We were, but it's times like these, that things go a liiiitle outta hand. Just a little.
Well actually Tails is/was the most realistic out of all unrealistic. Remember this?

Smash actually admitted "It was very close, but time constraints did not allow us to continue with the idea" seems to me this was a possibility? But then again they never did put Tails. And anyway this was a long time ago

Lol, about the Assist Trophy thing. I can dream but maybe there'll be dlc that turns some assist trophies into playable characters! They could just be disabled if they are played. Unlikely but... Why not? And.. By which you can tell by my avatar that I REALLY want this to happen! Can you believe it's been almost a year since Saki and Lyn were disconfirmed that I still can't get over them?
Well, I can always hope for Isaac to get the Little Mac treatment :D

Here's my own idea; which characters you don't want in a new Smash game.

1. Pichu (sorry, but cuteness doesn't excuse a bad gimmick. )
2. Wario (does nobody think we have enough Mario characters already?)
3. R.O.B (Trojan Horse =/= Fitting for Smash)
4. Dark Samus/Sylux/most other suggested Metroid representatives (either too similar to Samus or just too non-notable)
5. Dark Pit (the worst case of a clone character; he has nothing but maybe a Final Smash and maybe the Electroshock Arm to make him different. Either get rid of him entirely or give him his own damn moves.)

And since everyone's making unrealistic wishlists;

5. Bomberman (we don't have someone who primarily uses bombs on this roster, so it'd be a unique playstyle)
4. Rayman (well, he's at least in a Smash game in some capacity...)
3. Wolf O'Donnell (no, a pallate lookalike for Fox and some custom moves are not "just like having him in". He's only on the "unrealistic" list because Sakurai seems to think Star Fox isn't very important to Nintendo's history)
2. King K.Rool (come on, he's the most notable Donkey Kong antagonist, he already has a moveset and pretty much anybody who knows about DKC knows King K. Rool! The only thing putting him down is that he hasn't been in a main-series Donkey Kong game for a while.)

Ridley (he's the primary antagonist of Metroid, he's Samus' mortal enemy and he'd be a unique fighter to play as; claims of being a Charizard clone are not using his character right, just his appearance. Vicious space pirate dragon =/= 4-foot tall orange and blue dragon, after all. King K. Rool unrealistic? On the contrary, he may be a little irrelevant but he deserves a spot as much as Bowser. I mean, he's the main villain. I'm quite tired of seeing him and Dixie as mere trophies

I don't think "who do you not want" is going to end well. Just asking for rage. And wolf as unrealistic? really?

And wolf as unrealistic? really?

By Sakurai standards, yes. Plus, Wolf hasn't been relevant because StarFox itself sort of died after Command; I imagine that, if we get more character DLC aside from Mewtwo, that Wolf will probably be DLC when the new game comes out as a promotional tool (since Fox and Falco use Star Fox 64 3D as their promotional website thing).

Remember that Sakurai is the man who was flat-out trolling the fanbase throughout 3DS/WiiU's development; the Pyrosphere shadow teaser, the "loss" of Zero-Suit Samus, and many other things.
This man knows no mercy when it comes to trolling us along.

Ooh that's a tough one, considering I was like 11 when it came out.
All I remember wanting back in brawl was Tetra and Toon Link, specifically from Phantom Hourglass because that's the game I fell in love with at the time.
But now, when I think about it I would've wanted Palutena too, because I actually do her old design, a lot

But I'm fairly certain these would be my top 5 for SSB4 without a doubt

3. R.O.B. (I was a fan before Brawl, and this only made me love him even more)
4. Lucas (a pleasantly unexpected surprise)
5. Wolf (though I didn't realise this until the end of Brawl's lifespan)

Smash 4:

1. Palutena (my most wanted newcomer)
2. Lucina (did not expect it, maximum hype)

4. Shulk (though I didn't realise it 'til I saw his trailer)

Let's see.

Around the time of Brawl's release I was rather new to console gaming, so my Nintendo knowledge was rather limited.
1. Pokémon Trainer (A 3-in-1 Pokémon package was simply irresistible)
2. Wario (Was just getting into WarioWare)
3. ROB (I knew him from Mario Kart DS, and was a surprise to see him here)
4. King Dedede (Knew him beforehand, became one of my favourite characters soon after.)
5. Ike (He was an insta-main the moment I tried him out.)

Smash 4
1. Robin (Wanted a Fire Emblem newcomer badly, but wasn't really happy about Chrom. Lo and behold)
2. Rosalina (Desparately wanted a Mario newcomer.)
3. Bowser Jr. (Was not expecting the Koopalings to tag along. Again, became an immediate favourite)
4. Pac-Man (Love his trailer and his arcade era design. Ironically was a Pac-hater before.)
5. Dr. Mario (Liked him as a child, wanted him as a costume. Very happy to see him get a separate slot.)

