Comfort zone vs matchup

Well I was sitting there, practicing my Link combos on Yoshi when a interesting thought occured to me, and its something that I've had conflict with with others in the smash community on and off while p2p'ing. Your comfort zone in a matchup vs how a char actually does against another. I feel more capable of winning if im comfortable, rather than "tier whoring" a char that is exactly as good as my others for a "easier matchup"

Example is me, in a matchup vs a good yoshi. I will actually prefer to use Link as opposed to my Pikachu because it just doesn't "feel right". So I'll use Link because it feels like a more comfortable matchup for me, despite the fact that link has a bad recovery, hes combo'd easily, and the matchup is more balanced in the Yoshi's favor. Plus its more of a challenge anyway lol, I like uphill battles. Theres all sorts of bad matchups I play the downhill side of for the sake of comfort. Anyone else like this?

Yeah definitely I'm the same. I like to play link against falcon on Hyrule because he's the main person I practise my combos against in Training Mode. There's a lot of other cases like that too. With that said it's probably not 'healthy' seeing as if someone counterpicks you with a character you're not used to dealing with with your own it can be troublesome.

I fail against Samus with Link, I prefer to fight Falcon with Link to be honest, but that's mainly because I don't camp much

If someone picks DK I have absolutely no qualms about who I choose and end up trying silly things and being overly aggressive

I generally feel safe with pika unless im going up vs specific players, specific chars.

Kabals Samus - I always do better with my Fox or Falcon

All Marios except FireBlasters - Generally i prefer fox vs mario...but i find i can deal with FireBlasters mario with my pika better then my fox .

and i am ALWAYS more comfortable in a CF ditto then anywhere else ...just thought id throw that in..CF dittos just feel so...right xD

I don't feel this with character matchups as much as I do with player matchups.

Against someone who is good fox is definitely my best character. However, against mediocre people I am more comfortable with pikachu or kirby. I think this is because fox is a demanding character to play, and one mistake can lead to a gimp. With pikachu and kirby I have a much greater margin of error.

Only playing Fox and Yoshi for the past 3-4 years there really isn't a matchup I'm not comfortable in with either of them.

Certain Links can be annoying as hell playing against with Yoshi though so if that's the case I'll just go Fox and gay the hell out of them.

I'm better with luigi vs falcon than fox/pika/kirby vs falcon.

I dislike facing good Mario's or Fox's in general.

I like the Yoshi/Falcon vs. Jiggs matchup and the Falcon vs. Pika matchup.

That's not weird, Samus beats Puff and Link beats Samus.

Seeing as people are posting what match-ups they like and don't like with their main, here's my tier list of favourite characters to play against as Puff, along with a description (in terms of fun, not who I do best against... which fits the comfort zone part of this thread):


Love:

Fox: I don't know why, I love this match-up. Even I consider it Puff's worst matchup (or a very good contender), but there's something about this match-up that I like.

Pikachu: Another really hard Puff match-up, but it forces me to work on spacing/mindgames. Definitely a challenging match-up, but enjoyable nonetheless.


Enjoy:

Yoshi: Probably my best match-up (though I haven't played a Yoshi in a long time). He's too easy to combo. Though it's not a free win...

Ness: Another possible best match-up (though I haven't played a good Ness since... I honestly can't remember). Sandbag edgeguarding Ness is fun (weak attacks so he's still alive, repeat, etc.).


Neutral:

Falcon: Spacing against Falcon is annoying. Decent to not so good Falcons are combo food for Puff, and really fun to play as for me (maybe not my opponent), but good Falcons with good spacing is... well, annoying.

Kirby: I don't hate this match-up, but it's not one of my favourites either. Kirbies that know what they are doing and do more than spam up-tilt basically make Puff's approach game strictly from above. Nair and Bair beat Puff's nair, and trying to grab Kirby is asking for punishment.

Link: I probably should have him higher, but facing projectile spam/priority spam can be annoying.

DK: Most of puff's standard combos, depending on percent, don't work on DK, and actually end up being punished (though in some cases only with a single hit like up-B).


ugh:

Mario: I just find this match-up awkward. Probably due to the fact that I've played very few Marios lol.

Luigi: Up-B and Down-B combos (from Luigi) aren't bad by themselves, combined with him being very hard to combo makes this match-up somewhat annoying.


Why are you torturing me using these characters:

Jigglypuff: I just hate this match-up. My second least favourite by far. I do fairly well in it, but I just hate the match-up in general. It's stupid. Well, that sums it up lol.

