Congratulations, Min Min! ARMS character(s) for Smash discussion

Anyone else think that if ARMS were represented, Sakurai wouldn't choose Spring Man as a character? I compare it to the reason why he didn't choose Chrom and chose Robin instead for a never Fire Emblem rep. Spring Man is kinda boring and generic as a personality. Wouldn't Sakurai choose someone with more spice? I'd imagine him choosing someone like Min Min or Twintelle.

Sakurai skipped out on Chrom because his moveset would've ended up being too similar to that of Marth/Ike compared to what Robin brought to the table...nothing really to do with their personality...

Even though Spring Man is the 'Mr. Basic' of Arms, the concept behind his potential moveset is something that is still unique to Smash...I agree I would prefer someone else over Spring Man but he still can bring something to Smash that no one else can outside of Arms...

Min Min and Twintelle however are two characters that have shown to be amoung the most popular characters within the Arms cast, even moreso than Spring Man, so if Sakurai would opt for either of them over him it would be due to their popularity, not necessarily their personality (though personality could be...one of the reasons they'd be popular, so I guess)

Yeah, Spring Man is the face of ARMS so I definitely see him making it in, especially if he was chosen before they knew where ARMS eventually ends up in (and who becomes popular). Having spring arms is already inherently a unique thing in Smash, not seen before. I get that Spring Man may seem boring ARMS-wise, but Smash-wise he'd be a whole new concept.

Not that I'm against any other characters, ARMS did a super good job with the characters (I love ma girl Mechanica).

Remember that in spite of being the basic character of ARMS, Spring Man has his own gimmicks.

Namely his ground dashes can deflect punches and at low health, his attacks are permanently charged. May encroach on Lucario's thing a bit but I'm thinking at 100%+ His smash attacks charge at double speed.

I think the Arms characters I’d be hype for the most is

1. Twintelle
2. Helix
3. Spring Man / Ribbon Girl alt

But man I really want Twintelle! I personally think someone who punches with her hair would add something a little extra unique to the roster. Helix would be also a incredibly unique fighter.

Pretty much. the big difference between Chrom and Spring Man is that the latter would automatically stand out more in comparison to other playable characters in Smash seeing as whilst Spring Man seems like just another character in the context of ARMS, he would stand out very much within Smash Bros. In fact, Spring Man has the potential, along with the Inklings, to be one of the most unique and diverse characters within Smash, being something like Dhalsim.

Some of the general character thread did in fact bring up some decent points to why Spring Man could possibly be considered the protagonist of the first game (not necessarily the series... it is one game in), but I am not convinced Spring Man is going to stay front and center in the next game. Mostly, it seemed convenient to do it this game, with the next game having two different characters on the cover, once again following in the footsteps of Splatoon.

To be fair, I have already seen so many people arguing that the game was too late into development to be considered for Smash (lmfao... Yeah, you have to love the lengths some people would go to convince themselves of something). While that argument is more or less immaterial to his chances, I have to say, if he was indeed going to be replaced, THAT is something that is likely too far off for Sakurai, or even the Arms team, to be fully aware of. Remember, Splatoon got a sequel because they wanted it on the Switch. I have never followed Arms, but I somewhat doubt they are planning a sequel at the moment. Beyond that, Inklings are not characters, they are avatars. Subtle difference because they did change the hosts and whatnot to be completely fair.

You have to remember, this is supposed to be marketed towards Switch owners, many of which did not own Wii Us. Spring Man and Ribbon Girl are front and center. Sakurai is not going to care that Spring Man is not necessarily the most popular. They want to cross-promote Arms. In order to do that, you use the character on the box. Beyond that, Smash is what MAKES characters popular.

Spring Man was used, alongside Ribbon Girl, in likelihood that they are just the most humanlike, and most easy to start with from a marketing point of view. ARMS is not exactly an easy to grasp game, and so they needed to start with two characters that were.

Any arguments suggesting Springman wouldn't be the mascot are pretty weak arguments tbh...he's right there on the boxart and he's still in a lot of promotional material and marketing for the game...including being one of the first characters revealed for the game during the January Switch presentation...

This isn't an rpg where they switch up protagonists regularly, which the main why rpgs do that is because is for plot reasons as they tend to be a lot more story heavy compared to fighting games...

Personally I'd want Twintelle- she's popular, can use her regular arms and her hair ARMS, and we don't yet have a black character in Smash (let alone a black woman); also I just really like her! I think she's the third or maybe fourth most likely after Spring Man, Ribbon Girl, and possibly Helix for some reason.

I think having Spring Man in Smash would greatly improve ARMS's sales. Put Spring Man on the cover of Sma5h and kids will eat that **** up.

As many have pointed out, I'm inclined to think it HAS to be Spring Man...even if I'd much prefer Helix. Pretty much every character in ARMS is bursting with uniqueness, so it seems like a shame, I know. But I think Spring Man is a kind of necessary step, if you will.

