I thought this was funny:

Characters were chosen based on their individuality, saying they must stand out in the game. They had to consider developments costs and the time needed to include someone in the roster.

So Sakurai, three space furries with blasters, reflectors, scouters, and landmasters are more unique than a Pokemon with an unique moveset and solely psychic attacks?

What a joke.

Well, Sakurai's entire speech is over, and he did not mention DLC. I won't share my thoughts on Sakurai since they seem to spark the ire of many forum posters here, however, I feel the Smash series will continue to go away from its multiplayer roots if Sakurai is the director for Smash 4. I also expect at least six Landmasters and space furries in the next one.
I expect an exclusive SSBB, which is: SSBB: The Land Master edition. Guess what. Every character is... not a Land Master, but, sadly all of their final smashes are Land Masters.

I'm a bit disappointed by the lack of new info too, but I'm trying not to hold it against Nintendo -- after all, they at least let loose some info on WiiWare.

Though if I had to make predictions about Smash future...
[/engage forsight mode]

I suspect that it will get picked up by a different director since Sakurai really isn't part of Nintendo any more. Of course, that will also mean that the Smash series will be handled either very poorly, or take the series in a very different direction.
[/ending forsight mode]

I disengaged forsight mode to avoid the issue of characters. We really don't know what will happen in the course of 6 or so years. By that time, StarFox could come out with a game that makes the whole series completely untouchable...
[/rebooting Starfox Adventures. Please wait...]

Oh ... wait... nevermind

That probably answers your question :p It's just easier all around to make 3 space furries than make 3 completely different characters.

....though yea I don't understand the removal of Mewtwo either :/

Really, that was exactly my feeling. The single player is what took away from a larger roster, which, I am GLAD there is a single player, but at the same time, i can't help but feel that the roster was ignored. (2 landmasters was cool... but 3!!!!!!!! WOLF DOSN"T EVEN HAVE ONE!!!)

I think the next brawl will have a good single player to, but the roster will contain more fan faves. However, for this to happen i think Sakurai will have to go...

This is such a major slap in the face, a spit in the eye...

It makes me so mad they won't do it. They have a chance to expand the best game they are making, and they won't do it. Morons.

And you people are okay with this, and you'll insult everyone who disagrees. Way to be frontrunner flamers.

The way I'm starting to see it now is this:
[/engage hypothetical mode]

Have Brawl as is, play free with friends over the internet, and only pay the flat rate of $50 to do so? or,

Have Brawl with continuous content, constant tweaks to gameplay and character balance, but have to pay the $50 plus a monthly fee to enjoy the online experience?

Given the choice, I'd rather have the former over the later. But of course that is my opinion.

oh well can you imagine how unbalanced the game would eventually get? or you'd go to your friends house to play and he doesn't have internet so he didn't download you main. jeez bad idea from the start
The same thing could easily happen with unlockable characters. Say you went to a friends house and they didn't have mewtwo unlocked? Are you guys gonna sit there and play the required number of versus matchs/hours to get him? Or would bring over your system/memory/get over it?
