So, I'm entering the tourney Saturday having not tried Brawl, and only scratched the surface of researching it, and I'm trying to decide who to pick...

I'm a Fox main in Melee. I'm pretty good, it takes a tourney-level player to beat me, but I can't win most tourneys because I'm just not into advanced moves. For example, I only use shine for reflecting projectiles, so Fox's lack of waveshine or whatever in Brawl means nothing to me. Just good ol' fashioned well-timed fighting...

I'm actually currently leaning towards DK. Considering the rules, he's tough and heavy and packs a wallop, seems a good choice for not dying and getting that 1-min kill. He's far from my main in melee, but he seems so buffed for Brawl...however, the possibility of a DK vs Ike match instills the FEAR in me...

Advice my fellow smashers? It is much appreciated...

I would suggest whoever you are best with, so go with Fox. Not many people are skilled with Brawl, so be someone you are already familiar with (in fact, you have an upper hand not knowing some techniques, since you won't be slipping and trying to use them in Brawl).

You could try and play with a new character, but I wouldn't really suggest it if you already have a good main in Melee. You'll just be too unfamiliar with them. The only ones who will have experience with the Brawl characters are importers or friends of such people, so expect many Fox and such players.

Sadly Luigi, the character I am best at, is locked from the start. So I'm gonna have to go with Kirby or try my luck with King Triple D.

And according to the manager of my Gamestop, perhaps because they are in a mall or because we have two gaming colleges and ASU right here, they are only accepting people who pre-ordered into the store for the tournament and launch apparently. I'm not positive on the details regarding this, as I asked to sign up early today and he said my pre-order was my ticket it. This will really suck if my roommate can't get in, cause he wants to compete and Brawl, but didn't pre-order as I am getting Brawl myself.

I hope my gamestop isn't doing that pre-order thing. Then again, there are about three in my area so at least one should allow registration without a pre-order.

I was planning on picking Pit for the tournament because I want him to be one of my mains for Brawl, but I just don't see him having enough kill moves for a 1 minute match. He can rack up damage but doesn't seem to have many moves that send the foe flying.

So does everyone suggest using a character main from Melee? In that case, I'd be going with Kirby or ICs. ICs should be a nice choice, being hard hitters.

I fear we will be seeing a lot of Ikes on that day...

Pit can also survive quite well, so it is unlikely you will be killed during that minute either. Though I have no idea how well he'll play in the Sudden Death environment if it comes to that.

I was thinking of being Kirby since he is my main (even if I am not the best at him) or Mario (since he is close to Luigi and the lack of being without traction will get me killed less).

Man, I really want to use Lucas but using him will be a big risk since he's unfamilair. So I think I might just go with Zelda/sheik.

But yes, will will see TO MANY Ike's in the tournament. So, I'm goin to go watch videos on how to beat them.

Yes, at this point it seems an Ike counter-strategy is a must...

Tips anyone?

I'll probably use Ike because of the rules of the tournament, but I'm from Canada and my rules for EB Games says we just random or something so if thats true. It will suck.

That is definitely a good question. What are some good ways to dispose of Ike? I would imagine range would have some advantage over him, but I've never played.

From the short time I've logged with Ike all his airs (except bair) are REALLY slow. If you can bait someone into chasing you into the air and time your dodges well you should be able to punish any whiffed fairs/nairs/dairs. They hurt though, and have decent range, so account for that and be on guard if you're coming at him from behind, his bair is a lot quicker than his other aerials.

Except for his jab combo, Ike is pretty slow in general, but he has some serious range with his usmash and fsmash. His tilts are on the slow side as well. I would say that, right now, he seems to be better at punishing whiffs, mistakes and repetition. Good defensive timing and mixing things up will give you a big advantage against him.

Oh, and don't eff with Eruption if you don't have a projectile. Let Ike throw his tantrum.

I will probably be playing Pikachu for this, as Luigi will be locked and Pika's been my little brother's main since 64. I've been destroyed by his attacks so many times I know them all by heart :p

Just remember that if they're using the in-game tourney mode, you CAN'T switch characters in between matches. I'm gonna try and get towards the back so I can see who everyone else picks.

You can call the main Gamestop headquarters on them for breaking tournament regulations.

I have to say: play it safe. Don't do something risky. FOR EXAMPLE: At the SF tournament, I got to the second round. It was tied up. I used Pikachu's upB to get to the ledge (just one scoot straight there, as if i was using fox illusion) and the metaknight i was playing against got in an edgegaurd before i could get there, and i lost. I should of done too scoots! TOO SCOOTS!

To be honest i think there will be a far number of Ikes but most of these people going to these tournements (at least for people in my area) will all be people who have never heard of smashboards. So Im guessing not alot of people will be picking IKE and they will be picking who they mained in brawl. . . Most casuals i know main LINK, Kirby, or Samus

I just called my Gamestop.
Lo and behold, starting roster and wii-mote/numchuck.

Anyone have suggestions for a character that would be easy to use with the wii-mote?
I've read through about 15 pages of this thread, but 73 is more than I can take.

Lucas is a better choice than Sheik. Sheik got nerfed and Lucas is very good. Is b up can't be intercepted, the b up's trip around you takes up very little space, and the recovery is just as good as ness's b up in the n64.

Pit's Arrows say different.

A shot from Pit's arrow will stop Lucas' PK Thunder and send him to his doom. I would assume there are other projectiles that have that property as well -- Needles, Waddle Dees and Fireballs would be semi-easy to connect with.

To be honest if your used to sheik in melee i would go with her in braw. Yes she is nerfed but she still functions the same. I know she may be hard to KO with but if I were you I would go with shiek dude, its the right move trust me!

Are they going to allow custom control configurations with the wiimote + nunchuck controllers? If not, what are the standard controls for the wiimote + nunchuck?

And I heard somewhere that you won't get to change your character from the first round in the subsequent rounds. Is this true?

I doubt that you will have time to alter your control configuration, as it is going to be a Brawl fresh from the case and there will likely be a lot of people at each tournament.

And the tournament will be done in Brawl's built in tournament mode, so you will not be able to swap characters. There is nothing stated in the rules about between rounds, though...

The gamestop guy at my town's store said that there will be melee preliminaries until 12; too lazy to go through all of the pages, but is this true?

ill get my opponent to the edge slash them off with marth then use down air real quick to easily k.o. them!!!
Two things you'll want to know:

First, in Brawl, due to the lessened hitstun, Marth's dair spike is less effective. Don't expect it to KO as easily as it did in Melee unless your foe is unskilled.

Second, most reports indicate the tournament will use the starting roster only, so you may not even have the option to use Marth. You might want to consider who you'll use in that case.

@ballad: Hold it in your hands and you should be able to pretty much figure it out.

A: Attack, B: Special, C: Jump, Z: Shield

Thanks Basmothel for pointing out since it's in tourney mode you can't change characters...

Does anyone know what happens (or if you even have the option) if you choose random in tournament mode?

If it works the same as Melee...

You pick a number of competitors (for this example, we will go with 12). All twelve slots are filled out with random character, random colored computers. Then you go in and switch the computers to humans as needed, give them names, and change the characters and colors. So if you'd want to be random, you'd just leave whatever it started you off with.

Though there is a random character slot in Brawl, so I am not certain how that works, especially in tournament mode, but I am certain it would pick something your first match and leave you with it the entire tournament.

Where are the C and Z buttons located? Sorry for asking, but I do not have a Wii and will not get one until the night of the tournament. Thanks!
