Honestly, I think it'd be kinda dumb to cut Lucas. It'd be like...

SSB: Ness
SSBM: Ness
SSBB: Ness and Lucas
SSB4: Ness

What, suddenly Lucas isn't worth the effort? He was just some kind of fan service for the MOTHER 3 fans cause it was a new game? Cutting him now would be a ****ing tease. Not to mention he's plenty more interesting than Toon Link, moveset-wise.

Toon Link feels more unique than Lucas, in my opinion.
Link and Tink play a lot differently overall.
Ness and Lucas are still very similar.
Truth be told, I find Lucas overrated. His moveset is quite bland: Ness with some Mewtwo thrown in.

In terms of who would be more likely between Ness and Lucas, it'd definitely be Ness.

In terms of who I'd actually prefer to see, I'd actually say Lucas. Purely personal preference, but I actually rather liked playing as Lucas in Brawl. He just felt like a better Ness to me, with those odd Yo-Yo smashes replaced with some deceptively powerful psi blasts, and a rather troll up-special that was great for grabbing Final Smashes.

If the two are so similar, then the literal only thing Ness has going for him is the fact he's a grandfathered in veteran. All opinion of course, but I thought MOTHER 3 was an obviously superior game to EarthBound, and Lucas was a much more developed and interesting protagonist. I don't see an edge in either the game nor the character when comparing EarthBound to MOTHER 3. Hence why I prefer Lucas.

I won't cut five characters, I'll cut six. :p

1.) N
2.) O
3.) B
4.) O
5.) D
6.) Y

Best list 2014. :p
The second O doesn't deserve to be in Smash. It is exactly like the first O. It is a clone. At least D is a semi-clone and plays differently from B.

The only Mother rep we need is Porky Minch. Get rid of Ness or Lucas if you want, Porky is a far better character than either of the Earthbound Boys. He's also a connecting link between the two games so whoever was to go, their game would remain equally represented.

However most players don't want any removals and I doubt that removing one would archaically improve the chances of Porky, like magically Sakurai finds it easier to implement his spider machine. One can dream.

I like both Ness and Lucas... which is more than I can say for Fox and Falco (Wolf is the best).

I'd be okay if Falco got removed and Wolf stayed. I wish that Sakurai would get to adding the series antagonist first before the sidekick or rival.

I want 4 Starfox characters. Yeah I said it. I'm not afraid. I also rip tags off of matresses.

I think Falco as a bigger priority than Wolf makes sense. Falco has been in every title, and Fox leading a team is a bigger theme to the games then his rivalry to Star Wolf.

Not to say that all members of Star Fox should be included before Wolf, but I think it makes sense that Fox's ace pilot comrade was added before Wolf.

I don't think it was prominence or relevance that made Falco the second rep, just convenience. Sakurai made a list of easy clones once he was almost done developing Melee and Falco was a prime candidate to be a clone of Fox. Wolf as a clone doesn't work and actually makes little sense compared to Falco. Although I think if anything, it's because it fits the largely valid pattern Sakurai follows with newcomers, adding the protagonist, then sidekick, then antagonist, more-or-less with every series.

I disagree that Falco was easier to make a clone than Wolf would've been.

I would have thought that Wolf would have worked better as a clone. You know, considering that Wolf looks a lot like Fox and has a similar body shape.

I concede Wolf has a similar body type, but that's not the only thing Sakurai would've taken into consideration. The villain cannot have the same set as the protagonist unless there are very good reasons for it, like if Blood Falcon came in to take Ganondorf's cloned set or something crazy. Wolf's character would've necessitated, as in Brawl, that he is distinguished from Fox. Otherwise it just seems wrong.

Going by the proposed information on Melee's development by cednym, this was precisely why Wolf was overlooked. Because he looked quite too much like Fox.

Yeah, was going to say this. Wolf was originally floated as Star Fox character number two, but Falco was chosen instead not because of importance or whatever, but because his jumping and silhouette made him a more distinct option.

Funny, this is pretty much the first time I've seen an argument about why Falco is a more important character than Wolf. Most people I've seen discuss the subject conclude that Wolf is more important as the leader of a rival group, whereas Falco is interchangeable with Peppy and Slippy as a good guy teammate, with none of those three being outright more important than the others (until later games, perhaps).

When I was a kid playing Star Fox 64, Falco stood out to me as a rival more than Wolf did. I got the whole rivalry concept between Fox and Wolf, but I felt like he was just a slightly cooler boss. Fox and Falco had the whole competition thing going the whole time, while I viewed Slippy as a best/supportive friend and Peppy as a mentor. I viewed Falco as the best pilot of the team, with his only shortcoming to Fox being a lack of social grace; probably wouldn't make a good leader cause of his inflated ego.

When Melee was released, the only Star Fox games were the original and 64, and Wolf wasn't in the original. So Falco stood out to me more.

I just felt like I should point this out.

You know how Sakurai said that the ideal number of characters for Smash Bros is 20?

Melee's roster without the clones is exactly 20 characters.

Melee confirmed for being the best Smash.

This is a great find.

I imagine what Sakurai truly meant was in terms of balance. Once you get past twenty, the roster becomes almost uncontrollably balanced. Too many factors, never enough development time to acknowledge them all. Obviously, a Smash Bros without Wario, Dedede and Diddy is not complete. But I can see why he would say that. Although he may have been misquoted as he always is, who knows.

Smash could've survived without Sonic. I was sooooo hyped about Sonic's inclusion, but at the same time...I would be fine if SSB was just Nintendo characters.

More characters doesn't automatically mean less balance, the problem with past games is that Sakurai handled all of the balancing himself. It wasn't the fault of the roster size, Sakurai just put too much on himself, especially since roster balancing requires a lot feedback.

Smash 4 has patches on it's side though, and Sakurai has already said he is willing to make use of patches if necessary.

I can understand that, but seeing as how Sonic has countless close ties with Nintendo, he's never getting cut from Smash

Might as well just give it time, as I'm sure he'll be a second-party Nintendo character in about five years, seeing how buddy buddy SEGA and Nintendo are.

If Snake had never been revealed, Sonic always would have remained in what can now be considered "Banjo-Kazooie territory," where his inclusion would be nice, but basically a pipe dream that the game doesn't need in order to be of quality.

He might have made it into SSB4 regardless with all the other stuff that happened prior, like all the Mario & Sonic Olympic Games and the Nintendo-exclusive Sonic titles.
