Here is a short pre-development video of the new Virtua Fighter project which was shown during CES.
This might sound a little controversial, but I really like how busy the environment is. It's something that never really occurred to me as being a good fit for a fighting game (you typically want the characters to be the forefront of the action, so a busy background detracts from them), but I think with the footage shown here, it actually helps lend to a way more cinematic feel - almost akin to something you'd see in a martial arts film. (Obviously a large part of that would be because of
VF's focus on fluidity and a more grounded feel overall, but still.) Plus... gosh, the counterattack's visual flair almost reminds me of the ink-like theming that
Street Fighter 4 had, but the understated look fits this really well - it doesn't feel overdone.
If the final game ends up looking like this, it seems like it'll really be something special. I can't really speak much to
VF's gameplay, so I'm not 100% certain if that element of things bodes well, but in terms of appearance... it looks fascinating. Seems like a big breath of fresh air among the current fighting game landscape, too.
