The blue line heads off the line of the box.

Also, the black pixel on here is too high:

The CSS leak is dead, time to move on.

Since discussion on the leak seems over, I took a crack at this... rate it.

Doubters? Do I see doubters?!
MUST. MURDER. LEAK.

I'd like to bring up more inconsistencies I tried to a while ago and Crashboards wouldn't let me:

-Look at the black squares in the corners that connect the right and bottom gray outlines on each roster icon. The ones on the bottom row are dark, the ones on the middle row are light, and Ridley's is a small, misshapen, dark dot.
-The bottom gray outline of Ridley's box is thicker than the rest's
-The right gray outline of Ridley's icon is thicker, lighter, and more towards the left than it is on the bottom half, across the blue outline.

Mr. Leaker did an OK job at first, but he rushed Ridley, and now he's debunked.

Party? But I want it to be real.
I like Ridley.
I like Ridley too, but he'll get in based off his own merits.
He didn't need this leak. Plus, I'd rather play as a purple Ridley!
But I wouldn't want there to be a possibility of inside information getting handed out, leaks, just in general, are inherently bad IMO. Sure, if there was a roster leak with Ghirahim and Anna I'd be excited, but there goes the surprise factor, and instead of getting introduced to the characters by epic trailers, you see a picture. It's not better.
Sakurai has attempted to make Ridley a surprise character at this point.
So when he's revealed, it will be that much more satisfying!

I have been speculating in the 48-52 range for quite awhile. I feel as though it is the most ideal range.
Same here. Even without the CSS leak. it doesn't affect my thoughts on how many characters I think we'll see in this game. I'm thinking more of the 49-52 range myself.

Why does that one addition make a difference...?

....No, Miis don't count as a slot.
Yes I am counting Mii as a character.

I say forty-nine because I find it unlikely we'll see more than three cuts for this game and it assumes Mewtwo returns and it also assumes that the hidden newcomers are ones leaked by Sal Romano and no one else.

I suppose that's a good range, realism and optimism is the best way to go after all. I'm expecting 6 cuts at the very most.

With or without a slot, they'd still be official fighters right?

More like realistic, if they can't being all the vets back, then there's no way we're getting 60.
Why bring up 60?
You're at 45. Halfway between 40 and 50.
You realize your roster is only an increase of 6 characters from Brawl...
And we already have 6 newcomers, so how about your cuts-
Let's see... looks like you cut Squirtle, Ivysaur, Lucas, and Snake
I completely disagree with Lucas. He's still the protagonist of the most recent Mother game and people want to see him back. His fans bring up how he was planned for Melee and was a higher priority than Ness in Brawl, but I don't think that means much. Veterans don't need very much justification. They just need to not be Pichus or Young Links, or a special case like what happened with Pokemon Trainer and what may happen to Snake. And Lucas is no special case from Toon Link, Ike, and Lucario... or even Wolf, which you have.
But if you do believe in 4 cuts, that means 4 more newcomers:
I see you chose Pac-Man, Mii, Palutena, and...
and...
I don't see a 4th. I must have messed up somewhere, oh well.
Palutena and Pac-Man are the 2 most likely characters IMO, so it's great that you have them- but there's a lack of... so much more.
-Am I really supposed to believe we're not getting an Awakening character and Fire Emblem will stay at 2?
-Am I really supposed to believe we're not getting a DK newcomer, and DK will stay with 2 characters?
-And no more new series either? Shulk? Isaac? No retro newcomer? Nothing?
I think these things are all more likely than Miis.
I'd rank Chrom 3rd after Pac-Man and Palutena, and one of the DK characters after that (K Rool/Dixie)

It looks like you are being unrealistically pessimistic, and I only like semi-realistic rosters and unrealistically optimistic rosters...
So: incomplete/10
It feels incomplete to me, with so many characters missing. Especially Lucas and an Awakening character.

Eh. I would either consider Miis to not have their own slot. They have all the slots, simply because their addition would render every other character pointless.
Sakurai doesn't count by slots, he counts by characters. That explains why we have thirty-nine characters in Brawl according to Sakurai instead of thirty-five.
I suppose that's a good range, realism and optimism is the best way to go after all. I'm expecting 6 cuts at the very most.
I can understand four IF we lose someone due to time constraints (Wolf or Jigglypuff) but we are not losing more than that. Sakurai is doing his best to keep veterans in and he has expressed a more negative attitude towards cuts this time.

I do agree that realistic, yet optimistic behavior is the best way to go, at least for me. I'm hardly afraid of whatever disappointment may come, but at the same time, don't have crazy expectations.

