When this data was actually revealed, it was this major leak that brought us the knowledge of Roy and Ryu. As far as I know we didn't know about the whole "mario" placeholders in the code until this leak. There was Mewtwo, Lucas, Roy, Ryu, and then two placeholders in the code, both labeled "mario" directly underneath the other DLC characters. So as far as we know, those two placeholders are still there and unchanged, and no new placeholders were added.

Because the ballot has reached it's end and we have received no new characters since Royucas, I think those two might be for the ballot. True, they could always just add more space.

I'm still really iffy on why Sakurai did not decide to include Wolf in Pre-Ballot DLC along with Lucas. At least Wolf is in an upcoming game. Lucas's series is long since dead and he's only been in one game. You'd think those two would come as a package. I'm also very bitter that Wolf will have to rely on his massive ballot support to get into the game, meaning that's less room for newcomers when Wolf should have already been here for his own veteran status.

If two more is all we are getting, which is shameful for a 6 month long ballot on a global scale, I hope it's Wolf and King K. Rool.

I was referring to the fact there were no characters at all, in a way, it's better for Wolf because K. Rool could've been slapped in there and the Wolf hype would be completely dead (although, this is a pretty huge hit). Like I said, I'm gonna keep my expectations lower but get hyped for the Ballot in general, no matter what it brings

I thought this was between After Mewtwo and Before Lucas--
1st leak said there were 5 mario slots after Mewtwo.
2nd leak discovered Roy's fanfare and Ryu's fanfare

We put two and two together to make the mysterious 2 slot theory--the Ballot reserved slot theory seemed ludicrous at the time, but here we are. There is a possibility of the Ballot characters having been already worked on and there is also the possibility that the ballot ends and development on them begins soon afterwards, making the slots more likely to be pre-ballot (in terms of actual release).

It will be the first since Iwata's passing in a time where we thought there would be no more Directs.

They will likely pay tribute to Iwata, introduce Kimishima as Nintendo's new CEO most definitely. Because this is such a big Direct, putting Smash news in here would most certainly help it gain massive views. This would also be a perfect time to discuss the Ballot and reveal its winners. In addition, any sort of NX related info would also make this a Direct one to remember, along with the aforementioned information.

So yes, if we do get a Direct soon, I definitely foresee the Ballot Winners being announced there.

I believe that canonically he were hit after Star Fox 64's fight vs Fox, and started to wear an eyepatch. Maybe he's just known like that and he doesn't have his eye injured anymore after all(?).

I always just assumed he had a scouter back in Assault and Command. Doesn't necessarily make sense if he had a literal eye-patch back in 64, though. Of course, a scouter is a type of visual aid, so who knows?

Reliable? Last time we had a reliable source tell us something, Shovel Knight was supposed to be added, and when he didn't, the guy started backpedaling faster than Sonic can run. I doubt we'll get anything for a while, although more news and content would be nice. Maybe they're holding Wolf's reveal for somehting big like the direct.