ARMS is a new series to Smash, and one that is heavily character-based. With a game like that, it would seem quite strange to put in one of the ensemble before the headliner (or headliners, considering Ribbon Girl.) Imagine if Mario were a new series, or Zelda, or Kirby. Are Mario, Link or Kirby the most popular or most unique characters in their series? Most likely not. But you wouldn't choose Sheik, Bowser or Meta Knight to put in these series' Smash debuts. I'd say Sakurai agrees--not one series in Smash has ever had anyone but their main character--or someone who could be considered the main character--join first. Robin is not a good counterargument because, for one, he actually IS the main character in his game (the whole story starts from his perspective,) and for two, FE was a veteran series with a "main" character in already--Marth. Likewise, Pokemon will always have Pikachu, so they can pick any new Pokemon they want and it doesn't seem strange.

The only possible argument is that Spring Man is not the main character--and I'll give you that. He's more like a "co-main" with Ribbon Girl. Honestly, I can see them both getting in, in a Pit/Dark Pit kind of scenario. If I were going to bet, I'd put my money on that. But in any case, Spring Man will likely be the frontrunner, with Ribbon Girl as an unlockable or alt, as with male Robin and female Robin. It's a bit politically incorrect, but that's how these things usually go...

Then again, it'd be pretty cool of Nintendo if they reversed that situation, and made Spring Man the clone. But will that happen?

And that so far there is not enough evidence to say otherwise.
A game without a main character takes a few iterations before the true mascot in marketing reveals itself.

Youre right- its not an RPG, its a fighting game, a series known for waiting to see which character emerges as the easiest to market. When we get the next iteration, I will concede he is the main character if either the box art or story dictate.
But after one game, no, it really doesn't mean all that much.

This was Street Fighter 1. Where is Ryu!? Obviously the mascot is not on the cover in this first iteration.
And that's not all.

This was not that far after. Still no Ryu.

This came out after SF2, which did have Ryu on the cover. But funny that this one is also missing the mascot.

Mortal Kombat. The protagonist of the story is Liu Kang. This is unquestionable as this game, unlike ARMS, actually has a story.
Here is the first boxart.

Yet, we know that the mascot is not even the protagonist! It is Scorpion. And that took some time to develop.

So when do we finally get the mascot on the cover with MK?
Not in the arcade version. (well, arguably this isnt a boxart, but same principle)

Hell, Mortal Kombat 3 ultimate (not pictured) is the first time I can find a character on boxart for MK. And they chose unmasked sub zero. In fact, I dont think Scorpion appears on the cover until Mortal Kombat 9. (Though this I am still fact checking).

What about other fighting series that have long standing legacies?

Certainly we finally have the mascot on the cover.

...but wait, Sakurai said he considered Heihachi! That means in itself it doesnt need to be the mascot.

And still though, he has appeared on the cover.


This history of boxart in legacy fighting games accurately shows that being on the cover has almost no correlation to being the protagonist, nor the mascot, or even the character Sakurai would add into the game.

In other words, Spring Man being on the box means very little.

I will say that ARMS hasn't been around long enough for one particular fighter to get a massive following over the others and the main protagonist like Chun-li, Scorpion & Sub-zero or Captain Falcon (don't deny it, you know him as the guy with the punch from Smash Bros)

Closest I've got is Twintelle who inspire a lot of Waifu memes but I'm not sure that's a factor for getting into Smash.

Spring Man is like Ryu in that representing his games mechanics should make him unique enough for Smash as, unlike Chrom, he's not competing with anyone who came before.

Smash has the funny power of essentially determining who becomes the face of a series (much like with Marth and Shulk for example), so even if ARMS itself doesn't have a standout "mascot" (though I'd personally still argue Spring Man is it), if they go through with adding a character in Smash, that character will become the face of ARMS.

Anyway, one of the developers (Yabuki) was interviewed in Famitsu and apparently he says a few things about Spring Man and Twintelle:

"The fighter who left the greatest impression on Yabuki is Spring Man, because he was the first ever character created, so he taught the hardships of creating a new character to every staff members as they gradually expanded his character settings."

"Yabuki notes that Twintelle is very popular worldwide. He mentions the picture where she is working out and her hair doing weight lifting is very popular in particular. Perhaps that’s because she looks appealing when working out."

...so who knows really.

The fact that she has a multi-jump makes her really different than the other characters especially in smash where that kind of thing is really important. Can't wait for Ribbon Girl and Spring Man to show up in a trailer together and have the port vs. new game debate be reborn as alt skin vs. different character.

On a completely different note I kinda want to see Dr. Coyle in smash. Love to see those villains.

Anyone else think that if ARMS were represented, Sakurai wouldn't choose Spring Man as a character? I compare it to the reason why he didn't choose Chrom and chose Robin instead for a never Fire Emblem rep. Spring Man is kinda boring and generic as a personality. Wouldn't Sakurai choose someone with more spice? I'd imagine him choosing someone like Min Min or Twintelle.

I really dislike the idea of alt characters for Arms characters.
ARMS is a game based around the very specific and variant personalities of the characters. More than other series, the characters have been given rich and complex designs with what appears to be world of history behind each. Not to mention, this game felt a need to make Lucina different.
