighter spirit. I've seen it counter argued before that he could just use his in game render, but I wanted to check to see if that had precedent, and fortunately, it does:

Obviously, the Mii fighters use their in game render since they don't really exist outside of Smash, but interestingly:
Cloud
Robin
Wii Fit Trainer
and Pokemon Trainer all use their in game renders as well.

Aside from maybe Wii Fit Trainer, all of these characters have official artwork, models, or renders that could easily be used as alternate spirits for them, but they just weren't for some reason. Robin especially interests me because unlike Cloud, he doesn't have an excuse - there is the official in-game default portrait, artwork from a Fire Emblem card game, and late-stage concept art that very clearly shows Robin as represented in Smash.

The only problem with this is that none of these characters have another non-fighter spirit, save for Wii Fit Trainer's many moves, which also happen to use the in-game model, and it's hard to say if that counts.

Just a little theorycrafting, nothing important, nothing that makes me give up on his chances.

Steve is ahead of Sora but I also think it is important to also note that characters like Sora, Steve and Waluigi are in the negatives with more people against their inclusion to being in Smash Bros. I feel like that tidbit of information is important to share in regards to how the community feels about a particular character.
Nah, I don't think the negatives matter at all. Smash fans are notoriously whiny about anything that isn't to their specific tastes and the people you make happy by including a character are worth way, way, way ****ing more than the people you make happy by not including a character. If you don't like a character, don't play them or buy them. It's that easy to ignore them outside of possibly playing against others who like them (in which case, it's just once again that other people like something that you yourself do not).

The Smash fan base also has very standard characters they really dislike such as Steve and Sora because they perceive them as threats to their personally more wanted characters that are frequently more niche (niche isn't a bad thing mind you, it's just more focused and that's how I use it), so of course you'll see an over-representation of dislike for those characters in the same way the core fan base will over-represent certain character depending on how and where it is polled/promoted.

A lot of characters will have their very vocal detractors, but their opinions hardly matter compared to the positivity to be gained from their inclusion. The anger and salt from B-K's detractors when they got in was hugely overwhelmed and buried by the joy, the gratitude, the love, and the celebration that lifted so many hearts around the world for a character duo many believed was 'irrelevant' and 'too niche' for Smash. The same happened with both Ridley and K. Rool. Even in terms of stuff outside of the Smash bubble, this applies. I saw so much love and joy for Rosalina when she got in, for instance, and the positivity over even Piranha Plant overwhelmed the hatred more often than not. Negativity is a powerful thing, but so is its oppressor.

lol There were B-K detractors? Must be the same crowd that hates puppies, steals Halloween candy from grade-schoolers and spams people's discords with porn.

I mean, it's possible to just dislike Banjo & Kazooie genuinely. They certainly do play like the dated N64 games they are, and if you're not keen on collectathons, you're honestly better off not pushing through them. They are in kind of desperate need of a remake, so I don't blame any new players for not understanding what the fuss is all about.

And yes, Banjo & Kazooie were hated by a number of vocal people haha.

i guess so, but i'd like to play as E.Gadd
Lol I love E. Gadd. The elderly need representation as well... jk
I'll be honest, I can't really think of any characters in the lineup that could equate to kooky old scientist, barring the exception of maybe Dr. Mario, but even then, he's just sort of a burlier Mario that has a coat on. I would be very interested in seeing what kind of wacky things someone could do with an E. Gadd moveset if it was based around inventions and chemical flasks and other such things. Lots of explosives and poison damage, perhaps.

I like E. Gadd - if he was in, that'd be pretty darn neat.
It would be nice to see the poltergust be more prominent in a Moveset. Like maybe E Gadd could have a ranged grab too but instead of the plunger he could suck opponents into the poltergust and they would take damage while in there if you pressed the attack button and you could spit them out in different directions depending on where you moved the control stick like a much less powerful version of Luigi's final smash. He could also use various tools in his Moveset and maybe have like an invention failure mechanic where they don't always work properly or have different effects than usual to make him even more interesting. I could see using beakers and vials and whatnot too that'd be great!

Edit: yeah now I'm going to go make an E Gadd Moveset lol
What would an E. Gadd final smash be? I figure we could go two different directions:

1 - Representation of the Luigi's Mansion brand: The Ghost Portrificationizer

E. Gadd swallows up a few careless foes into a big ol' Poltergust, and hurls them onto a conveyor belt that goes all-in with the stamp-stamp, the zappity-zap, and the wash cycle before it spits out a few portraits! ... which summarily explode immediately afterwards, because, why not, Kablooey!

