This is still the worst take in this fanbase that somehow seems to be brought up all the time.

People who pulled for Ridley for decades didn’t all of a sudden forget he was in the game. People who pulled for K. Rool and Banjo neither. Hell, I was rooting for all 3 and Simon and Snake through thick and thin and I’ll tell you that every time I jump on the game I play my first game with Snake. It’s become a ritual at this point and every time I see Banjo, K. Rool, Ridley, and Simon I smile.
As an addendum: What happens in the months and years after sometimes plays a major role and indeed shapes how characters are remembered. This not only includes people thinking :foxmelee: and "HIYAA!" when hearing about Fox or :metaknight: and "BEHOLD MY POWER!" - incidentally cementing Meta Knight's reputation as a badass. :pichumelee: is a good example of this too, since it was generally considered a joke no matter the skill level... until :ultpichu: returned with a vengeance in Ultimate.

Or how Falcon's so heavily associated with catchphrases and the series in general.

It's kinda why I highlight players that are characters' flagbearers: they contribute to a character's legacy, even if it's not always large. But they push the characters and continue to place a spotlight on them, indirectly influencing not just other players but also developers and even characters. Sure, even if players like the "20GX" Melee trio (S2J / Wizzrobe / n0ne) or Fatality - the most well known Ultimate Falcon - are not the primary reason Falcon has the image of a hype machine with catchphrases, they've helped to reinforce that.

I know that when the Byleth retrospective comes around I'm gonna mention MKLeo kinda by neccessity. And he started using Byleth not just because the character clicked with how he plays - but also since he really enjoyed 3H. In a way, it illustrates how people connect with characters, and how characters impact people.

Alright, just a small question for funsies: how would you react if this were your final Smash character?
I'd be really interested - I have never had a clue who Red Arcueid actually is (only know her from my time spent tinkering with MUGEN).

So I gotta ask anyone who knows: who is this character and why is she so hardcore that it looks like she could punch through a series of brick walls?

To the point Sakurai considered it neccessary to nerf Pichu.

She's from Tsukihime, it's a visual novel by Type-Moon, the people behind the Fate franchise. It's older than Fate iirc and was one of their first series. She's a vampire.

whilst popularity did come into this wave and played a part, it wasn’t the main factor. Every mii wave so far has had a theme. It’s just that some of the more popular Characters fitted into this mii theme over others.

Ah yes the themes that aren't stated from the developers and must be stretched in order to fit.
Very clear patterns that aren't at all arbitrary in any way.

Do we really expect people who got their characters in to come into the thread and say “LOOK BANJO IS IN SMASH!!” Everyday? No. Why would you. You’re satisfied with your character and that’s it.

I always link back to this post whenever this is said:
It's always odd how that point is brought up at the expense of characters like Ridley, Banjo and K. Rool when really that's just par the course with Smash Discussion. We don't talk extensively about other wanted characters like Diddy, Mega Man, Sonic, Palutena, or King Dedede anymore either, nor do we talk about characters like Sephiroth or Joker as much despite being mind blowing at the time. The reason why is simple: Those characters are now in the game and the discussion related to that is not going to be needed for them anymore. People aren't speculating on how they'd play, what their designs will be, and what their movesets are because those are now existent parts of those characters and you can go pick up and just play them, which is what most of their fans are doing. Expecting the discord around those characters to be the exact same as they were before they were including is ignoring why that discord exist and what the fans of those characters are probably doing with them at this point.

For me personally I may not talk about characters like Ridley, K. Rool, or Ritcher all the time, but that doesn't mean I don't love them and that I'm not playing them. Whenever I go back to Ultimate I always play those characters because I love them and enjoy having them on the roster. My feelings on them did not change because the chase is over, I reached the goal and I'm enjoying the reward that came with it.