Smash 4:

1. The only character I actively wanted who got in, he didn't disappoint.
   
2. Tied with Mega Man for best trailer. Pretty much my new favorite to play as.
   
3. An absolute joy and the moment of fourth wall breaking in his trailer won me over.
   
4. Murdered Chrom.
   
5. Had never played his games, but his trailer was hype. Turned out to be fun.

Brawl:

1. Snake? Snake?! SNAKE!!! Forever remembered as my favorite character in Smash ever. Please come back
   
2. Still one of my favorite movesets. And the Pikmin are so cute. Pikmin 3 is one of the best games ever too.
   
3. He's bloody Meta Knight, nothing else needs to be said.
   
4. Ditto. So much joy at having the full Kirby trio together.
   
5. Best Robot in Smash, move over Blue Bomber.

Melee too because why not:

1. The single most hype worthy addition in Melee.
   
2. Would have been the single most hype worthy addition in Melee, but Falcondorf. Still, Ganondorf.
   
3. Zelda trio complete. The separation from Sheik was really sad, though.
   
4. Fun to play, also is Zelda.
   
5. Uh, Mewtwo is pretty cool. Glad he's coming back.

Bonus retrospective:

1. ObviousNess is obvious.
   
2. Sakurai did create the perfect protagonist, really.
   
3. Zelda is one of my favorite franchises, Link is awesome and fun to play as.

5. He's finally back and it's about time too. Wait, that was Diddy.

...Brawl really had my favorites. Melee was pretty lackluster though.

This is ssb4 only. Brawl was my first smash game, and I did not know smash existed before playing it. (Braces for hate)
1. My most wanted character. (Now it's Amaterasu but that's irrelevant)
2. Funny thing is, I wondered why PAC-Man wasn't in smash right before I saw his confirmation.
3. Was on my wanted list.
4. I thought it was cool she was in.
5. He was on my wanted list but not far up there. It was cool.

Everyone else my reaction was... meh. I had never played their games before. I thought the Wii Fit Trainer's trailer was hilarious though. I did rant because of Greninja's inclusion, but we're friends now :3

1.Xenoblade is my 2nd favorite game ever. and I love his play style
2. Kid Icarus Uprising is my favorite game of all time. (viridi could make a great clone. she has every power palutena does)

4.3rd most wanted because I just played awakening. their trailer was my most hyped moment of smash 4 because it seemed so likely it would be shulk (who I didn't care for as I had not played xenoblade yet and thought he looked generic)
5. my most wanted character in brawl (who I totally forgot about) clown car is infinitely more interesting than paint brush

Only Smash 4 because Brawl was the first Smash game I played and was the first time I got introduced to characters from games that aren't from the Mario, Zelda, Pokemon and Sonic series.

1.I was really interested to see the moveset that the Smash team would create for him and it did not disappoint. Insta-main.

2. Big fan of Animal Crossing so I was happy to see him join the fight.

3. One of the characters I supported during the speculation period and even though I was expecting a paintbrush based moveset, his Koopa Klown Kar moveset is still really fun.

4. Wasn't a big fan until I saw his awesome trailer and now I main him and his inclusion influenced me to buy Xenoblade.

5. Love that she has a Super Mario Galaxy based moveset as that's my favorite Mario game.

Honorable mention goes to because even though he's only an alt costume, I thoroughly enjoyed his inclusion. Would have been better if he had his own slot though.

Agree with @ JamesDNaux . . .why waste energy hoping for other fans to be disappointed? It's one thing to prefer that certain characters receive priority, but another entirely to hope others are just left out to dry. Reminds me of all the jerks salivating at the prospect of characters getting disconfirmed during Pics of the Day...blegh.

Brawl:
1.)Favorite video game character and franchise of all-time, I nearly shed a tear when he was announced for Brawl. He was the only character I wanted in that game.

Smash4:
1.)Supported him even though everyone was against him, a ton of fun to play, and overall my favorite newcomer.
2.)Haven't played much Megaman (definitely plan to do someday), but I have a ton of respect for the series, after all he's been through over the years, it's great to see him with respect.
3.)The leak got me interested in the character and eventually made me buy Uprising, she's one of my favorite characters in the game, and I'm glad she's in.
4.) I never knew I wanted him until I saw him in action.
5.) Never thought much of him during speculation, but I love how he plays, props to all his supporters, you guys were truly underdogs.

#1: : HYYPPPPEEEE!!!!!

An absolute dream come true for me. Robin is one of my all-time favorite characters, and seeing him/her join the battle after so many said that it would never be was a true joy.

Brawl:
1. Diddy, bar none. Basically was supporting him and K. Rool at the time, and to see one-half of those two finally get in was earth-shaking (especially after he wasn't "fresh enough" for Jungle Beat). His reveal got me into actively following the Smash online scene, whereas I was previously only just getting into Melee.
2. Dedede - love the character, despite unfamiliarity with Kirby
3. Wario - enjoyed him and his (Wario Land) games as a child
4. Wolf - great character, put a fun spin on a moveset I otherwise don't enjoy
5. Sonic - indifferent to the character, but man, that hype at the time was just infectious.

Honorable Mentions: Snake, Pokemon Trainer, Lucario

SSB4:
1. Little Mac - Was my fourth most-wanted. Would be number two, but he came at a time when people were obsessing about how "Kong Duo" was a shoo-in for that February reveal. Him shattering that crap with an epic trailer was so great, a little cathartic.
2. Bowser Jr. - My third most-wanted. Would be number one, if not for being underwhelmingly revealed post-3DS release for god knows what reason.
3. Duck Hunt - Thought he was the best possible choice for a retro character, enjoyed his Crusade moveset.

Was not personally hyped for any other characters, but was most happy for the fans of Mega Man (for self-explanatory reasons) and Robin (who had been continually dismissed in places as "delusional" for liking/requesting a character who wasn't a "shoo-in" of Chrom's caliber).

EDIT: Oh, and Pac-Man fans too, since they had people literally going into their thread and calling them "children" for not agreeing that Pac-Man had no chance.
