I type barlw because I think it accurately reflects my lack of respect for the game. It is like the game's competitive value of so little consequence, typing the name is also pointless.

As far as the community dying, I think you underestimate how unhappy most barlw players are with the actual game. I frequently hear people say they are only still playing because of the community, and every Smash 4 thread I've seen has been filled with comments like "I'm so excited for Smash 4! Brawl was a fun game, but golly-gee-willickers was it frustrating and dumb sometimes."

It was NOTHING like that when barlw was about to be released. Everyone was very much hoping for an outright Melee 2.0. Everywhere you looked, people were going "OMG I hope all they do is just add more characters and maybe buff a few of the low tiers!"

yeah we'll have brawlruses complaining that smash 4 took out IC's infinites and snake no longer has ******** hitboxes so they'll start an underground movement to mod Smash 4 named "Project B"
This made me laugh. I feel that this joke deserves to be archived.

Also, you make some good points, Bones.

Ya pretty much, I mean for a year Brawl was something to try out when it came out. I gave it a chance for one year and then slowly noticed just how it didn't bring me the same satisfaction as Melee. It's all in the design even little things like the sound when you hit someone or the combo ability, the % racking up, victory poses.. etc. etc. After one year, Melee vs Brawl was out of the question, imo.

I won't lie, I decided the game was garbage as soon as I saw that first demo at E3 that I think Gimpyfish posted a video of. He was like "Uhhh, yeah, everyone is REALLY floaty... they took out wavedsashing... you can't L-cancel anymore... you randomly trip every once in a while... but MAN is Bowser is AMAZING!"

Yep, I played it competitive during the times of CoT 4 and before.. maybe a bit after but not much. Oh well, I'm happy with the result of the video, I lolled pretty hard too. lol.

That video is a real eye opener.

also I didn't play barlw until January 2009 when I discovered a venue. I tried sonic first because he is fast generally and I wanted to do some wavelands. Then I air dodge.....?!!
"Well then, he flips in the air and can still use a command afterwards."

#Revived Melee in my region after Genesis 1 and became their savior.

LOL smash 64 is a great game.

Some people would considerate it better the melee (not me) because their is no lag. The 0-death combos are amazing and it requires a lot of patience before approaching.

No love for smash 64.
Glad I'm not the only one that got caught up on that. Smash 64 is still pretty legit and I love going back every so often to it.

Also Kage I don't know how you got a year out of Brawl, I tried to adapt to and enjoy Brawl for like 4 maybe 5 months and when I went back to melee and looked back I was like wow why did I waste even that much time with it? I can only imagine how you felt with it after a year lol.

Made a slightly long read on why I thought this video's arguments weren't that good. Then I saw Kal essentially already wrote it... So i'll just say I agree.

As a former barlw victim, Kage knows first hand and all too well what kinds of terrors players can go through when they play barlw. That's why he's qualified to help others pull themselves up out of their circumstances and transcend towards Melee. Tragically, despite all of the efforts from the Melee community, hundreds of young men every day continue to be victimized by barlw and all of the conditions listed at the end of the video. We must keep fighting the good fight to keep our kids off barlw. A wonderful new breakthrough that's been developed for such a cause is known as Project: M. It's what professionals refer to as a "gateway game" because of how it's designed to ease the transition from comboless campfests into comboful chaos.

Bones, I would like to (sincerely) thank you for spelling it with the "w" at the end. The joke Tobias Xelkythe told me (on GameFAQs) was that the spelling "Barlw" reflected how the game makes him feel. I like to think he came up with it, but that might be presumptuous.

I think it's a good introduction to the whole topic of smash being a fighter or not for someone who isn't familiar to it. Then again, people watching Fighterpedia are probably already familiar with it.

I still think arguments over whether smash is a fighter or not are silly :bee:

That's why we said, we have a team of experts with modded wiis ready at your disposal. It was a subtle attempt to make people aware of P:M. =P I've read some comments and I'm surprised some didn't caught on with that. For example: "Through the whole video, how can they not mention P:M!?" But we did...

I think it is dumb that they've made it a requirment that the game has to be competitive to qualify as a fighter. The rest wasn't really that bad. So I mostly just think they screwed up in the end of the video.

It's kinda like that comment on the video saying "if smash is a fighting game then mariokart is a racer" as if mariokart isn't a racing game... Seriously.

Edit: And yes it is a silly argument.

Say what? Where did you hear that in the video? They said there's a good reason why a big community is born because of the love of one game. We are all the ones that play the game how we want it and that's why the game survived for so long. There are no set rules it's just how we want it to play and that's perfectly fine.

Exactly. They talked all about no set rules and some fighting game breaking any rules you could come up with. Then in the end they defend the game as a competitive game, implying that this is a requirment for it to be deemed a fighting game.

The comment wasn't in the video, it was one of the replies that people voted up lol.

I just meant that the comment was on the video page.

Alot/all of the pros also points towards the whole "the game has to be competitive to be a fighting game" thing anyway.

Where are these fans coming from? O_o You should be wary, as most of my posts are not very respectful.

Stelzig, I agree. It's complete nonsense that people think "competitiveness" (which, in reality, is just an empty phrase used to describe games according to what they like) is a criterion for placing a game in a certain genre. Mario Kart is still a racing game, Mario Baseball is still a sports game, and Smash is still a fighting game, regardless of whether you consider these games "competitive."

I've personally always preferred "Bawrl"since the game was made just to make people who actually like the series baw over how terrible it was.

Also because of Casual players' tendency to baw and claim "cheap" on things like Ike or Pikachu.

Also because of the tendency to cry "ban" on things without fully understanding them.

As if the Melee community doesn't do the exact same thing? C.f. Wobbling and stage list.

As far as I'm concerned, scrubbiness is scrubbiness. Doesn't matter at what aspect of the game it is directed. You don't get bonus points for only being scrubby about stages.
