Only now got to watch the direct due to wanting to focus on finals yesterday but here are my thoughts

FE Echoes: I love that they are releasing Gaiden outside of Japan! Looking forward to its release!

FE Warriors: Disappointed about the lack of new information but its cool to see the game in action.

FE Switch: Even though we didn't see gameplay, its cool to see a console FE for the first time in a decade.

FE Heroes: Seems very interesting. I love how this is going to be a FE crossover. The new artwork for some of the old characters looks great!

I'd just like to point out that you can vote for Roy only once (under Binding Blade), whereas you can vote for both Binding Blade Guinivere and Blazing Sword Guinivere. Similarly, you can also vote twice for Hector. I can see the Hector fangirls abusing this feature...
*votes twice for Hector*

So regarding FE Heroes, the first character i voted for was Lyon. Next, i'm going to vote for Lilina. After that, Alm and Celica in celebration of Echos.

Speaking of Echos, there's no doubt that it's going to get some modern FE elements in. I expect Supports. Not S-Supports for obvious reasons but just the C-B-A Supports. When Shadow Dragon got a remake, it lacked Supports, which one of the biggest reasons why that game failed. So adding Supports to Echos is vital. Again, S-Supports won't be in because that'll just mess up the story. But general Supports are needed. They did say that "Gaiden's story will be reimagined on a grander scale" so i definitely see more story elements and regular Supports. Because the original Gaiden's story was....ok. And the characters almost had no personalities. Remember, it was an NES game, so you can't blame it. I wouldn't be surprised if Casual Mode was in Echos. That seems like a given at this point. Especially since newer players are going to be caught off guard by the fact that Archers can attack at close range. Oh and maybe Skills are gonna come back.

Now, i do kinda hope that the maps in Echos are revamped a bit. The original Gaiden shares a flaw with Awakening: most of the maps were pretty basic and sometimes just boxes with enemies (if you want an example of Gaiden's maps, look at the Witch's Trial DLC in Fates). Now, to be fair, in Gaiden's case, it was excusable because it was an NES game. But the gameplay footage did show off what appeared to be a new character so maybe the maps also get updated. And now that i think about it, weapon triangle is gonna be in and the HP Magic Cost is gonna come back. So you'll still have to strategize. Oh and that reminds me, Echos probably won't have weapon durability because Gaiden didn't have it. So the big question is, will it be handled like it was in Gaiden or will they go the more modern route and use the debuff system from Fates.

There was also a "Food" selection shown in the gameplay footage right before Alm fought that enemy soldier. So it looks like maybe the food bonuses from Fates will return. You'll likely be able to buy these at the towns you'll visit through out the story.

And you know, maybe, just maybe, if Echos sells well enough (which i think it will, i've seen a lot of hype for this game), then maybe Intelligent Systems will realize "hey, we don't need 'waifus and husbandos' to sell Fire Emblem. We don't need an Avatar character. The series can do just as good without them". Because, let's be honest, all the Elitists complain about "bad stories" or "dull characters" but what they really want gone is just the S-Supports.

WELCOME!! As my username implies, I am Meta Knight! :4metaknight: Pleasure to make your acquaintance!

Corrin is a really fun character to play in my opinion. While he/she (gonna go with he for convenience) isn't particularly outstanding in the competitive field, he's still a great character. Given the way his moveset is built, he's primarily played defensively. You can check out the various matchup tools and frame data charts available right here on the Corrin Forum for more in-depth stuff, such as which characters he excels against, or whether or not his side-tilt is faster than Sheik's Fair (forward-aerial attack). I personally enjoy spamming his down-throw (the one where he turns into a dragon and goes "RRAAAAAWR!!"). While he can be a bit more complicated in some areas, I'd say for the most part he's easy to use and fun to play!
Oh wow, thank you! I'll keep all that in mind then! Thanks for being so friendly too, love. :)

Welcome! As you could probably guess, this place consists primarily of Fire Emblem nerds. Also, this is your first forum? Welcome to forums! We talk about stuff here. Mostly Fire Emblem stuff.

As far as characters to play, I think Corrin's a great character, she's definitely interesting and unique. Some starting tips? Well, Corrin has a diverse moveset that is capable of doing a lot of different things. I'd recommend experimenting with them to see what they all do.

One thing that you might not get just by messing around is how to do what's called an "instant pin," which is absolutely one of Corrin's best moves, so I'll go over that. On the ground, her side special has two parts. When you first press side B, Corrin does this little hop in the air; if you hit B again or A, she'll transform her arm into a lance thing and strike diagonally down. If her attack hits the ground, Corrin can choose to kick forward or backward. If it pierces the enemy, they'll be pinned for the kick. You want the tip of the attack to hit the ground, so you can kick forward or away, which moves you to greater safety--if the tip doesn't lodge in the ground, Corrin's pretty vulnerable as she falls slowly to the ground.

