The dragonfly. A small dragon, growing only to about 18 inches, and an insectivore. Like the insect of the same name, the dragonfly is helpful to humans in that it eats pestilent insects, such as flies and mosquitoes, and on occasion, spiders.
Many keep them as pets to rid their homes of such insects, but sadly, captive dragonflies rarely live very long, dying after about a year, whereas free-roaming dragonflies can live for more than 15.
Their mating season starts in the middle of Winter so that the hatchlings will come to life just as the insects come back in Spring.
Dragonflies tend to live in marshy areas, but due to the constant reclamation of land, the marshes are slowly disappearing, along with their homes.
They come in a large variety of colors and patterns, the Common Dragonfly being green with blue stripes, and the very rare, Royal Dragonfly being a bright red with golden spines and claws...
