It's not the character select screen. It's the bottom left corner of it.
UNDER the actual characters panel. Think about it.
This is mainly a screenshot of the "player 1" rectangle in the bottom left corner.

EDIT: further inspection leads me to believe this is player 2's rectangle.
Because it's blue themed, player 2's colour is blue.
Also, you can see the end of a gamecube controller in the bottom left of the screen.
Meaning there is at least one player before this one.
It would probably be player one.

EDIT AGAIN: I think the pixellation is just part of the background design.
1: It's far too small to be the whole roster, compared to player 2's character rectangle.
2: The colours seem to blend with the background to well.
The actual characters being there would not blend so well with the background colours.
We would've been able to ascertain a few predictions from it too.

I agree completley with SSJ4Kazuki. You can even see the player one slot under the names selection. Player one is using the name "TOM" if you can see.

The thing above Samus is the select screen. You can tell becuase it doesn't match the background well. Also, it's not the whole roster, just a snipped.

Wait a minute. Samus IS PLAYER 2! Samus's backround is blue. And Player 1 is chosing his name, which covers his character. Also the fact that Player1 tag is tom and the tag selection also says tom. Also they are trying to trick you by thinking the name selection is a seperate screen with the character on the right and the name selection on the left, but since its just a part of the screen player 1 is choosing his name and player 2 is chosen samus.

This is just me, but from looking at what appers to be stright lines it looks like we can see somewhat of a board. From thwe looks of it, the characters icons seem to be kind of small. Might mean theres a good amount of characters. Maybe.

That's what I thought, but it seemed too unlikely.

well it could be a decreased size selection screen when you make your name and choose your controller

well also he says "Once it’s entered, choose your name for your character on the character-selection screen before you begin fighting." but he kept the character selection screen hidden

here, I shrunk the image for all of us (ur welcome)

personaly I dont think it looks like anything, its pretty much clear at this point, but it doesnt show much, could be japanese characters but I dont think so since i know a bit about Japanese characters.

so, could just be background image, or maybe part of a character's name.
anyone who knows japanese want to come help translate?

It may still be in development. It looks as though player 2 has chosen John as there Tag, and player 1 is still choosing (you can see the controller sticking out on the bottem left of the name box.

This is pretty much pointless.Even if it were possible to deciphere a way to remove the pixelation from the pictures(Which it isn't by the way),it would reveal nothing.Compare and contrast the character selection screen from when you start SSBM.The bottom characters are all ? marks, which will reveal nothing but what those ? marks can potentially be.

There are several cases from which we were once able to speculate, but not from a pixelated image.Face it,Sakurai has beat us to the punch. No speculation can be drawn from this, period.

what if they decided to have the little boxes for the characters pop up? like u go over mario's little pic and it zooms in. no basis for it other than, if that pixelated stuff if the char. select board.. liek ppl have mentioned, it is kinda small.

WOW, I can't believe how STUPID some people are. Did it ever occur to you tha this may be a small section of the charatcer select screen, not the whole thing. IT"S BLURRED OUT, THERE ARE NO JAPANESE CHARACTERS.

It is a screenshot of P1 and P2's selection boxes. P1 is selecting a name, P2 is playng as samus, with his name as John. anything that might be of any importance whatsoever is pixelated out of the cropped section that is displayed.

THAT IS ALL.

Right, I don't think anybody was saying anything other than that. No need to get your undies in a bundle. :)

Ive done some playing with the image.
There is still a fair bit of information in the picture - but the resolution isn't high enough to be able to tell you anything special.
The only real conclusion I can draw is that the character portraits have a border-box similar to those seen in Melee - and that they have been cut + pasted all over the tops of one-another. Sadly this doesn't tell anyone much....but I can tell you that the character portrait sizes seem to take up 5 places across the span of that image, so I'd wager a guess at the select screen being either 9 - 10 characters wide by who knows how high.

If you would like to replicate what I've done - in photoshop I tweaked the contrast and saturation to get a better image out of the top segment. With copy of the same image open I desaturated and matched the tones of the character select segment (using the selections from the desaturated image on the original) - and aligned the rounded looking 'borders' to produce the properly set boxes.
I don't feel it's possible to do any more than this however as the information on the picture doesnt really tend to be all from the segment shown - and whatever is there is too deformed to make out.

Despite the fact Sakurai mentioned the Character Select Screen was still hidden.

the little thing to the lower left, the blue object mistaken for a gcube controller can't be one because the format on p2's screen has that part in the middle. noting that the picture of samus isn't completely finished, i would gues that that's a part of the design that was never intended to be in the picture

Top right looks kinda like yoshi. The gamecube controller is there to show what the player is using.

Why's that?
Because developers claim that Duke Nukem Forever is near completion, so why can't Sakurai tease us with something like a character selection screen? Could it just be that Sakurai just made a mock-up, or has only implemented the GUI for the name selection thing?

Oh, and it is a GameCube controller on the left. I just looked better, and behind the name selection screen I can see (faintly) Tom as the chosen name, plus the rest of the Cube controller.

ah. that makes sense. it looked to me like the whole thing was just one person selecting his name and character instead of 2.