An instant pin is where Corrin does the little hop and strikes immediately as she's rising. The best way to do this is just to do a quick sliding motion with your thumb across the B to A buttons. If you do it right, this attack comes out super quick, and it'll lodge in the ground, and you can do the kick. If Corrin strikes the air, it was done too slow.

As for some general gameplay advice with Corrin, Corrin has some bad mobility, so she doesn't necessarily want to charge right in. Rather, she can control a large area around her with the reach of her attacks, and she has some really great aerial attacks that string together very well. She can combo her attacks pretty easily, which is a lot of fun.

Thank you for the useful advise! I also hear its easier to play on the WiiU than the 3DS but, I'm confined to the 3DS for now. Would you say training against computers is wise? Because in my limited experience with online fights its touch and go. Also I can't play online for the time being due to my wifi being deactivated and my password changed XD (very long story for that lol), but I'm planning on getting a new 3DS within a few months. So I guess computer training will have to do~

Thank you for being so friendly <3

Generally using CPU opponents isn't great because fighting them isn't anything like fighting another person (basically the whole mental part of the game is taken out when playing against the computer), but if it's all ya got for now then you might as well. Being good vs the CPU is still better than not being good against them.

But you'll also want to learn as much about the character and fighting fundamentals as you can as well, that will also help you improve even when you don't have real people to practice against.

As it turns out, you can vote for the same character multiple times. That means all my votes are going to Takumi. I'm so sorry Hector.

Actually, I was thinking about "trading" votes with someone (e.g. I promise to vote for whatever character you most want in exchange for you promising to vote for Takumi at least once). That way, each character will get more widespread support.

Nah Nah I'll vote for you if you vote for Takumi. Deal? :cheep:

One minor thing overlooked in the direct is the release date:

Screen Shot 2017-01-20 at 18.54.42.png

USA

Screen Shot 2017-01-20 at 18.54.44.png

EUROPE
After the 3 month delay between the US and EU release of Fates, it's neat to get an identical release date this time. Even the 1 month delay from the Japanese release (April 20th) is still better than the 8 month delay Fates had.

And another thing:

Michael Chu, lead writer of Overwatch, is a Fire Emblem fan. Something I definitely approve of.

Oh good, I won't have to feel guilty when I see Europeans on the internet complaining that they don't have it yet.

Also that localization gap is really small, so thank Arceus for that. I hate having to wait for a game that's already out in Japan.

IAmMetaKnight IAmMetaKnight there's your Takumi vote

I do wonder what exactly this voting is for though....
From the Fire Emblem Heroes voting website: "You're choices will determine the top male and female Heroes. They'll appear in Fire Emblem Heroes in special Choose your Legends outfits"

So basically, this voting is about who you want to see get the special treatment (and if i see Sigurd get the special treatment, i will actually be mad).

Oh and the results will also determine special phone wallpapers.

Well, it took me almost a year, but I finally did it; I finished Fates!

Man, what a fun game. I'd even go so far as to say it was probably my personal Game of the Year for 2016. While the story was...not the greatest, the gameplay was superb, and I'm definitely excited to see if/how they build off of some of Fates' mechanics in future games. Things like My Castle could definitely be a lot cooler with some more additions!

While I do still have the DLC to play through on Fates, I'll probably wait and do it later in the year now, as I think I may be a little burnt out on Fire Emblem for now, ha ha. I think I'll probably just mess around with the mobile app here and there and then jump back into the main games when Echoes releases in May.

Oh, and as for the Fire Emblem Heroes vote, my choices so far have been Awakening Tiki, Beruka, and I plan on picking Selena for today. I'll probably make tomorrow's vote either Selkie or Corrin.

On the subject of our Choose Your Legends event picks, here are the characters I have chosen thus far:

Yep, everyone from Team Takumi got my vote. I'm currently debating whether I should repeat a new vote for each of them or go for a different character next. We'll see.

I feel like everyone is going to be voting for mostly Awakening and Fates winners. That's why you should all vote for Lute and only Lute.

So if you go on the Japanese website for Fire Emblem Echoes, you can actually listen to the full Battle Map (Alm) theme.
It's been extended for 15 minutes thanks to MasterEnex.

I'm also putting the link to the Japanese Echoes website because it contains two animated cutscenes from the game. They are the same ones shown in the direct, just extended a bit.
https://www.nintendo.co.jp/3ds/ajjj/index.html

And finally, here are some Fire Emblem memes
Why does that theme fit with everything?

There is no escaping Melee Marth's grab.

I've only voted for Stahl and Setsuna at this point on that Heroes poll thing. My next votes will go to Gaius and Xander.

Did anyone else notice that Alm is left-handed? At first I thought his artwork might be mirrored in certain instances, but then I noticed the amiibo holds the sword in the left hand. Was he left-handed in Gaiden? Or is that a new touch on the devs' part?