Samus: No matter how many Samuses I play, I still do not understand the match-up, and get destroyed (well, more like get annoyed, play overly aggressive, get punished, play defensive, get punished, play overly aggressive, get punished, try anything, get punished...). I hate this match-up.

if you **** all the pikachu pros with Link then just go Link

I used to like fox dittos, nowadays its all techchase to grab and gimp the ENTIRE match. It ceased to be fun because everyone all does the same **** now, I can keep up with it. Its just ****ing boring.

Donkey Kong: It is a very versatile matchup and me being a mario mainer i can also be versatile in this versatile matchup which there are versatile styles of play being versatile.

Samus: Fun matchup, i like playing with samus. ****** her with fireballs, or ****** her with uairs. but she also is feisty with her samus spank (yes, the upb is really called that. no, seriously.) and her samus shooter ball things and those bairs/dairs of doom.

Fox: LOL, same as blue yoshi, besides the whole jigglypuff thing.


Like:

Mario: Mirror matches. it's a battle between the burly mustaches.

Captain Falcon: Doug is always a fun matchup IMO. he can be tough to approach at times so i have to work on my approach/spacing.


Neutral:

Pikachu: I don't really care for the match-up, but i'll play it none the less.

Luigi: Same with pikachu.

Yoshi: same with pikachu.

Sad:

Link: Don't pick link on me. It's not because i don't like the guy, it's just because he's too easy to beat with mario.

I like playing Falcon but I hate playing against Falcon. Falcon is so annoying; continuously dashdance for a grab, approach from the top=upsmashed...continue with a generic combo (usually)... repeat all steps to win.

I hate playing Kirby on large stages because all people do is run/camp, it's especially annoying against projectile spammers or jigglypuffs who aircamp.

Contrary to popular opinion, I do like the Samus vs Jigglypuff match-up for both characters. I find it more fun for Jigglypuff.

mario isn't really the character puff can throw to uairs, i think it only works at like 0% iirc.

Don't get hit

The approach game is pretty fun in fox dittos. Lots of ways to approach through aerials, lasers, or shining your opponent's lasers.

I think Rawr means before fox dittos used to be about who could do the best combos and who was more tech savvy...now it seems to be only about throw to Fair-->Nair gimp or something of the sort.

yup, community changes but not always for the better. everyone, and I mean EVERYONE has matches they find boring, and I find campy-first-to-get-a-grab-and-gimp dittos on top of my list.

I do LOVE the campy noob though...they are so fun to throw and Dtilt off the edge. Then you get to listen to why you suck as per their crazy opinion

More like its frustrating, defensive good players border on planking with their style in general lol.

in general for who I use.

Characters I like facing:

Falcon: I find Falcon to be my best matchup, i stay completely even or beat every single falcon i have ever played with Yoshi more than any other character. I find it fun to face them as well.

Jiggs: I simply like the Yoshi-Jiggs and Falcon-Jiggs matchup.

Pikachu: I know everyone is going to LOLWUT at this. I like facing Pikachu way more than any other of the higher/top tiers. I find facing Pikachu fun...for some reason.

OK:

Luigi: I don't find myself bad or good at this matchup. I find it really easy for Falcon but difficult/annoying for Yoshi.

Samus: I enjoy samus dittos. My falcon knows how to bull. My yoshi is ok in it.

Depends on who I am using:

DK: If I am using Falcon or DK, I like the matchup. This is my worst played low tier matchup/the death of me in low tier tournaments for Yoshi.

Samus: See DK, outside of me liking Samus dittos instead of DK vs Samus.

Neutral:

Yoshi: Good yoshi's are fun to face but I don't play the matchup nearly as good as I used to

Link: some of them are fun to face. Some of them are just not. i find it impossible to not jump into Link's d-air

Fox: Depends on who it is. I do either very well or very poorly, nothing in the middle.

oh dang it:

Ness: Easy matchup for me, but I find facing ness somewhat boring.

Kirby: The issue is not the character. The issue is the people playing him. Most of the Johners and aholes in general on kailera tend to be Kirby mains. This doesn't refer to anyone on this forum. In terms of the matchup, I am trying to use Yoshi more often but I dislike camping and I force myself to camp due to the Loluptilts.

Mario: I hate facing good Mario's, especially on Dreamland. it is my worst matchup for Falcon, easily. I am unable to avoid grabs or that up smash.
