I am more invested in the Mario Kart community...that does not stop me from enjoying the Diddy Kong Racing! I play on the N64 version. I have played that game for a long time when I was young. The nostalgia!

I remember looking at the Twin Galaxies score list. There was some competition a while ago for top times. My best time relative to a course is Whale Bay at around 58 seconds. I forget what other courses I devoted time to. I will have to check later.

I remember having fun with cheat codes with some good friends of mine. Maximum power-ups (especially the red balloons for 10 missles, hunting each other down in Icicle Pyramid with our maps off!) and two of us playing adventure mode simultaneously. I also read the Player's Guide so often, it's worn out.

My brother and I would always fight over the small mouse character. What was her name? Trixi? She was really good for some reason, and whoever ended up winning with her was subject to mass character johns.
Pipsy. I remember racing with her. Brilliant turning. I remember dueling against my friend's Conker.

For my 500 posts, I celebrate by giving a link to the Japanese DKR64 commercial!

Dang, did I love that game. I still think I have one of those promotional videos that they released when the game came out. Maybe I should find it.

Better than Mario Kart 64. A lot better.

One of the reasons why N64 era Rare is arguably the greatest development team of all time (for a single generation).

The cheat codes in Diddy Kong Racing MADE the replay value of this game. So fun.

The best driver in the game is T.T.

His top speed is so high for his high traction, handling, weight, and acceleration.

The 2nd and 3rd best are Tiptup(the green turtle) and Pipsy( that yellow mouse), respectively.

Conker is in this game, but this was before he went out drinking.

Icicle Pyramid + FREEFORALL(maximum power up) FTW!
Sorry to quote you so late man, but I just wanna say this.

Pipsy is better than T.T. Way better. Pipsy has the best handling in the game, even in the hovercraft. T.T is only the best when he gets the boosters. I would dare say Pipsy is the best in the game.

And I loved making Wizpig my ***** with T.T :p

Since I still own a N64 and have both MK64 and DKR, and am also a competitive racer (i.e. Time Trials) for both games, I qualify for replying to a couple of posts.

Maybe. At any rate, MK64 would be considered the more competitive (Time Trials) game due to the sheer technical ability it requires over DKR (mainly for powersliding mechanics). Of course, if I look at it from a casual perspective (i.e. all-out war in battle mode), I like DKR better for Darkwater Beach and Icicle Pyramid with Maximum Weapons cheat; good times.

For the rest of your post, I also agree Rare definitely made some quality games for N64.

Fun Fact #1: TT (fastest) and Pipsy (slowest) are on opposite ends of the top speed scale.
Fun Fact #2: Boosters equalize top speeds; there is no rating (that I know of) for fastest booster speed.

Anyway, handling is not really that important in this game due to the ability to powerslide. TT has decent enough handling that turning is not an issue and his top speed is much higher than Pipsy. I like Pipsy for casual competition and used to race with her until I unlocked TT. TT is MUCH faster than Pipsy that anyone who uses her for competitive racing I would consider them to to have a handicap. For example, Pipsy is nearly impossible to get under 58-59 seconds (NTSC) for Whale Bay. In Time Trials, those extra seconds (many, many, seconds) TT finishes before Pipsy is significant.

The only time I find Pipsy better is if I am at Darkwater Beach (maybe, due to Pipsy's overturning) or Icicle Pyramid due to the emphasis on handling required to win.
