Clone talk makes my head spin. Can't we just enjoy the characters for who they are?

I mean, yeah, Dark Pit is mostly interchangeable with Pit, but he has a cool victory theme so there's that.
Being a clone isn't the only reason he's hated, he comes from a small series, and is a character created by Sakurai, and his appearence is just a black color swap of Pit. Ganon may have been a Falcon clone, but at least he wasn't a black color swap of Falcon named Dark Falcon on top of being a clone. I'm fine with Lucina, Dr. Mario should have looked like this,
, and Dark Pit should have been an alt. -My opinion.

TBH though, if theirs one clone people can be justified in complaining about, it's Dark Pit.

Tier 5 (Can't even be called a Clone, only has 1 move similar to another character)

:4myfriends::4lucario:[/spoiler]
What move does Ike have that Marth has? counter? does that mean that shulk is also a marth clone? or is it just because he's from the same series?

Docplays a lot differently than Mario now that Mario had some changes to his moveset in Brawl and that Doc is a more powerful yet slower version of Mario. Lucina's lack of tipper and her sword being powerful across her blade makes her different than Marth even if she's really cloney (is that even a word lol). Dark Pit doesn't really have anything going for him really other than having a different neutral B and some other very small differences that you would hardly ever see while playing. Every clone in Smash history felt different than their originators to some degree and yet DP is the only one that's almost literally the same as his originator. Honestly, Alph could have been done a lot better as a clone character with his rock Pikmin moveset and he would still be pretty different to Olimar than DP is to Pit.

Also, here's how I would rank all of the Smash clones in terms of how unique they are from their originators.

Tier 0 (Full Clone, might as well be an alt)

:4darkpit:

Tier 1 (Almost a Full Clone)

:4lucina::pichumelee::younglinkmelee::falcomelee::drmario::luigi64:

Tier 2 (Almost a Semi-Clone)

:4drmario::roymelee::ganondorfmelee:

Tier 3 (Semi-Clone)

:4feroy::4falco::4ganondorf::4tlink::jigglypuff64:

Tier 4 (Quasi-Clone)

:4lucas::4luigi::wolf:

Tier 5 (Can't even be called a Clone, only has 1 move similar to another character)

:4myfriends::4lucario:

Luigi is a straight up original character. Him and clone ain't even in the same vein for him anymore. He only shares two specials (Neutral and Up+B and one has different abilities) and minute normals (Bair, DSmash and Nair)

Putting him with Lucas and Wolf is an insult to Luigi to where the tern Luigification exist, where he comes from a full clone to a straight original character. Especially considering he has his flutter jump now

Here's the situation

Variation (rarely no difference ever)
:4darkpit:

Clone
:luigi64::drmario::falcomelee::ganondorfmelee::pichumelee::roymelee::younglinkmelee:

Evil Ryu/Devil Jin Syndrome (Almost the same character but much more aggressive and powerful than the normal character)
:4drmario:

Semi-Clone
:4tlink::4feroy::4falco::4ganondorf:

Quasi-Clone

We are on page 100 of a second thread and we are STILL complaining about clones.

Shows how much we have matured as a community :p

He doesn't even need to make up some excuse for it either. Pittoo's using the Silver Bow while Pit's using the Palutena's Bow.
The two weapons have different melee properties in Uprising, Sakurai's own game. Why do they have just about the same exact properties in Smash, then?
I didn't know Palutena's Bow and Silver Bow had different properties in Uprising, I just read some things about them and Palutena's Bow is a bit stronger and Silver Bow has more homing, it's literally the opposite in Smash... this makes no sense.

My point exactly, oni.

My point exactly.
Did somebody say Oni?

People overly worried about clones don't tend to play a lot of other fighting games, I find. The number of variations on Ryu's moveset in SFIV (Oni, Ryu, Evil Ryu, Ken, Akuma, Gouken, Sakura, Dan. I might be missing one) put the Marth family to shame.

Upperdsah arm also does 50% more damage than the electroshock (according to divinipedia) in KIU but in smashbut they deal the same dmg.

logic and smash balance tend to not go hand in hand
Don't get me started on Shulk

It makes sense from a developmental perspective.

Pit retains the guided arrows from his Brawl incarnation, Dark Pit's are faster and stronger to fit with his "aggressive" persona.

If Pittoo's arrows were actually good, on the other hand...

That's a good point. I've always enjoyed a few clones in the roster with slight variations on their move sets. It provides degrees of characters so that I can easily branch out and learn others. (Sakura in particular is a favorite! I kinda want her in Smash too)

Although I do think Dark Pit is a bit too identical for my tastes. Also, he looks like he stumbled out of Hot Topic. So that's funny.

I love Dark Pit to death but if that was possibility I agree with you. But to be honest that might not have been possible. There were clear issues with getting Olimar to work on the 3DS version. making a clone of a character that already had dev problems probably (I dont know) would have been much harder or even impossible with what little dev time they probably had compared to a Pit clone. Now if hat one worker had made a model for rock pikmin instead of an electroshock arm in his spare time who knows.