Mii Wave Themes:
  • Wave 1: Sega (Persona + Sonic the Hedgehog)
  • Wave 2: Dragon Quest
  • Wave 3: Random (There aren't really any parallels between a protagonist, co-protagonist, side character, mook, and Sans)
  • Wave 4: SNK fighting games
  • Wave 5: Random (There aren't any connections between Assassin's Creed, Mega Man, and Cuphead)
  • Wave 6: Random (There aren't any connections between ARMS, Tekken, Splatoon, and Fallout)
  • Wave 7: Random (There aren't any connections between a Minecraft Pig and Travis, and that's just the obvious ones)
  • Wave 8: SquareEnix
  • Wave 9: Capcom
  • Wave 10: Random (There aren't any connections between these characters other than that they're protagonists.)
Themes I've seen proposed:
  • Wave 3 is all teammates: It works for Zero, and kind of works for the Team Rocket Grunts, but it's a stretch for Goemon and Sans since their teammates aren't here, and doesn't work at all for Proto Man because he doesn't often team up with Mega Man, often choosing to stay in the sidelines unless he's needed that very moment.
  • Wave 10 is all half bloods: Lloyd is not half anything from what I understand; he's just a normal human.

Wave 4 had the Virtua Fighter costumes which is Sega. So it is not all SNK fighting game costumes.

Wave 10 was technically popular characters, but yes for the most part the waves are half related, half unrelated (and if we take it further, then wave 9 is unrelated to the fighter, though it is justified due to releases around that time)

Long story short, Red Arc is Arcueid Brunestud, protagonist of Tsukimine, if she gave in to her bloodlust.

So yeah, it's intentional that she looks so hardcore because it's a form of Arcueid that doesn't hold back.

Pretty much that, but just to go a little deep into spoiler territory:

Arcueid is a very ancient vampire created by a species called the True Ancestors, who hunts down human vampires called the Dead Apostles. Essentially, she's the Saber of Tsukihime, an overpowered love interest.

But, to point out Red Arcueid:
She is kind of a what if scenario of what would happen if Arcueid fully gave into her bloodlust and stopped caring about anyone. Basically a Berserk.

Does this mean Smash at this year's EVO is gonna be played in a McDonalds parking lot?
No, the parking lot is probably occupied already by the JoJo Heritage for the Future people, and they're only there because the Melty Blood community had made reservations for the McDonalds bathroom already. We'll be playing by the dumpster in the back instead.

Hey, at least we got it better than the Sailor Moon people. They got the walk-in freezer.

Just because it's not an active topic of discussion, doesn't mean people don't like things.

I'm not talking about cookie dough ice cream 24/7 but I still love cookie dough ice cream.

The hype, shock, and wonder about these character's inclusions may have faded, but the happiness won't. It will never fade.

I really hate how a large portion of the fanbase is addicted to reveals more than the game itself.

I'm sorry but this is reaching farther than Melee Marth's grab range. You can find arbitrary ways to link almost anything. Worlds filled with hostile creatures? Doesn't that apply to any video game that has enemies?

I can't wait 'till speculation is over.

Well, it certainly doesn't help that the trailers have more polish than the actual gameplay or netcode, but that's a low-hanging fruit :4pacman:

Maybe if Nintendo actually bothered to do more than just make the crossover crazier, there wouldn't be such an addiction towards the reveals. But why make a good game when a clunky double-buffer mess of a game with an absolutely garbage netcode is enough to give them 20+ million copies?

Okay, so I know Ninjara was added because Min Min was the new character, but the first character in this wave ruins your pattern because Ninjara is a student in Ninja College, not a business owner. And I know Vault Boy is a corporate mascot, but he doesn't OWN a business himself.

Frankly I'm not even sure if Callie or Marie own businesses or are just employed, so the only character this 100% fits for is Heihachi lol

Whilst they could be stretched to have themes, they are very likely just coincidences in the long run. Not only could they actually try a lot harder to make them make more sense thematically but, it's another arbitrary theory started by PapaGenos lol. Nuff said. People just need to remember to have a mind of their own and not just echo what someone says just cos they're a big name lol. Even with this in mind, PapaGenos doesn't even believe this theory IIRC, but he was definitely the one who started it. No shade to PapaGenos or anything, but it is clear that people are just mimicking everything he says, even when it can be debunked with a tiny bit of common sense applied

The stream setup would use the McDonald's wi-fi, so it'd be as laggy as Ultimate's netcode :4pacman:

Even better, Ultimate's netcode + McDonalds wi-fi.