He's probably thinking they should do that if Miis moveset's are customizable based off the other characters. If they had their own moveset, it would make some sense to have them on the main roster, but it might still be easier just for selection purposes to find your own Mii on your select box, just like how you select your name. Which is more convenient than a name box on the roster. And speaking of convenience, since the customize-ability is offline-only, Miis off the roster would be convenient so both modes could have the same roster. This would also make what we've seen make sense. They aren't getting represented as a series with their stage, but by a specific game, and the icon would deconfirm other characters, but the Gematsu Leak says they're playable, and this way they'd be playable without needing to be cast into a certain series, with it's own icon. They don't actually represent a series anyways, it's a customize-able avatar, and I would personally hate to see them treated as anything more in Smash Bros.

Ayyeee... a fine ten minutes those were... I'll address the stuff you brought up when I go to the speculation thread, so I'll just talk about this stuff here. Yes I realize my roster could use an update, but I would hardly consider it pessimistic; all the signs say that while SSB4 will have a big roster, it will not be a big jump from Brawl and thus not around 60, yes some people are building their houses on that sand. 4 cuts is not only reasonable, but also the most likely or perhaps 3, 6 cuts is where my pessimistic side is.

well, if you guys need me, I'll be over here in this corner, not believing any leaks whatsoever...
I wouldn't just debunk them without thinking, though. With the Best Buy demos on the way, I have little doubt that it'll get out prior to releasing. Those are just begging to be leaked.

My favourite part of the veteran reveals is that I have an expectation of what they're going to look like in HD, but then they get shown off and holy polygons they look ten times better than what I expected. In terms in who's left, I'm stoked to see Ganondorf due to his level of detail. Even Falco/Wolf/Captain Falcon have enough design elements that could look sooo beastly in HD. Dang I'm even excited for the Ice Climbers' fur effects. Also, for Jigglypuff I'm really hoping they rework the model to look like its more modern proportions. I mean...

....Brawl's model just looks so dead. And soulless. ...and murderous.
I would love to see how expressive she'll be in this game.

I still cannot believe that it took 20 pages for me to debunk this leak for a single pixel. But you have to admit, this leak was well made.
I can't believe you didn't see me point out the exact same thing several pages back.

Hey guys, this is my roster, I go into a fair bit of explaining of my roster and who I think is a guarantee to be included/cut so this post may seem a bit long winded.

I'm basing my roster on the assumption that a series will have a maximum of 5 reps (Mario, LOZ and Pkmn) and that the roster will reach 44 characters (with a random character selection icon added to make 45 selections).

Confirmed veterans will have blue borders, Confirmed newcomers receive green borders.
What i perceive as the probable unconfirmed Veterans are in red, likewise my probable unconfirmed newcomers are yellow
My selections which i feel have a potential to be cut have a purple border.

View attachment 14600

My cuts from this roster include:

Ivysaur, Squirtle, Snake and R.O.B

The only possible inclusion into the roster i see is R.O.B who is about a 50% chance of being included or cut in my opinion.

Wolf and Lucas I feel are the most likely to be dropped from the roster i have created, however i felt that Ike would have been dropped in favor of Chrom and he was confirmed today proving that everyone is still in with a chance. I give Wolf and Lucas a 50% chance of being included.

All the other unconfirmed veterans I feel have a more than likely chance of returning, particularly Ness, Cpt Falcon and Jiggly due to their consistent involvement in the games, perhaps only not being announced yet to maintain their unlocked status, I am about 95% sure of these characters being included.

Ganondorf, Wario and Meta Knight I feel are going to be a included in the game as they are well established characters in their respective series and have generated enough of a fan base within the smash community to continue their use. 80% likely.

G&W and Falco I deem as more likely than the Ice Climbers but I am not as sure of their inclusion as I am with the previous list of probable veterans. G&W mainly because of his quirky nature, and the possibility of being outgrown by other newcomers like Wii fit trainer, and if you believe in rumors, the Mii and Chorus men. Falco will only not be included if Wolf stars and there will be only 2 Star Fox series reps. Ice climbers I feel will be included still however they will probably need a bit of an overhaul to coincide with the other characters random factors being reduced. I give G&W and Falco a 70% and ice climbers a 65%.

The only newcomers I feel have a more than decent chance are Shulk, Chrom and Palutena, particularly the latter 2.
Chrom (or at least another awakening rep) just seems logical to be included in this game. Fire Emblem Awakening was amazing, and sales proved that, and if Nintendo was to reward its best games with more exposure in its spin off titles it has to include Chrom.
Palutena follows the same line of thinking, with the revival of the kid icarus series, having Pit fight by himself is not the way to go. Besides, Palutena has been trolled way too much to not be included, whether it be unconfirmed leaks, her pseudo trophy or even showing off pits final smash not including her, it would be a major kick in the nads to find out she will not be included.
Besides never playing Xenoblade, from what I have read and heard from the game, and with another game in the series coming up, I feel he is a deserved smash possibility. If other characters have been included because of only 1 game, surely Shulk matches those previous inclusions.
These three veterans i give a 70% chance of inclusion.