2 - Representation of the Mario & Luigi brand: The Hydrogush 4000

Simple one -- E. Gadd pulls a lever and unleashes a Time Portal a la Partners In Time, and in the past, his younger self prepares the Hydrogush 4000 that promptly blasts an enormous wave of water back into the present, slamming into enemies and sending them flying as if it were a laser beam-type attack.

... I actually kind of hope he gets in, because I want to see these play out, hahah. :ultduckhunt:
None taken. That is a fun move that can only go in 2 directions opposed to 4 correct? I am not opposed to more quirky moves like that. Not to mention grabs and throws in Smash, in general, only have slight variations generally so even a ranged grab is at least something a little different than the standard let me grab you with one hand, punch you with the other, then toss you in a direction of my choosing. That being said, variety and new stuff is important to me when designing movesets so let me try to come up with some alternatives.

Different grab options for E Gadd seem partially already done and would at least be different than grabbing someone with one hand, bonking them on the head with the poltergust when hitting the attack button, and then just throwing them or pushing them away with the poltergust.

Another option would be to have a kind of tether grab where a vortex of air comes out of the poltergust and grabs opponents, then, like in Luigi's Mansion 3, pressing the attack button would slam them into the ground and pressing a directional input would throw them in different directions or slam them into the ground in different ways.

Perhaps the latter is the better option and I suppose it is different than Luigi's plunger. What are your thoughts on these options? Or would you prefer something else entirely? And if so what do you think might work better? Genuinely asking here and not trying to be facetious.

Wow you pretty much nailed the final smash I had in mind with that first one!
I love E. Gadd. Personal bias says I'd be totally cool with that one. I'm excited for Luigi's Mansion 3, but, I don't think the personality of the first game has ever been fully realized again.
Late to the party, but I didn't realize how many people loved E. Gadd

...but none of y'all even tagged me!

Reimu has bizarre levels of support but having spent years on /v/ I'm certain it's a meme
You know, I feel like almost everytime someone who's not into Smash speculation asks why so many people want Geno there is always this one guy who goes "well actually nobody wants Geno, he's a literal who and his fans are just meming" so seeing this kind of take in this thread is pretty damn ironic. Be better than that. I'm not gonna go in depth because this is not the place for Reimu discussion so let's just say the reason her support has increased so much over the last months is because almost all Smash news we got were in her favor which led to many Touhou fans becoming more positive and vocal over her inclusion.
Anyway, been at a convention this weekend (coincidentally cosplaying as a Touhou character :v)) so I'm a little out of the loop. I've seen this pie chart floating around with the alleged Sabi poll results and was wondering if this was legit? Would be super sick to see Geno being the most wanted in the community! I kinda expected his popularity to decline hard after Hero so seing this is a really nice surprise!

I agree that it's possible to have a genuine dislike. I can totally understand why someone would designate them as a "who?", especially someone that's too young to have had the chance to play their games. You want to talk about indifferent? Unimpressed? Irritated? Again, I TOTALLY understand how and why someone might feel that way, however, it doesn't take much research to realize that B-K had significant historical value for both Nintendo and much of the generation that's so invested in Smash. B-K has a fun and unique moveset, and even more importantly, shatters the misconceptions of what Sakurai would deem "relevant". They opened the door for literally ANYONE to get into the game (Including Geno, Steve, Master Chief, Sephiroth, Crash, Sora, etc, etc, etc). To take all of these things into account and still actively spew hatred (more than a passive dislike) just shows a tremendous amount of childishness and egotism as far as I'm concerned. Especially when people get malicious about it by spamming discords and antagonizing fans.

This is huge news. A lot to process here people so let's call it early, go home, and really sit on this one.
I know, right? I'm SO SURPRISED!

... Ahem, sarcasm aside... I'm not surprised that Geno is still as popular as he is. I'd even say the additional DLC announcement kept it from going any bit south. The demand is only going to get stronger until that Mii costume sings, if it ever does.

The people have spoken. Make it happen.
Honestly I feel that Isaac is not on the other 4s level cause they have been requested since 64 and Melee, and more requested at that.

For what it's worth, regardless of likelihood, I think Sackboy would be an amazing addition. I haven't played much of LBP myself, but I enjoy the charm and Sackboy would have plenty of unique properties along with a smaller stature that lends itself well to Smash.

.
I actually really appreciate that, thanks! It’s nice to know other people think that as well, and I’ll still support Sackboy even if I’m the only one!