No one is ready for the guaranteed Warlock Punch. :4pacman:

Or even more cursed, Fortnite's* Amogus mode (also, Fortnite hardcommited to becoming Brand Deals: The Game):

*(Not meant as an indictment to Fortnite itself, but I dislike that move in particular.)

Total sidenote: I don't think I've ever posted about the 3D billboard in Chengdu, but I'm doing this now partly to highlight that whenever Smash 6 comes chanches are decent it'll be advertised in a similar way:

There was a problem fetching the tweet

It's funny how many arbitrary theories started from stuff Genos doesn't believe in, yet talked about anyway.

And this is why having an opinion literally doesn't matter, folks. :4pacman:

Min Min- Ninjara does not own his own buisness (he's just a ninja college student), and I'm pretty sure Vault Boy is canonically fictional so he can't own anything either.

Pyra/Mythra-That's like...everyone though. I think it would be fairer to say that the theme is Capcom or even just Capcom IPs with new releases.

Kazuya-Lloyd is not a half blood. I think the fact that they're all popular characters is a more apt comparison.

Byleth-I'm not entirely certain about MegaMan.EXE, but Mega Man X and Cuphead are neither imposters, nor currently sealed.

Banjo & Kazooie-Proto Man is not Mega Man's partner, and is often in the background until the moment he's needed. He does help Mega Man out, but he's more akin to a rival character than a partner character narritively. (Even when he's playable it's always in an AU where Mega Man does nothing) Ironically, Bass has been more of a partner to Mega Man than Proto Man due to the Mega Man & Bass games.

EDIT: Yes, there is more than one Mega Man & Bass game. It's that one Japanese only game that's on the everyone's favorite console: The Wonderswan.

TBH this theory is kind of the definition of arbitrary. Steve didn't even have a parallel. IMO its just clear that people are mindlessly catching on to things that wouldn't have been given the ToD otherwise. I can appreciate the smash content PG pumps out, but when you are literally covering purple theory and it's just because you want to "document smash speculation" even with barely anything to document for what was something that ultimately lasted a fraction of a day, then it's clear to see that it's just padding. It's more detrimental to the community in the long run, as you start having people going rabid saying Arle is a lock cos Daisy appeared in a random photo but mans gotta pay his bills I guess.

Huh. I thought it was Shiki since they showed him off first (I think. I at least saw him first) and his design screams "I am your generic self-insert anime protagonist".
Tbh, all the designs are basic like that.

I know you were already at 70 tracks, and I'm not even sure how well they would fit the environment, but I was a little sad to not see any Billy Hatcher tbh, mostly because I'm super nostalgic for tracks like Bossa Nova of Briny Air and Tumbling Xylophone (plus i just generally like tracks like Bang! Bang! Big Horns Explosion) lol
Full disclosure, I am not exactly the biggest Billy Hatcher fan in the world for reasons that I'd take a million years to fully explain, so it mainly comes down to me finding just about every track I added to the list to be a more interesting addition than anything from Billy Hatcher
To condense the length of a million years into a couple points based on what I know:
  • Speed Weed likes Sega and digs deep into their library
  • Most people don't dig quite as deep
  • Speed Weed feels miffed that numerous characters are ignored, with the only Sega characters usually brought up being another Sonic character, whoever becomes the hot stuff in speculation (Yakuza, Sakura Wars, Puyo Puyo, and recently Phantasy Star), whoever shows up a lot in crossovers (NiGHTS, Billy Hatcher), and recently Super Monkey Ball because it just decided to become the big crossover thing lately
  • Speed Weed views Billy as being emblematic of the surface-level Sega spec that irritates him a lot, since he showed up in a few crossovers and gets a disproportionate amount of focus despite starring in a single game that wasn't that big for Sega in the grand scheme of things
At least, that's what I've gathered based on the convos I've seen and been part of. Anyways, while we're discussing overlooked Sega characters Vyse seems like a cool dude from what little I've read of Skies of Arcadia and my music teacher recommended the game once so that gives a pretty good mental image. If I may, what can Vyse do and does he have any unique mechanics that could be translated to Smash?