Honorable mentions go to King K.Rool, Ridley and Pacman. If there is an increase in the roster size, the door is well and truly opened to the possibility of these 3 being included, however I cant see them being included with a roster at 44. Also to mention Palutena being trolled and not included, however not mentioning the high troll rate ridley fans have had to endure would not be fair either, however i feel Ridley will only be a boss. King K.Rool would be in the game if he was given an opportunity to star in the recent Donkey Kong games (and if Dixie or Cranky gets added over him it actually would not surprise me). Pacman I think only lacks in a proper moveset, he is too basic for my liking to be included as a fighter, although if im wrong I wont hold a grudge, they managed to make extensive movesets for Ice Climbers and ROB despite not really having much to go off originally. I rate their chances at 40%.

There we have it anyway, my extensive reasoning over why a character is more likely to be included than another giving myself certain parameters and limitations. In the small possibility that I am correct, it means that only 14 characters are yet to be revealed, which is about a 3rd of my hypothetical roster.
I think your number, 44, is a realistic estimate. I'd be surprised if we got many more than that.
I can't see ROB being cut; especially not since Ike was revealed. Characters with unique movesets are unlikely to be taken out, I think.

As much as I'd like Shulk, I can't see him being added unless the Gematsu leak is real.

Sakurai said in an interview with a Japanese magazine called Nintendo Dream.

The Japanese Wikipedia page for Brawl states:Here's a translation I found somewhere "Lucas was supposed to be in the previous game ''Super Smash Bros. Melee'', but due to how that worked out with Mother 3's eventual cancellation on the N64, he was cut. With his game coming back and being released on the GBA in 2006, he is in the game this time around -Brawl-. With that in mind, we had planned to scrap Ness, but because Mother 3 never got a release outside of Japan, Ness is back once more". But you can put it in Google translate if you want.

And the source is there, the April 2008 issue of Nintendo Dream.
Answering pretty late, since wasn't around, but thre interview in the original quote was referring to Ness being cut from Melee. There is a reason an information about Ness cut from Brawl isnt around anywhere else, and that's the reason. Now, please, stop spreading disinfo.

... I'm actually starting to really doubt that Snake was cut, or that anyone besides Squirtle and Ivysaur really have any realistic chance of being cut, or even a logical reason to be cut, now that all of the characters who were "obviously not returning" are being confirmed.
Kojima's comment more or less reads to me now like "Oh, I totally don't know whether Snake is in Smash Bros. Cuz I'm not making that game. *snicker* Hay Sakurai, who I haven't spoken to at all about this since Brawl, *teehee* please include Snake, who was E3 megaton worthy the first time, at the last minute! *giggle* I would just be soooo disappointed if you didn't even contact me to ask about it and decided not to include Snake for no real reason."
Experience tells me, in cases like these, that no means no and I don't know means I'm not supposed to tell you.
So unless Nintendo told Sakurai, "No Metal Gear on Wii U? No more Snake in Smash Bros." I don't see a logical reason for not even talking to Kojima.

See, after E3 last year, I feared that Lucario, Ike, and Snake were at risk due to their creators deciding that once was enough. Well, those fears were gladly unfounded in Lucario and Ike's cases.
After Lucario was confirmed, I felt silly for doubting the return of Brawl's unique characters, and I started to view Ike's return as more likely than not.
Well, Ike's back, and Toon Link's return suggests that even "pseudo-clones" like Lucas and Wolf have a good shot at being revamped rather than replaced.
The same goes for the two-time and three-time vets, and especially for anyone with a unique moveset, including ROB.
There is literally no logical reason to not include them after all the work that went into designing them.
The only arguments I have ever seen against them are "Because Mewtwo" and "They aren't relevant anymore" and my personal favorite, "I don't really like that character and I don't know anyone who does."
Yep. Makes sense.

This isn't Mario Kart.
"Hay guys, we need to keep the roster limited to 30, but to keep things fresh, let's replace most of the characters with babies, Koopalings, and metals! The fans will be thrilled!"

No, I think the roster in this game will be Brawl - Squirtle and Ivysaur + Mewtwo + around 10 newcomers (conservative estimate).
I'm calling it now that SSB4 will have fewer cuts than Brawl. Four at the most, but I expect two or MAYBE three, depending on Snake, and if Sakurai and Kojima aren't friends anymore.