Will trade a vote for Takumi for a vote for Lute. I was considering voting for Lute anyway; she was my favorite character from Sacred Stones. As of right now, however, the only other character I plan on voting for is Hector (outside of trades).

Well, let's look at his original artwork

As a side-note, Alm's FE13 artwork also had him right-handed.
Now, let's look at FE15 Alm.

Yep, he is left-handed here. But just to make sure, let's look at the gameplay

Yep, he's left-handed! Ladies and gentlemen, we have our first left-handed Lord!

Link is right-handed? Alm is left-handed? What is this madness?
Will trade a vote for Takumi for a vote for Lute. I was considering voting for Lute anyway; she was my favorite character from Sacred Stones. As of right now, however, the only other character I plan on voting for is Hector (outside of trades).
I wanna wait until at least day 10 on that, for the sake of a screenshot I want to take.

Evaluating that statement makes for an interesting paradox.

  • Alm is left handed
  • Alm was the Lord in Gaiden
  • Gaiden was the second game in the series
Wouldn't that mean we've had our first left-handed Lord since the second game? One could argue that his artwork clearly portrays him as being right-handed in the original, but bear in mind that this was a simpler time. Kirby was portrayed as being white on the box art of the western release of Kirby's Dreamland, yet he was still canonically pink in that game. Maybe Alm was drawn as right-handed in the original artwork for the purpose of simplicity, or maybe the artists were too lazy to clarify or think about it? Perhaps we could still say he was canonically left-handed in the original game as well... in which case we've actually had our first left-handed Lord since Gaiden; we just didn't know it until now.

Illuminati confirmed.

So all the child characters in the Fire Emblem Heroes Ballot have their 'canon' hair colour, which most of the time is the same as their parents. The few exceptions are even correctly accounted for.

Except Morgan; they have grey hair they have never had before. I'm going to take this rare opportunity to list off some useless trivia about hair:
  • Morgan's previous hair, for those wondering, was black in the official artwork. In-game however, it defaults to pink. Yarne and Morgan are the only characters that do that, everyone else sticks to their hair as per official art.
  • Hair colour in both Awakening and Fates is actually generated on the go; there isn't a bunch of files with every possible hair colour for a character. Characters like Maribelle, Lissa, and Flavia seem similar at first glance, but they actually result in children with slightly different hair.
  • It is impossible to perfectly replicate the hair of some characters, such as Nah:

  • Finally, Yarne's confession CG features gives him fur colour based on his father:

This does not apply to his standard portrait. On another note, the above combinations are only possible by fathering Yarne with Male Robin, then viewing the confession in the Support Log. Although I am one of the 5 people who likes Yarne, pretty much no one is going to notice these differences.

There we go. I find it really bizarre that the hair is essentially procedurally generated, so I hope this little rant created from spotting Morgan's greying hair taught someone something.

So about that.....Alm's map sprite was right handed.

So he went from being right handed in Gaiden, to being left handed in Echoes.

It's been a while since a Fates meme video has been shared, but I just found a pretty good one:

Any iCarly fans here? You will probably like this one a lot. I know I found it pretty funny.

I might share how my Fates Ballot stuffing is going, and my various justifications for them.
Screen Shot 2017-01-25 at 1.12.37 PM.png

Roy was the first vote since he's been a favourite of mine since Melee; and been supporting him throughout Smash 4's lifecycle until his DLC.
Second was Joshua, perhaps my all time favourite Myrmidon in the series. He's got a likeable personality, JoshuaXNatasha is OTP, and
The reveal of him being the prince of Jehanna is a surprising reveal and makes him even more badass. Plus he's a Myrmidon - what's not to like about em?
Next was Ike - and this isn't without reason - One of FE's most popular and recognisable characters thanks to his breakout success through Smash Bros, and being a good leader for the Greil Mercenaries he inherits from his father as merc commander.
Following on was Robin (M) - who's been knowing for tipping all sorts of scales. Awakening is probably one of my favourite games in the FE series (If I were to give a top three, I'd say: 1: Awakening, 2: Sacred Stones and 3: Path of Radiance), and Robin's certainly a breakout hero for his/her game.
Eirika was chosen because Sacred Stones was the first Fire Emblem game I played, back around 2009-10 when I got into the series proper. Eirika was a pretty good character in her game, I felt - a kind princess who loved her land, but developed the strength she needed to truely fight to protect the kingdom that was stolen from her.
The most recent one was Fem!Corrin, mainly to represent Fates in this ballot spree. Admittedly, I haven't played a lot of Fates since I stopped playing when i was a bit concerned whether or not I'd be having as much fun as I had with Awakening, but when I beat Pokémon Moon, I intend to at least finish Birthright before the release of Fire Emblem Echoes.

That's all from me, folks. Strider signing out for now.

More Fire Emblem Battle Ballot updates? Sure thing! Here's mine:

At the moment, it seems like my next batch of votes will go to Laslow, Sakura, and a Fire Emblem Awakening character. We'll see how this all plays out.