Oh right, he exists.
Given his design I should have expected this response. lol

Tbh, all the designs are basic like that.
People keep saying this, but I don't see it. There are quite a few characters in fairly generic or not particularly eye catching outfits, but I don't see why people say all of the designs are basic.

Shiki though, he has basically all the traits that are typical in a self-insert anime protagonist: Dark hair, dark eyes, kind of a stick figure...That's why I said what I did.

Lloyd's birth father is an angel, so unless angel genes work differently in Tales he most likely actually is an angel.
Ah OK. I wasn't able to find anything that listed him as anything other than human.

Allllllrighty then - so here's that tracklist I mentioned a few hours ago.

As I had mentioned, sometime ago, I did a tracklist for Opa-Opa that had a "general SEGA" theme going for it - but it only pulled from IP that debuted either in the arcades or in consoles before Sonic did. But today, I present to you a second version of this concept. And this time, I'm going unhinged. This time, all of SEGA is on the table. This whole shebang is about to come to an end, so I thought I'd do one last Cool Thing for y'all.

So to better accomodate the much wider variety of IP on the table, I set a rule for myself - when it came to the non-Fantasy Zone tracks, I could only include one track per IP. The one exception to this is Phantasy Star, cause I really did feel like it was that important to have both classic PS and PSO represented.

So then I was planning on making it a nice 50 tracks. Y'know, same number as Terry's! But you see, here's the thing:

I have zero self-control.

So as I realized I couldn't fit all the tracks I wanted in, I started stretching the track amount, until it reached a total of 70 ****ing tracks.

So any semblance of realism this whole idea might have still had has now been completely and utterly shattered. This has become less of a fan Challenger Pack tracklist and more of an exercise in shilling SEGA music. I have clearly gone way too overboard, but you know what? ** it. Making a 70-track list of SEGA music keeping it to mostly 1 track per IP besides Fantasy Zone and Phantasy Star is an achievement in itself. This ** is gonna end up on my resume. This is my goddamn magnum opus. And as such, despite the fact that I'll still stick around after all this is over, I'm still treating this as a "parting gift" of sorts. And if the crazy amount of tracks wasn't enough, I also wrote some notes on why I included said tracks.

So without further ado, here is digital proof that I have officially lost my mind:

NOTES:
-yes i know outride a crisis is the more iconic track from super hang-on but sprinter is my favorite ok let me add at least one bias pick
-I honestly have no idea why I didn't add any Thunder Blade music to my original tracklist. My brain keeps allowing Thunder Blade erasure and I feel bad about that
-A Night in Otorii might be a weird pick, but I think Blind Spot's vocal remix of the track is a great example of how you could turn this pretty nice but short tune into an absolute groove
-After Burner's in kind of an interesting situation here cause its main theme....is already in Smash. Now I could just add another version of it, but I don't know how I feel about that. Honestly I'd just make it so that you could also play That Track Specifically in Opa-Opa's stage, meanwhile we get to add another track from the series to this list. And while I did consider Final Take-Off, which I believe to probably be the second most iconic track in the original game, I decided to go for what I felt was the more fun alternative - Earth Frame G from G-LOC, the series' spinoff. I feel this track is one of the more underappreciated bangers from this era of SEGA music, and it helps that it also kinda serves to represent the R360 cabinet, which I personally see as one of SEGA's more iconic arcade endeavors simply because of how ridiculous it is.
-I picked The Sky Leading Towards the Future to represent SEGA's wide repertoire of football games. While games like Virtua Striker and Football Manager are certainly much more well-known than Victory Goal, frankly this track just slaps.
-I avoided adding any Atlus stuff cause I feel that's kinda Joker's ballpark at this point and I wanted to give the spotlight to other SEGA things
So there we go! This is the peak of my presence on this board, I have nothing else to do, I shall now retreat to the mountains and live out the rest of my life as a hermit.