Isaac just didn't exist back then? He's been requested since Brawl, so basically, the entirety of his existence. Smash didn't exist when the other guys were made, so technically, he's been requested for longer compared to total lifespan :4pacman:

FTFY :p

The wait for November is driving me nuts. I can't even go out and get any cider because I live in a warm state that doesn't have seasons. Hmph. Stupid Direct! Drop already!

lol I guess your right, I just like rounding it down to four instead of 5.
To be perfectly honest K rool didn't really start to pick up steam until after diddy got confirmed for brawl. smash 4 speculation was when he really took the community by storm. Banjo like many once super popular characters like krystal was slowly fading out into nothing but then the infamous phil twitter post and the ballot announcement turned him into the comeback of the century and probably the biggest 3rd party request going into ultimate. Heck even geno had a serious rough patch in smash 4 and ultimate is the first time I really think he's managed to break out into the public view the way the others have, not to mention the sakurai article that still almost seems to good to be real life that I'm sure brought legions of would be fans out of the woodworks to fight the good fight(myself included). Ridley and Issac are the only two with a truly consistent record never faltering and getting bigger and bigger with every speculation cycle, ridley will probably go down as the biggest feat in smash history which at this point could probably only be outdone by something ridiculous like Goku. The big 5 were never some established club of dream fan picks, just the ones that have stood out over the past 2 decades and ended up getting lumped together in the minds of the community by their shared trait of seeming impossible to happen naturally without the backing of fans. If we luck out and they all go through I'm sure there will eventually be a new pantheon of "never-evers" to take their place in the hearts of the next generation of smash fans, BWD seems to fit the bill, possibly waluigi, and maybe shantae will too if her fans stay strong but we'll have to see. Things are pretty crazy right now so it's hard to say who will end up standing the test of time but I'm sure our new champions will establish themselves between the dev cycles for 5 and 6 :)

Yeah, the whole idea of the "Five big characters of speculation" (Ridley, King K. Rool, Geno, Isaac, and Banjo & Kazooie) is kind of a false narrative in how it has been presented. Technically, yes, people supported them all back in the Brawl days, but there's just so much ebb and flow to their actual support and the specific narratives surrounding them.

As others have pointed out King K. Rool didn't become a topic of conversation until Diddy was already in, and he only really became such a notable character during the Smash 4 days as people expected a new DK fighter. The irrelevant idea against King K. Rool didn't come along until after DKC: Returns and Tropical Freeze ditched him and he hadn't shown up for years at the time of Smash 4's release. And even then, it was the absolutely meager amount of DK content in the games that led to King K. Rool only getting further cemented going forward.

Isaac fans existed during the Brawl era, but there were a lot of big names going around at the time and he was sort of still relevant. He didn't show up and his support was fairly standard even going into Smash 4. It was only when people realized that not only was Isaac not playable, but that they had even removed his assist trophy that fan started to really push Isaac as a leading candidate (Dark Dawn had came out during the the right time to be picked for Smash 4, it just sold awfully) of the "never-ever" crowd and that reputation only became more solidified as Golden Sun went further out of the public consciousness.

You would have been basically laughed out of the community for seriously suggesting Banjo & Kazooie until 2015 when Phil Spencer made his comment right after the ballot was announced. He may have been a pipe dream for many at the time, but it wasn't like people were majorly backing him and campaigning for him until he seemed like a possibility.

Geno appeared on polls as far back as "Smash 2" (albeit in very small numbers) and exploded in Brawl as a mainstay of speculation, only to be largely sidelined for most of Smash 4 speculation, only to surge back when Sakurai acknowledged him and admitted that he was interested in including him in Smash.

Only Ridley maintained consistent support from game to game, with a substantial number of people interested in him for Melee, a massive increase in Brawl speculation, and continued peak popularity through Smash 4's life cycle until he was disconfirmed by Sakurai for being "too big" and even that didn't really manage to stop his supporters.

They were a solid 5 "never-ever" type characters for specifically for Ultimate's speculation given their individual circumstances by 2018, but they didn't develop as a consistent and supported body until this specific speculation cycle and saying they were all there is a bit revisionist.

Here’s some food for thought, if you had to rank these 5 by how popular they were before announcement( like number of posts in a thread)The applause when they were announced( Or in Isaacs case the negativity and For Geno his mii costume I guess) and how much people supported them, how would you rank them?

1.Banjo
2.Ridley
3.Geno
4.King K. Rool
5.Isaac

There were three Brawl ATs that got attention after Brawl: Isaac, Little Mac and Saki. All three got sequels fairly soon after Brawl's release. Isaac and Saki's games didn't sell well. Punch Out sold 1.2m units. Little Mac was added in the next game, and both Saki and Isaac were cut completely.

