Hey swf, I've got 3 controllers, one I bought from a gamestop recently that I painted and gave as a gift to myself, a backup controller bought back in like 06, and a I believe a launch controller that has never been opened. Now, tonight I was mixing parts between gamestop and 06 controller, and I noticed something that explains alot of annoying things:
On the 06 one, the analog stick is glued at a slight angle!
this slight angle has been giving me illusion suicide trouble for years during my shine turn around practice.

Post some of your tech issues you've run into over your controller that you don't john about in tournament.

I bought a silver one from Gamestop about 4 years ago. I opened it up and another black one and compared the two. The silver had springs and the black one didn't. No wonder doing some things were hard at the time.

About controller issues my controller got this weird fault where sometimes it'll just start "holding" up in-game, even though the stick was in neutral position when I plug it in. Even happened all of a sudden after a match at the character selection screen... Same thing happened to one of my friends before me, and i've never heard of or experienced it before... I have the luigi controller and it was his mario controller it happened to so i'm thinking this might be a japanese club nintendo controller problem only? Or has anyone else experienced this? :p (A shame because they have the best grip of all controllers IMO - a bit more rough instead of smooth. Will probably keep using this one until it becomes a problem for me midmatch)

It's probably because the stick was in a non-neutral position when you plugged it in. Which messes up the neutrality of the stick and it goes all crazy.

I specifically said it was in neutral position :p
As I said this has even happened after I already played on the same console for a while, and i've had to replug it 4 or 5 times before it got fixed (for some reason pulling the stick out and pushing it in before you plug the controller in however helps - though not always either... Got that tip from said friend who already switched controllers).
I know about the non-neutral position things, and have actually abused it to be able to throw young links boomerang in a specific angle in break the targets before :p

I do have a controller sitting around that has this same problem, but I assumed it had something to do with a little damage to the cord. I'll open it up tonight and check out the box and see if I can give you more info on a similar issue.

currently using a white controller

longest lasting controller was my black controller
i lost it, i have no idea where or how, but i am still sad about it, the only issue i had after 3-4 years of owning it was that the joystick was a little loose, which i chalked up to SWDing too much (trying too at least)

shortest lasting controller would be my new silver one, which i bought for brawl's release
the R button sticks, probably an easy fix but w/e, still messed up

i've got a black controller that doesn't recognize when you press up on the control stick

and another controller who's c-stick sticks iirc

white one is working fine, wish i had my black one, colin loaned me a purple one maybe that was the one who's c-stick ended up sticking...idk

I sincerely believe these issues are related to how hard you play with your controller. If your someone who slams the control stick around like mad you will eventually run into issues like this, if your more precise you will have less problems because the controllers aren't constantly being banged and smashed under your hands

Sometimes I'll plug in my controller, start playing, and my C-Stick won't be working. I unplug and plug it back in and it's fine.

I don't know if it's typical for orange controllers, but I've had mine since '06 playing very often and never had a single problem with it. It just keeps getting smoother the more I play o.0 and I play spacies, and like to be wayyy over technical in friendlies.

Could just be lucky.

I have 2 black backup controllers with a similar issue where it will sometimes hold to one direction (in the case of one in the down direction, and left or right for the other) even in the neutral position. I'm fairly certain this is an issue that has to do with the analog stick itself and just getting worn down over time. I haven't tried, but I'm willing to bet this is a fixable problem with a little time spent tinkering on the analog stick.

Aside from that, my primary controller, a black one I've had for years, works perfectly. It is broken in perfectly for my taste and the grooves on the top of the analog are worn flat. Only problem I ever had with it was the L go stuck light shielding, however I fixed that by adjusting the spring.

My controller rarely does this, except it goes down instead of up. If this happens, hold Y X and start and it will reset your controller. It's different then unplugging, hard to explain (I'm also on my iPhone) but trust me.

Also, has anyone else noticed the extra spring things on some orange controllers? Like their like spring reinforcers or something