... I don't find right put Wolf as more clone than Luigi.

Luigi has like the 40-50% of his moveset derivated and/or cloned from Mario, Wolf only like the 25%... Even when Luigi only has two cloned special attacks... he has many A attacks cloned and/or derivated (the first two jab attacks, the Side Tilt, the Up-Smash, the Down-Smash, the N-Air, the B-Air, the U-Air, all the Throws but the D-Throw).

Here're the big differences, I believe.
Every one of Wolf's specials are a "custom special" level difference apart. At this point, Luigi holds two unique specials and a generally different feel than Mario.
Wolf and Lucas are incredibly comparable for having "custom special" difference level specials to their other part, and a generally thematic-matching moveset that plays still similar on principle.
They play as differently as :4ganondorf::4falcon:, :4feroy::4marth:, :4falco::4fox:, or (with some dispute) :4tlink::4link: but with far more differentiation in the moveset itself with mostly original A moves and largely unique Smashes.

However, :4luigi: is too unique of a character in comparison to :4mario:to have ANYONE on the same tier as him as of yet. It isn't JUST in the amount of moveset differentiation in hitboxes and animations, it's in the felt difference and Luigi is about as much of a clone in gameplay as :4mewtwo::4lucario: or :4myfriends::4marth:

Biggest issue for me with Wolf comes from how he still has that Star Fox character stigma despite being different

Like I said, Luigi only shares two specials between Mario while all of Wolf's specials are still variants of Fox so he shares all of Fox's. Doesn't matter the difference or properties. He's still like Lucas where he still doesn't have any difference in style but the similarities are still there

And Landmaster #3 still haunts Wolf

Ok....so, in advance I apologize for bringing this stuff up again but there's a few things I want to get off my chest based on what's been happening today...I've been at work all day but now I can actually put my elaborated thoughts down instead of just quick point form...

*ahem*

As a Zelda fan...When it comes to representation, it isn't about getting more representation, it's about getting better representation...Of course at this point the two kinda go hand in hand anyways since they aren't going to remove any characters to add new ones...Here's the thing though, Zelda is Nintendo's Third largest franchise, of course it's got a ****ton of content in the game, otherwise that's a large portion of the smash fanbase that would be pissed off...I can't say that I'm disappointed in the content that it got, especially in regards to Twilight Princess (seeing as all the characters are based on their TP designs, as well as a stage that actually does well to represent the game which also features a fairly important character, King Bublin, for the game as well, and how awesome is the Darknut in Smash Run) but at the same time, as a zelda fan...There are other aspects I would like to see implemented as well...sure I may not want any more Fire Emblem or Kid Icarus stuff added (by stuff I mean characters, other content I don't really care TBH) but those are games I currently have no attachment towards and I am still waiting for my turn...

One thing to remember the franchise hasn't received a proper newcomer since melee, Toon Link is literally it, and he's nothing more than an upgraded version of another character, one that literally has the exact same moveset of another character that happens to be another version of himself (I'm just as confused as you are)...Brawl comes along and all the Zelda fanbase gets is Toon Link, hardly hypeworthy as a whole; then Smash 4 comes along and we get....the removal of transformations and Sheik is separated from Zelda? ok...Not exactly a 'good' addition since it removed what made Zelda/Sheik so unique to begin with considering they introduced transformations to the series, and once again no new characters, just a bunch of Assists, I'm sure everyone knows how I feel about Assist Trophies, and how fed up I am with how some of these characters are being treated overall, but I digress...

Anyways, when it comes to 'representation' one statement I hear a lot, 'The main cast is already in smash, they don't need anymore' by this logic Rosalina, Bowser Jr. shouldn't have been added because the Mario franchise already had the big four, plus Yoshi and DK...I'm not trying to hate on those characters, but want a franchise needs and what the fans want shouldn't coincide with one another...and don't even get me started with all the 'Entitled' accusations either...anyways, What if DLC rolls by and once again, no new Zelda character? the best bet at this point is Impa since the other choices are stifled by their current roles in game, but even then she's got a lot of competition and seeing as we may not even know how many characters we are getting for DLC, then we may miss out on yet another speculation period....Then, What about the next game, what if we, yet again, get no newcomer, no unique addition to the roster?...When people say stuff like, 'there's clearly no logical choice for another Zelda character' I merely shake my head...Here's the thing, we Zelda fans would like something to look forward to! Other franchises get awesome characters added (some of them are pretty damn awesome, not gonna lie) but saying that the Zelda franchise, as big as it is, has nothing more to offer (when that clearly is not the case) is very short-sighted and somewhat frustrating to hear...

As a Metroid fan, a lot of what I said above still holds true, except for the amount of possibilities for playable characters which pretty much ends at just Ridley and Dark Samus, at this time...but I'm even more disappointed when people say 'Well Metroid doesn't need any more characters because the game is about Samus being isolated and alone'....srsly?...

----

Now....

