Famitsu's reviews always come a week earlier than a game's release date, so, next week we'll have Brawl review.

What do you think? Famitsu is surely the most important videogame magazine in Japan, I expect a score betweem 38/40 and 40/40. After all, Nintendogs got 40/40, so why not Brawl?

Also it's possible to see some new screenshots, but I don't expect spoilers.

I don't want character spoilers.
This makes me sad. I'm gonna have to be off the internet for a long time...

Famitsu gave Melee a 37/40. Just knowing what we do about Brawl now, with all its new features, characters, expansions, and changes, I think we can easily expect a score higher than that. 39 or 40/40 seems perfectly possible to me. Certainly I don't see any possible way it could go below Melee's score even in a worst-case scenario, and I sure wouldn't complain even if it got that (do the math real quick and you'll note 37/40 is about a 9.25/10 in the typical US grading scale).

Just so you guys know, it's rated in 40 because there's 4 people who rate it out of 10.

So if it's 36/40, it's basically 9,9,9,9.

Edit: Also, be aware that the Japanese look for different things in games than we do. It's a different culture, a different taste. For example, first-person shooters aren't very popular in Japan. Oh, and nobody likes the Xbox over there (360 is better, but they still aren't too fond of it).

Brawl will not receive a perfect score from Famitsu, and i would be mad if it does =/ it doesn't really change it's gameplay from melee a lot. It's like making Halo 3 game of the year, when its gameplay it's the same as Halo 2.

I predict a 36/40 or more.

I'd like to know how Famitsu, or any other game reviewer for that matter, can objectively review a game in such a short time, especially smash, which is known for its amazing replay value and advanced mechanics that aren't even discovered until months or even years later.

i totally agree, brawl doesnt deserve a 40/40 score from Famitsu, because it isnt perfect. it has flaws, they may be very minor, but it does have flaws, and although those flaws are completely based on personal opinions, it can be said that from anyones perspective, brawl isnt 100% perfect

knowing what we know, i think 36 or 37 is a realistic rating

Personal opinion is often bias, and it's a reviewers job to look past that. Melee probably got a few points off because of it's 1player. If Brawl has great substance, they'll rate it accordingly, even if they don't like all the characters.

You think that Nintendogs is a perfect game?

The Japanese these days have been far more attracted to casual-oriented games. That's why Mario and Sonic at the Olympics, Mario Party, Wii Sports, Wii Play, Wii Fit, and other such titles do so well over there. Brawl looks to do what the other Smash games have done: blend together casual and hardcore aspects to create an experience that nearly anyone can enjoy. The game doesn't have to get a perfect score to be justified, but seeing it score high would be nice. There's no reason for the Smash series to start dying off just because of Japan's potentially-questionable reception of the game, score and sales-wise.

As far as Famitsu's score, I'd say between 36 and 38.

Yup! =D Nintendogs is an amazing game, the graphics are great, the interaction with the dogs is perfect, and also is innovating the whole idea of the "virtual pet". Of course i don't play Nintendogs  not my type of game, but i can't deny that is amazing.

For the Japanese? Yes
As opposed to Smash Bros Brawl? Guys, if Nintendogs gets a 40/40, then Brawl deserves a 80/40. Twilight Princess deserves a 60/40. Mario Galaxy deserves a 70/40. Catch my drift? Nintendogs getting a higher score than Brawl is blasphemy. I think that even Miyamoto and Iwata would think "WTF?" if Brawl gets lower ratings than Nintendogs.

Just my two cents. Some weird dog game is not better than a game that was developed by one of the largest teams in video game history.

I guess I should move to Japan then since I have a similar taste in games as they do. I hate most shooters.

I think you mean if Brawl gets lower ratings than Melee, but I get the point. It really wouldn't make much sense, but the fact is it will probably be reviewed by different people.

Also, I thought Sakurai wrote a column for Famitsu... bias, maybe?

It'll get a 30/40

They'll find little things wrong with the game and will blow it out of proportion. Then they will say that Brawl isn't that good of the game. Also, they will overhype the game way too much in their minds. (equviant to thinking that the game is equal to God) only to be disappointed that it isn't a 'godly' game in the literal sense. And I'm only SLIGHTLY exaggrating too.

And if Famitsu isn't the one to act this way, I know some other reviewing magazine and/or website will.

I expect somewhere between 38-40. I could see points being taken off because it doesn't utilize the Wiimote very much although its on the Wii.

Famitsu doesn't seem nearly as harsh as they used to... I remember when I was in high school I'd look up scores and go "WHAAAA?" but as of late they seem to have softened.

Anyway, is this the final nail in the coffin of all of this delay BS or what?

It's not a perfect game. We already know this because of the lame online mode. It doesn't deserve a perfect score.
You have no idea what it deserves. No one does yet. And in my own opinion the online mode is in no way lacking, it brings a huge new aspect to the game, innovating in ways that no online game ever has before ( CPU jumping in) it does the best with what it has available to it. What more do you want?

Not to start an argument or anything, but where does it say that Famitsu always reviews stuff a week before release? I know I'm probably just ignorant about this, but that's why I'm asking :).

Famitsu hasn't said when their review for the game will be going live.

I'm sure they (and other JPN gaming companies) have the game already and are playing it. Since Nintendo/Sakurai doesn't want to spoil everything before launch, I'm sure they're not allowed to release any information on the game until a certain date (probably 3 days before launch or something).

I've been searching a bunch of sites (japanese) looking for some preview or something and there's absolutely nothing. It's rather strange for a game like Smash. They probably have it already with an NDA

But isn't Famitsu a monthly magazine? They might just push off the review to next month's magazine, well after Brawl's launch. Not confirmed, so the title's a little misleading.
