SUPER GAME TEAM is a new video game store in Columbus. We have tournaments once every couple months. To separate the power players from the woodshedders, all of our tournaments require people to play multiple games, usually one older game and one newer game. This time around, it's going to be Melee and Brawl on Friday August 6th!

For more details including address and time, go here.

Due to the size of the store and parking concerns, entries are limited to 20, so sign up today by calling or stopping in. If you pre-pay, your are locked in, but if you don't you could be bumped. Exact rules are forthcoming, but most will be the typical stuff. There will be no team matches. Controllers will be provided; no outside controllers allowed. We'll post the final rules here soon.

This tournament will be double elimination with winner's and loser's brackets. Remember, ALL PLAYERS WILL PLAY BOTH BRAWL AND MELEE OVER THE COURSE OF THE EVENT.

FRIDAY AUGUST 6TH

Smash Bros. Tournament Info:

All players will play both Smash Brothers Melee (GameCube) and Brawl (Wii). One entry per participant.

Event will be double elimination with winner's and loser's brackets.

Payout will be 120% of total entry fees in store credit. 60/25/15% 1st, 2nd, 3rd

Other prizes throughout event, even for non-participants.

ONLY 20 SPOTS AVAILABLE, SO CALL OR STOP IN TO RESERVE YOUR SPOT TODAY!

Here are the rest of the rules:

This event will take place over two screens that will both be manned by the organizers themselves. Therefore, we don't feel that there is a need for the self-policing rules seen at larger events.

Super Smash Bros. BRAWL Rules

* 3 Stock

* 8 minute timer

* Items are set to "off" and "none"
*Semi-Final and final rounds of the winner's bracket will be best two out of three matches with one on one battles. All other rounds will be four-way free-for-alls. F the organizers feel that multiple individuals are “teaming up” repeatedly on others, action will be taken.
*In the event of a dispute, controller ports will be selected by Rock-Paper-Scissors
*Stages will be chosen by the organizers. No single stage will appear twice in a row.
*If the timer runs out, the victor is determined first by stock and then by percentage.
Metaknight's Infinite Cape glitch is banned.
*Stalling is banned

Super Smash Bros. MELEE Rules

We are democratic around here, so at our events if the attendees don't like a particular rule, we hold a vote to determine if the rule is to be changed. We certainly could hold a vote at the event to see if people prefer one-on-one over free-for-all and act accordingly.

I guess I'll go

ib4controller johns
No controllers is kinda weird. If they're 3rd party or not good controllers, that would probably mess melee up some.

Wiimote is standard for Wii. You may choose whether or not to use the nunchuck. On GameCube they will be official Nintendo Controllers; I've had a few bad experiences with third parties on Melee myself.

Everyone will play both games. Single sign-up.

As of today there are still spots available. Entries are limited to 20 due to parking and space concerns.

Hmmm, I'd be more willing to come if the ruleset was the SBR standard, but I don't really want to drive all the way out there without knowing beforehand what the format will be. Also, why aren't you allowing outside controllers? Other tourneys require entrants to bring their own controller, so this seems kind of weird to me.

Wish I were coming. Guys just show up and have fun, seriously. I've won a 90+ person Melee FFA/items tournament, an items all brawl tournament, and taken second in an all brawl tournament. If you are good you will do well/place accordingly, just make sure to practice.

It'll be fun and when you are there you can educate the guy on how the Smash community normally does stuff so future events are more normal. Doing something different here and there won't be the end of the world and there may be some new faces we could get to join our Columbus scene.

Yea that part sucks. I lost the gamestop opening day tournament cause of the **** wiimote. Somehow I doubt you can be stopped though from plugging in a GC controller.

Yep GameCube controller is OK for the Wii. After some discussion, we will allow outside controllers that are first party. All will be inspected. No mods!

We've run into a bit of a situation regarding memory card for the GameCube. We know we have a memory card with everything unlocked sitting around, but now we can't find it. The first person to bring a GameCube memory card with a Melee file with all characters unlocked gets half off their entry fee. Thanks!

Thanks to everyone for coming out! We hope you all had a great time; it was great to meet everyone. We also got a lot of great ideas for future events. Our next planned event is not Smash related, but it may be of interest anyway: Nintendo World Championships 1990, er 2010. We'll be using a reproduction of the same 3-game cartridge used at the 1990 event. Most likely it will be in late September. Our next Smash Brothers tournament s slated for early 2011.

Once again, thanks!

Is there a tournament bracket or any tournament results for this tournament that can be displayed. For Ohio Power Ranking Purposes?

Yes, we can do that. It will take a couple of days. Instead of doing brackets, we ended up adding up the rounds won and lost by each player and tallying them at the end of the night. The spreadsheet is a little confusing to the general public right now, so we need some time to reformat it to be easy for everyone to interpret. Pictures from the event will also be up soon at supergameteam.com and the Super Game Team Facebook page.

I saw what you guys were going for: deteremin the best smasher.

Sadly, this won't get many players and some players might even feel ripped off if they went to a tournament expecting one game, but then found out they had to win in all three.

Luckily there are several ways to do this without hurting the community or your venue:
$5 entry fee (Though 10 isn't that bad is it means free food like this one had). Cheaper tournament usually means more locals.

Do regular brackets for each game THEN take the top 2 players and throw them into a round robin of all the games (tally the score based on stock left and percent left). Try to do prizes for the top 3 if there are more than 12 players. Top two if there are more than 7, then top 1 for well lower than 7.

Also, try to keep the format consistent: if you start with 1v1s, then the rest of the tournament should be 1v1s.

Lastly, research the community (on sites such as here and SRK) for rule sets and formats. They are platers/TOs that have been successful in throwing tournaments that aren't just fun for the die hards, but a good value for the "casual" tournament goers. Through the years, these people know the best format for these things.

Now with the good....
I like the venue, though we might need a few more TVs plus game systems. Players ARE willing to bring those, all you have to do is ask.
The prizes were good: (store credit) but this store has a VERY good selection of retro stuff and newer games. Also I think you could prolly have them order something if they don't have it (sorry if I'm speaking out of turn).
The free food was great. Let the cooks know I said thanks again.
The TOs were friendly/respectable. Though they didn't know much about the smash scene, they were very eager to learn about the meta-game and why we have such a picky ruleset.

Hopefully I'll be at the next one. (I'll be stopping by to use my prize tomorrow if you guys want to discuss on any of these points any further.)

Thanks. Running a multi-game tournament can be awkward at times, so ideas for easy ways to settle things are appreciated.

Results and Picture

We actually ended up with two winners. The final rounds turned into a stalemate, as one competitor kept winning on Brawl and the other on Melee! It could not be settled.

Winners were Daniel Law and MX with 10 points apiece. Ray Tan had 8 points, TheKiest 7, and COOP01 had 2.

Picture is big, so I don't want to make the forum all goofy. Go here: http://supergameteam.com/events.htm