When it comes to Midna specifically...I'm very disappointed at how many people are quick to discredit her simply for being a one-off...'Such and such is not an important character to their respective franchise because they've only had one major role therefore there is no feasible reason to add them into the Smash bros roster'...What if I told you that being a one-off adds to her appeal, because if any One-off Zelda character were to be added, it would be Midna...Fans want her to return, and I'm pretty sure Nintendo is well aware of this (recall that Midna is the only character in Hyrule Warriors to have more than one playable role besides Link and Zelda)...Aonuma himself stated his dissatisfaction in not being able to use Midna's true form for more than just the end of the game...
This isn't so much about how important a character is to their respective franchise as a whole (Sheik isn't important to the Zelda franchise at all outside of OoT, same can be said for Dark Pit and Lucina outside of their respective games)...this is purely based upon the character's popularity; Sheik is popular because of her seniority in Smash, Dark Pit and Lucina for their roles in the recent games, they weren't added just because they were easy to make, and I'm sure Sakubias had little to do with it either...Rosalina is actually another example, though she isn't a one off in the Mario series, a lot of her recurring roles are due to her popularity...Isabelle seems to be on the same road as well...

Midna is a character that can generate a lot of hype for the Zelda fanbase; she'd be a unique character, one that is (finally) not part of the Triforce, one that would be hella fun to use, and one that can add some more diversity to the ever growing roster...As well as being a popular character overall, and an iconic companion from the Zelda series (only Navi and Epona would be more iconic but Navi's iconic because she's annoying AF, and Epona, is literally just a horse)

All the talk about being a 'one-off', relevance, recency, overall importance...doesn't really matter at the end of the day because not every character on the Smash roster fills every criteria and some just flat-out contradict these points...some are placed because they are popular fan-favourites or because they are just awesome to have....

----

tl;dr-Regardless of representation fans want what they want...Zelda fans would like something to look forward to and not to spectate constantly....NEED MORE METROID!!!!....Midna is awesome!!!!...I need sleep...............

My opinion on the clones is this: In Smash, the word "clone" means nothing more than "untapped potential". Luigi went from full clone to barely a semi-clone in the span of three games. Characters like Young Link, Dark Pit, Lucina, and Pichu all have the ability to become something much more (and let's face it, better for competitive play) than what they are/were if people are willing to give them the chance. Even those that don't get many changes to their moveset can be very different from their counterparts (prime example being Ganondorf). Even Alph could separate himself from Olimar and be unique in his own right. That's why it makes me sad that everybody says all clones should be cut (or just any clones for that matter.) because, come next Smash, every single one of them can become much more unique.

(That last sentence was awkwardly worded but I don't care!)

We almost had Alph with Rock Pikmin as a clone. Still feel he would have been better than Dark Pit.
This, I feel may have been overplayed.

We know that Alph was considered for a clone* and we know that Olimar was planned to incorporate Rock Pikmin, but there isn't any correlation given between Alph being a clone using Rock Pikmin.

*And even then, we don't really know that; it's assumed that Sakurai stated so in an interview because he used the term "model swap" which he has used to describe characters like Falco and Ganondorf, but it may also refer to being a literal model swap of Olimar due to being a different character. To fully understand the context, we would need to know how he describes the Koopalings.
It also implies that he considered Alph as a "clone" early on, which doesn't add up.

We actually do. Sakurai refers to clones as "model swap characters" and costumes as "palette swaps". Alph was meant to make the jump to actual clone like Dr. Mario, Dark Pit and Lucina did, but it was deemed nonviable for development. Olimar was hard enough to implement on the 3DS already, let alone making a clone of him.

The year is 2015 and people still judge clone status merely by the Specials?

Dr Mario has 1 different special as a "Full clone" (Defined by Sakurai), while
Toon Link and Lucas has "variants" of all the specials as a "Semi-clone".

Go figure that.

Wait. Mewtwo was cut to add Wario, or was I reading that wrong?
He's saying that in order to get Wario in Melee, he would've had to cut Mewtwo or the FE characters, giving a concrete example about how it was the clones or nothing.

Do you guys think it's possible that we could get some sort of last minute addition clone/semi-clone character as DLC?

Sakurai has also stated, in response to fan e-mail regarding Melee, that clones are a form of “fan service” and were made under the expectation that players would be happy with their inclusion.
Inb4 we get only clones for DLC...:troll:

Possibly...contrary to popular belief dev time is still limited and if Sakurai maintains the idea that he wants to 'make as such DLC as possible,' while resources are somewhat limited compared to pre-release development, it is very likely we'll see a few clone/semi-clones...the two most likely characters that fit this mold being Dixie and Impa...so far we only got one unique newcomer out of four characters, two of those being semi-clones...

I suppose that Sakurai would want to maximize on making as many DLC characters as possible, so I wouldn't be surprised if we got another semi-clone along with a newcomer or two.

Last minute doesn't really make a lot of sense in DLC. The deadlines are much more relaxed.

I won't expect a lot of clones in DLC unless they're looking for easy money.

Which further testifies why Mewtwo is such a badly balanced character. Both in Melee and Smash 4, whoop di whoop!

Mewtwo isn't that bad in Sm4sH TBH. Not even close to how bad he was in Melee.
