If Rayman got in, half of the third parties in Smash would be called __ Man.

What's the deal with that?

We'll have to see if Japan's love for Yokai Watch translates over to the west.
For now though Jibanyan is far from being an iconic enough third party character worldwide to get in Smash.

I'm skeptical that Yokai Watch will maintain consistent popularity. We've seen Mon fads rise and fall like Digimon and Yu-Gi-Oh.

"But those became popular again after a few decades, what if the same applies here?"
Speaking as a Digimon fan, calling it "popular" is a stretch - it definitely has a cult following, but it's a shadow of its former self.

Can't speak for Yu-Gi-Oh though.

I was playing Strawman for a reason

I have 2 friends who love it, and apparently it's one of the few things that kept Konami alive. Magic the Gathering and Hearthstone beat it up though

I was wondering, with Majora's Mask being part of Nintendo's "pantheon" with the release of its remake on 3DS, what do you think about Skull Kid's odds for 5mash ?

I'll honestly be okay to his inclusion, but I fear he'll have a hard time against what the Zelda's future will have until that.

Almost every Zelda characters suffer the same problem. Either insignificant appearances or a one-off villain

Yeah, from what I've seen of friends who play it, it still has a cult fanbase but it's fairly tame.

I think in general a franchise like Yokai Watch is gonna struggle to get its foot in the door internationally - the fact that it's obscenely popular in Japan doesn't necessarily translate to instant western success. One Piece is (sadly) a great example of that. Pokemon succeeded due to both being the first of its kind and being aggressively marketed to westerners, with the games and anime coming at the same time. Now it's at a point where people who grew up playing Red and Blue have kids to share the series with, and it will continue ad nauseam.

Skull Kid's importance to the franchise is very overblown by his fans - I doubt Sakurai would ever seriously consider the character.

Just out of curiosity, who do you think is the worst character in smash 4? ...Palutena for me. :/
Gameplay-wise: probably Mii Swordfighter (though personally I don't like using Earthbound characters or Little Mac because of their recoveries)

Otherwise: Dark Pit

Me.

EDIT: So, do you think Pokemon should have another DLC rep?
So much for talking about Pokemon.
Okay I won't be a sourpuss. No I don't think Pokemon should get more characters as DLC, everyone else that has been in other smash games don't seem important enough to make it back.

Main roster:
:4mii:
Their execution as a set of characters was just awful and they aren't fun to play as.

DLC:
:4feroy:
Don't like him in Melee. Don't like him here. Yet I'm a completionist for rosters in fighting games. Have fun being another punchbag alongside :4charizard: and :4duckhunt:

Yeah, Palutena is... bad. Which is unfortunate as she was one of my requested characters, and her bland defaults mean I'll pretty much never use her in For Glory.

As for the character who I like playing as the least? Of all the newcomers, :4wiifit: most definitely. Awkward hitboxes and a generally unexciting playstyle.

Dr. Mario... Its like having Mario, but without all the defensive options, speed, or the ability to meteor smash with that spike.

Little Mac is also really bad. Like really, really, bad.

I just hope in a future iteration Palutena's default specials are mixed up a bit.

Because words can't expressed my loathing towards her default specials.

Okay I'm ready, let's talk about Pokemon.
That... isn't really how discussion works. If you want to talk about something specific about Pokemon, you should probably lead off with something more specific.

Alright, I think Squirtle and Ivysaur aren't important enough to come back. They were part of a theme, and don't really have enough clout to stand on their own as characters.

If a different Pokemon had been included in 64 instead of Jigglypuff, excluding Mewtwo and Meowth, who do you think it would've been?

Yokai-Watch consistently beats Pokémon games in sales these days over in Japan, though that doesn't mean the same will happen over here in the West. I suspect a stark, sad Dragon Quest dichotomy in terms of sales in the two countries.

I watch this guy called Clyde Mandelin and his wife at a Twitch channel called Poemato CX. He's the one who directed the amazing fan translation for Mother 3 and is the head of EarthBound Central, the sister-site to Starment.net. Being a Mother fan, following him on that channel led to me discovering the game and it looks extremely fun. Very well-polished and unique. I don't want to give too much away but I'll say that, despite the similar premises (catching colorful monsters to fight for you), the game plays nothing like Pokémon. I wouldn't be that surprised if someone from that game made it into Smash even just as a trophy given its huge popularity in the Land of the Rising Sun at the moment. Perhaps at the very least as a Japan-exclusive trophy if Sakurai still wants to keep that a thing.

Charizard.

That depends is this character put in the same development predicament as Jiggs was? Meaning that was the team low on time? If so then no probably not because Jiggs got in due to being popular and because it has a very similar body type to Kirby (A character they had already programed and etc) No other pokemon comes to mind that fits those requirements.

:4rob: is probably the most forgettable character to me in all of Smash (to be honest, sometimes I forget he wasn't cut in 4). I've never been excited by him as a fighter, he lacks much of anything of a characterization (outside of the Subspace Emissary, which I like but isn't enough for me to be jazzed about him being on the roster), he's just... there. Don't hate him, don't like him, just complete apathy.

Hell, it's been three games and he still doesn't have a stage.

Gengar, Squirtle, Charizard, Rhydon, or Poliwhirl.

:4charizard:, assuming that wings can work in Smash 64(:4pit: not getting in Smash 64 because of wings is a mere rumor, but it's not unlikely that wings can't work in the first Smash). Otherwise, probably either :001:, :004:, or :squirtle:.

Personally I don't think it would've been a starter for the same reason Ash was given Pikachu. So that there wouldn't be bias towards any one in particular. The only reason Charizard got in to Smash 4 solo was to salvage some of the Trainer character...

No, hypothetically there would be no technical restrictions or time constraints. But only a single Pokemon, so not PKMN Trainer.

You find the answer from my avatar.
Is that your prediction or is that just your desire? :smirk:

Charizard.
See I don't think so. I think Charizard only got in after Sakurai settled on the Trainer idea and then decided Gen 1 would be the best for it. Without the Trainer, I don't think Charizard would've been included.

Maybe, but I think Charizard being a boxart Pokemon, along with his massive popularity and role in the anime, would definitely be on the table.

Charizard might seem like the easy answer now... but no one was even expecting him prior to Brawl... and Sakurai did toy with Johto starters being playable before the Kanto starters (in Melee), so I don't think it would've been him.
