As a person siding Dr. Mario, I'd figure I'd drop this here.

Only his Jab combo is slightly slower than Mario's in this game. Really, Doc is only slower in movement compared to Mario. So is Doc actually slower than Mario in terms of attack speed? In Melee, only a few of his moves such as the Jab combo were actually slower while the other moves had the same start-up and end lag.
Try playing Melee Doc, and you'll be amazed at how fast he used to be :VI feel like I'm the only one who's not bothered by his movement speed. Granted it's the reason people think low of him, but I think he has plenty more besides that to make up for, such as his inability to get pressured and amongst some of the best OoS options in the game. Then again, I'm just overly optimistic. lol
Yeah, indeed try playing against Wario with Doc, not a fun matchup at all.Actually, that would've been cool if they made it like that for Doc though it would probably result in Doc having good air attacks balanced by terrible lag like Snake in Brawl.

He has fast attacks though, so I think that makes up for his below average run speed. It's only really noticeable when you're trying to punish somebody that's running away.
Dark Pit. Melee Doc had numerous differences in his tilts, and his lag on his aerials. I think Dark Pit is the laziest clone but does he even count?Yeah, indeed try playing against Wario with Doc, not a fun matchup at all.
And yeah, I realize Doc has the same movement speed as Mario in Melee, but to be fair, I do appreciate that they actually made an effort to make noticeable differences between the two, rather than being extremely subtle. I'd go on record to say that Melee Doc was probably the laziest clone ever made in the series.
How to Play Dr. MarioCool story time for my bros.
Used to play Mario and spacies way back in Melee, played Brawl like four times in my life. Got Smash 4 about four or so days ago.
Faced a tough Sheik in For Glory, he had solid fundamentals, knows of dash dancing (just for the flashiness in its neutered Smash 4 state) and fox trots and whatnot, etc.
No matter how close I got, I just couldn't clinch the game with any of my mains. Not Fox, not Puff, not Rosalina. He switches to others like Duck Hunt Dog and G&W, whom I can actually best.
Then he goes Mario. I beat his Mario, and an idea pops in my head: I'll try out Mario myself. I'd love to try a Mario ditto.
He picked Sheik. ****, this is literally my 2nd time touching Mario in Sm4sh.
I beat him, rather soundly with a Fair meteor and a Fsmash for the two stocks. I'm a bit sad, but the 200 or so games I've put in Puff, Fox, and Rosa are eclipsed by my Mario.
After I finally defeat his Sheik in the hour or so that we played, we just kept doing Mario dittos, which were rather even. I eventually decide I'd try out Doc, never liked him much in Melee though.
Wow. Incredible. His KO prowess is just.... completely out of place in Sm4sh. And both the Mario's have an incredible Usmash, it's almost back to Mario's N64 Usmash glory. I wasn't even aware of Doc's UpB and DownB being legit attack options, but Mario and the Doc just felt... natural to me. I think I found two new characters to add to my "main" lineup.
Doctor Mario in a nutshell.Welcome to the Doc board! We have hidden knowledge and little tricks, but not alot of people know them because we're always underrepresented ;_;
Also, the amount of people needing medical attentionYeah, everyone's jumping on them new-age unlicensed home remedies nowadays.
Also, since Meta Knight was nerfed, theres nobody needing help. That and the fact that nobody wants to have a guy who hurts more people in Smash than he ever cured in Dr. Mario operating on them. Also, the amount of people needing medical attention
has dropped significantly with the decline of space
animal related incidents.
That commentary though. Too much doctor puns.
Not gonna lie the first match was hype.
Solid strings that rack up damage provided you utilize them right, a few handy combos, a Utilt that begins to true combo a bit earlier than Mario's thanks to increased damage.I think I'm gonna really sit down and learn Doc as a secondary. I feel there's some things about him that may make him more preferable to Mario in some match-ups.
Beyond Up-B OOS being amazing, what else does the good doc have that I should keep in mind?
Reading this, I realize Doc has three solid optionsOkay so here are a few notes I'm taking from my experience with Doc so far.
Doc has sexy kill moves (Up-B is love. Up-B is life.), this means for racking up damage, Doc can liberally use his strong hits, particularly Up-Smash and B-air. U-Tilt > U-air > U-Smash seems to be a decent chain against heavies. U-Smash's angling also sets him up for stronger positioning.
D-air is really good at intercepting rolls and has a long-lasting hitbox below Doc (which is something Mario would love), Fastfalling D-air is good as a mixup when recovering from being launched upwards.
Doc's sheet has on-stage application since it can intercept attacks.
Doc Tornado should be used ASAP when launched so you can be as high as possible when recovering. Fastfall if you feel it's too dangerous to land on the stage and go for the ledge. I also need to work on my mashing skills. I think you have to mash 16 times for max height? Also, Doc's options are extremely limited when recovering obviously.
Doc is super fun, and he seems to have more technical application than Mario. He may have more strengths than Luigi too since his defense is much more solid than Luigi.
IDK, I flip-flop on him a lot but the general consensus is that he's not that great, but I'm all for changing that or growing past it! Also IDK about Sheik, offstage is booty and Sheik generally pushes her opponents there. Thanks to Doc's pills, I can't see him as a low tier character. He has obvious weaknesses (though now that I play him I find his recovery problem to be overstated), and his mobility sucks, but he's extremely powerful.
His biggest problem is it's very difficult for him to regain control once he loses it. Mario has the same issue but it's that much more polarizing with Doc.
That said, I have a feeling that Doc has a better MU with Luigi. Possibly can go toe-to-toe with Sheik too.
Doc vs. Rosalina is honestly fascinating. She has to be careful of those big multi-hit moves that send things far away and have good priority. Meaning, yes, Doc Nado is REALLY helpful in this MU. Use big sweeping moves that Doc has to scare Rosalina and make her hold her Luma dearly. A lot of the tricks Mario has vs. her work here too in the case of throws, i.e Doc's B-Throw.It may just be player skill, but fighting Megaman with Doc is a lot harder than fighting with Mario. With Mario, I can easily avoid his projectiles and add pressure of my own with fireballs, and weave back and forth. Doc is a lot more committed to... everything. And then there's Rosalina...
I'll need to figure out how Doc can combat characters who can space him. The lack of mobility really, really hurts.