Kind of all over the place metric wise there, but I do think you're mostly on the money with the exception of swapping Geno and King K. Rool's positions. King K. Rool just had a momentum during Smash 4 into Ultimate that you could not stop and he just kept rising as a contender, and his reactions were just really damn great all around. He also is probably just a more known presence than Geno given how long he had been around and kept coming back over the years until his retirement. So, yeah, I'd put Geno at fourth and K. Rool at third.

He cut Saki in Ultimate though, which still strikes me as a really weird and unnecessary decision. With Isaac coming back, I figured Sin & Punishment at least deserved to keep their assist trophy...

Yeah, but I think it's normal all 5 characters had a different support evolution, with their highs and their lows. Even if each of these characters had a different progression in terms of support and popularity, which is normal, I think is safe to consider them top 5 if we speak of fan favourites.

Is natural to lose some momentum and support if the director of the game says that your character is too big and impossible as a character, or if your assist trophy (which is your main candidate to represent the series) absolutely disappears from one game to the other. But the important thing is to keep the support for the character even if the chances are unlikely.

Yeah The Metric stuff didn’t come out right at all lol, I probably should’ve just said “by popularity” or something to make it simpler.

Yeah this was pretty much what I was meaning to imply in my original post, The 5 became the 5 not because their some special group but just from managing to hang in for many years and still be big contenders by the start of ultimate. Frankly I'd really call them the 4 excluding banjo because until ballot season began they were practically at 0 and like eric mentioned the idea of them was largely not taken seriously by most people. It's honestly a bit revisionist but they fit the spirit of the idea behind the "5" concept so they stuck.

Yeah the metric here is kinda weird and I'm not sure how you would gauge it, but if we were to look at popularity going into ultimate's announcement I would say something like
1. King K Rool
2. Banjo/Issac
4. Ridley
5. Geno

with ridley and geno flipping and banjo taking the lead over Isaac if were talking worldwide Because ridley and Isaac are definitely tilted by western demand ESPECIALLY Ridley.

right now I'd say geno is notably ahead of Isaac but it's really hard to say for sure since the current speculation climate is very much tilted towards 3rd parties and Isaac has been fighting against his trophy status for almost a year now.

2.Ridley
3.Geno
4.King K. Rool
5.Isaac
1 - King K.Rool
Very popular. The most hype reveal until Banjo was announced. Very solid and dedicated support over the years.
2 - Ridley
A popular pick. A solid 8.8 on the hype scale. Great support, though a good bit of that was no doubt from the sheer meme value.
3 - Banjo
Good popularity, but often seen as a true NEVEREVER. Easily the most hype reveal.
4 - Geno
~1450 posts is nothing to sneeze at, certainly much stronger than during Brawl and Smash 4. Mii Costume was a big suprise, and is certainly one of the major catalysts for his support this time around. Support is definitely there.
5 - Isaac
Decently popular. The only character who just about everyone agrees was done dirty in Smash Ultimate. Support has been there, but is often too quiet compared to the other four camps.

Hi guys, I know I'm brand new to this board, but I need help with a task.

Recently, I easily have gotten in contact with a company called YouTooz. They specialize in making figurines of YouTubers as well as some characters. They have asked me that if I get 69k retweets on my tweet, they will go ahead and make a figurine of our boy Geno. If we can get this to happen, we can possibly see another licensed toy/merch of Geno.

If this seems fishy, the proof is in the replies of said tweet. Please help me as well as some, if not most, Geno fans' out.

As much as I'd love this, something about this isn't quite settling well on me. Would they even be able to make a Geno figure without Square being an issue? Would they even let them license him? I dunno. I'd RT, but, uh... I can't help but raise an eyebrow over this.

It's worth a shot really. I know you might be concerned, but we need to give it a chance. I'm banking on this to come true, they can't just look past this if we hit the milestone, they'll certainly try.

Will this toy come with with real elbow and finger guns and the ability to knock your average Mario unconscious with a "well-aimed" rocket punch? Also, not on twitter, but if I were I suppose I would give this a shot. Don't ask me to get on there tho...just...just no. Sorry Geno there are some things I will not do even for you, my love.

If Square doesn't care about the character, then they won't stop them. If Geno is in Smash, and Square DOES care about the character, then they won't stop them.

If it's just one figurine, it's highly unlikely Nintendo will give a ****. People straight-up make Geno dolls on Deviantart and Etsy and no one says anything.
