So is Doc actually slower than Mario in terms of attack speed? In Melee, only a few of his moves such as the Jab combo were actually slower while the other moves had the same start-up and end lag.

Only his Jab combo is slightly slower than Mario's in this game. Really, Doc is only slower in movement compared to Mario.

Yeah, doc's attack speeds are essentially identical. Its his movement that suffers. His moves generally pack more kill power though.

I feel like I'm the only one who's not bothered by his movement speed. Granted it's the reason people think low of him, but I think he has plenty more besides that to make up for, such as his inability to get pressured and amongst some of the best OoS options in the game. Then again, I'm just overly optimistic. lol

Actually, that would've been cool if they made it like that for Doc though it would probably result in Doc having good air attacks balanced by terrible lag like Snake in Brawl.

Try playing Melee Doc, and you'll be amazed at how fast he used to be :V

He has fast attacks though, so I think that makes up for his below average run speed. It's only really noticeable when you're trying to punish somebody that's running away.

Yeah, indeed try playing against Wario with Doc, not a fun matchup at all. :(
And yeah, I realize Doc has the same movement speed as Mario in Melee, but to be fair, I do appreciate that they actually made an effort to make noticeable differences between the two, rather than being extremely subtle. I'd go on record to say that Melee Doc was probably the laziest clone ever made in the series.

Dark Pit. Melee Doc had numerous differences in his tilts, and his lag on his aerials. I think Dark Pit is the laziest clone but does he even count?

I don't think Doc counts anymore since he has the old Melee moveset and more altered attributes. If anything he could be a semi-clone if he didn't share animations with Mario.

While I originally started out with Mario, and I enjoyed playing as him, the second I started playing as Doc, I instantly LOVED him. He has almost every tool that I've wanted out of Mario's gameplay since he got changed in Brawl, save for his forward-air lacking a meteor spike. I'm aware he's slower than Mario, but he's fast enough for my taste, and everything in Doc's moveset more than makes up for it in my opinion. The return of Mario's Melee down-air and the legit Mario Tornado, plus a Shin Shoryuken-like Up-B? Automatic new main :D

Cool story time for my bros.

Used to play Mario and spacies way back in Melee, played Brawl like four times in my life. Got Smash 4 about four or so days ago.

Faced a tough Sheik in For Glory, he had solid fundamentals, knows of dash dancing (just for the flashiness in its neutered Smash 4 state) and fox trots and whatnot, etc.

No matter how close I got, I just couldn't clinch the game with any of my mains. Not Fox, not Puff, not Rosalina. He switches to others like Duck Hunt Dog and G&W, whom I can actually best.

Then he goes Mario. I beat his Mario, and an idea pops in my head: I'll try out Mario myself. I'd love to try a Mario ditto.

He picked Sheik. ****, this is literally my 2nd time touching Mario in Sm4sh.

I beat him, rather soundly with a Fair meteor and a Fsmash for the two stocks. I'm a bit sad, but the 200 or so games I've put in Puff, Fox, and Rosa are eclipsed by my Mario.

After I finally defeat his Sheik in the hour or so that we played, we just kept doing Mario dittos, which were rather even. I eventually decide I'd try out Doc, never liked him much in Melee though.

Wow. Incredible. His KO prowess is just.... completely out of place in Sm4sh. And both the Mario's have an incredible Usmash, it's almost back to Mario's N64 Usmash glory. I wasn't even aware of Doc's UpB and DownB being legit attack options, but Mario and the Doc just felt... natural to me. I think I found two new characters to add to my "main" lineup.

How to Play Dr. Mario

1. Shield
2. OOS UpB when the opponent attacks
3. Opponent is frustrated because of your godly reaction skils taking away 13 percent each time they approach

AKA The way to piss off people. It's worked a couple times against people on FG, especially Mario and Doc dittos!

Probably the best 4v4 ever.

Honestly I'll use it as a segue to say that I believe Doc is strong in Doubles. I really do think that with a partner that covers his weak spot he is of great use (his D-Throw is pretty favorable for team combos)

Also, the amount of people needing medical attention
has dropped significantly with the decline of space
animal related incidents.
Also, since Meta Knight was nerfed, theres nobody needing help. That and the fact that nobody wants to have a guy who hurts more people in Smash than he ever cured in Dr. Mario operating on them.

Not gonna lie the first match was hype.
That commentary though. Too much doctor puns.

Still, I thought it was funny that the first couple of seconds into that match all you could hear was HOO HOO! HOO HOO! I did like that Throw into USmash.

I think I'm gonna really sit down and learn Doc as a secondary. I feel there's some things about him that may make him more preferable to Mario in some match-ups.

Beyond Up-B OOS being amazing, what else does the good doc have that I should keep in mind?

Solid strings that rack up damage provided you utilize them right, a few handy combos, a Utilt that begins to true combo a bit earlier than Mario's thanks to increased damage.

Learn how to use Doc Tornado to break and intercept attacks + abuse its priority. I need to do this more.

Use his Mario-tier startup frames to your advantage. Learn to zone and space with pills to try and control SOME of the pace. If you're knocked off, Tornado and THEN double jump, or DJ into Tornado. NEVER lose your double jump on-stage and get hit, overcommitting is more of a death sentence than ever with this character.

USmash reads are strong, use FSmash liberally and remember it has an arm sweetspot that makes it easier to aim than Mario's. Use Doc's ludicrous Bair as a form of pressure if you want, he has a lower SH and it works better for it than Mario's in that regard.

Know that your D-Throw is arguably more versatile at multiple percent ranges and never be afraid to D-Throw a heavy ever thanks to its significant bounce and setup. Abuse Uair's Autocancel off a shorthop (even when fastfalled you get no lag).

ALSO keep in mind Dr. Mario's aerials have a few frames more landing lag than Mario's barring Dair which has like 6 or 7 more landing lag frames. You can also ledgesnap with Side-B and reflect projectiles at the same time thanks to the hitbox so if you want to ledgestall or hide with it it is actually legitimate. I believe Doc's Sheet has a larger vertical hitbox like in Melee so this works rather favorably (at least the in-game tips say it does!) Oh and NEVER use Side-B when recovering unless you're close to the ledge already and want to intercept your opponent's gimp attempt or mixup your recovery. Only do it when you can snap to ledge reliably during recovery.

This is all general advice but I think it will help. Think of him as a slower, slightly harder hitting Mario with more niche MUs but IMO 20 times as fun to play. Also, welcome to my home, the Doc boards.

I think Doc has better matchups towards characters that have to respect his megavitamins due to it having more angles than Mario's fireball and strong aerial attacks, like against Link. On the other hand despite having quick attacks in the air, Mario is better at weaving in and out during aerial approaches due to his air speed giving him an edge against characters that can avoid fireballs/pills anyway since Mario can combo his air strings better than Doc can. Also, Mario is way more safe than Doc offstage due to FLUDD and better jumps, though the angle that Mario's fireballs fall at is sharper than Megavitamins.

Okay so here are a few notes I'm taking from my experience with Doc so far.

Doc has sexy kill moves (Up-B is love. Up-B is life.), this means for racking up damage, Doc can liberally use his strong hits, particularly Up-Smash and B-air. U-Tilt > U-air > U-Smash seems to be a decent chain against heavies. U-Smash's angling also sets him up for stronger positioning.

D-air is really good at intercepting rolls and has a long-lasting hitbox below Doc (which is something Mario would love), Fastfalling D-air is good as a mixup when recovering from being launched upwards.

Doc's sheet has on-stage application since it can intercept attacks.

Doc Tornado should be used ASAP when launched so you can be as high as possible when recovering. Fastfall if you feel it's too dangerous to land on the stage and go for the ledge. I also need to work on my mashing skills. I think you have to mash 16 times for max height? Also, Doc's options are extremely limited when recovering obviously.

Doc is super fun, and he seems to have more technical application than Mario. He may have more strengths than Luigi too since his defense is much more solid than Luigi.

Reading this, I realize Doc has three solid options
for breaking juggles, in contrast to Mario.

You've got the reverse sex kick Nair when somewhat
close to the ground, a Dair with OK reach below with decent reward,
and the high priority tornado that is fairly generous with timing.

I'm glad you're enjoying Doc, I don't know how good he is overall outside of low IMO (He just seems below average even if he's super fun) but IDK, maybe he's better than most give him credit for and it's just early on!

Either way he's a good secondary for Mario in cases where he's a better choice here and there.

Thanks to Doc's pills, I can't see him as a low tier character. He has obvious weaknesses (though now that I play him I find his recovery problem to be overstated), and his mobility sucks, but he's extremely powerful.

His biggest problem is it's very difficult for him to regain control once he loses it. Mario has the same issue but it's that much more polarizing with Doc.

That said, I have a feeling that Doc has a better MU with Luigi. Possibly can go toe-to-toe with Sheik too.

Sheik is still a tough matchup due to her Bouncing Fish offstage which can be very problematic, more so for Doc. Doc can kind of challenge Luigi in air attacks and zoning, while with Mario I just go aggro against an airborne Luigi hoping that something hits :/

I think his biggest problem especially against fast characters is his inability to punish faraway. Mario can catch up to people running away, but the only realistic option Doc has is throwing a pill.

IDK, I flip-flop on him a lot but the general consensus is that he's not that great, but I'm all for changing that or growing past it! Also IDK about Sheik, offstage is booty and Sheik generally pushes her opponents there.

I know for sure he's better vs. Luigi than Mario is, that much is obvious. Either way I'd love to see more of him as he's definitely under-repped and his potential isn't really explored despite the attempts of myself and others to promote experimentation with him!

Also I hope you enjoy him enough to not want to play Mario a whole ton afterwards because while I PROBABLY SHOULD play Mario given I defend him and say he's a good character, I just have way more fun with the Doctor. It's something about him, I guess. EITHER WAY, he's a good secondary IMO.

It may just be player skill, but fighting Megaman with Doc is a lot harder than fighting with Mario. With Mario, I can easily avoid his projectiles and add pressure of my own with fireballs, and weave back and forth. Doc is a lot more committed to... everything. And then there's Rosalina...

I'll need to figure out how Doc can combat characters who can space him. The lack of mobility really, really hurts.

Doc vs. Rosalina is honestly fascinating. She has to be careful of those big multi-hit moves that send things far away and have good priority. Meaning, yes, Doc Nado is REALLY helpful in this MU. Use big sweeping moves that Doc has to scare Rosalina and make her hold her Luma dearly. A lot of the tricks Mario has vs. her work here too in the case of throws, i.e Doc's B-Throw.

Megaman is a fun one that I can't give too much depth to but I can say that you're going to want to cape everything that isn't lemons and force him to want to close the gap with megavitamins. Lemons are the only projectile Megaman can throw at Doc that is impossible for Doc to really do much about. Just wait for him to commit and punish him for it.

Ah, a Dr Mario social.

As much as I don't really care much for clones, I'm glad the old Doctor's back in. I just loved using him in melee, and I use him more often than Mario in fact.

Side effects I've noticed while playing as Dr Mario included laughter and fun, but that's just about it.

Just gonna drop something in here maybe for experimentation, but has anyone tried edgeguarding with Nair by throwing it out near the ledge, like, ledgedrop, Nair, to prevent people from snapping thanks to Nair being a reverse sex kick making the timing actually easy? I've theorized it working but does it seem applicable for the hungry people who wanna ledgesnap?

(I have a GIF coming out today that will blow the minds of many, probably my best moment online period with this character)
