aha actually this is the swordsman glitch or whatever. basically, if you hit someone's shield with certain B moves that affect your momentum, falcon kick included, the 'spike' flag is set to on until you touch ground again. He didn't get hit by anything until that next falcon punch, so that's what spiked him.

This is easiest to see by doing the same thing on brinstar. Shield and have your friend falcon kick through you away from the platform. He'll hit the lava and get spiked over and over.

Are you sure he just wasn't punching with his nips? That would expain the spiking.

Falcon kick hit his foe's shield and Falcon left the stage, thus setting his random spike flag. So any subsequent hits to CF until he lands on the ground or grabs a ledge will all be random spikes. Thus, the falcon punch spiked.

In the swordsman spike video, I mention in the description we couldn't get it to work with Falcon Kick, but that was only because the platforms were so narrow and the first part of Falcon Kick wouldn't do it, but per the video in this thread, clearly the latter part of Falcon Kick can do it (just hit your foe's shield in such a way that you leave the ground without jumping).

can you believe that my first local tourney i went to, i went to grand finals set 2 after losing first set with pika, switched to falcon, had counterpick for game 5 set 2, FoD... i was controlling entire match, final stock no damage vs opponent over 100 and he gets a fsmash off, upon recovery i am fsmashed again but this time instead of knocking me upward and to the left it acts as a spike. how remarkably ridiculous... of all the times for something like that to happen. i was at like 20something damage. i have never seen that happen again. this happen in late 06 or 07 likely

thanks phanna!

On the same topic, explain this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BVTec5JNSKg Skip to 2:07. Luigi was standing on the ground when hit by Kirby's Bair, yet this happened. I just can't wrap my head around this glitch.
...

This is the exact thing we're talking about in this thread:

1. Luigi hit's Kirby's shield with an attack on the ground
2. Luigi leaves the ground before his attack is finished
3. Luigi now has a random spike flag on, so Kirby's bair makes his trajectory weird. And if he touches the lava, he is CERTAIN to the laval glitch spike death.

Well, it was previously said that only /certain B moves/ would cause the glitch. Hence my confusion.
Oh. That person was mistaken, probably my fault for not being clear in my video description. B moves are the only way you can do this to yourself, IE special moves are the only moves that let you hit someone's shield while you leave the ground without jumping. But ANY attack that hits an enemy's shield can cause a random spike, if you get knocked off the ground while you are performing the attack. This distinction actually never occurred to me this clearly until you asked the question, so thanks :)

edit:

So we've already seen the "acid glitch" video which shows how to create a random spike with special moves. Here's two more that might help anyone wrap their mind around it:
