Can combos indeed be done by Marth?

I'm starting to think that while a lot harder, Marth can still combo. I don't know why I didn't realize it before, but platforms help Marth's combos A LOT (I probably didn't notice because I don't play a lot of stages with platforms).

Last night I was playing Brawl against a computer because all of my friends were lame and started sleeping and I was really bored. So, after a couple of matches I get paired up with Ike on battlefield. Pretty quick into the fight I actually pulled off a decent combo. On the left side of the stage I did a u-tilt, a u-air which landed me on that platform, another u-tilt, and then a b-air which sent him off the edge. I saved the replay and looked at it again and the entire thing was inescapable (maybe the b-air could have been DI'ed or airdodged, but I'd have to look at it again). After that I edgeguarded Ike and he just sort of died. The computer doesn't recover too well...

But, so do you think that the use of platforms could increase Marth's combo potential when used correctly? Due to the low levels of lag in Brawl it seems possible if done in the way that I did it: Tilt to aerial (landing on a platform), tilt, aerial, edgeguard. There might be a few combos that Marth can do involving platforms, so I wanted to put that out there for those who have given up with Marth comboing. The combos are still short, but the damage it dealt in that battle was really good and gave Ike a lot of knockback.

So, what do you think?

Last night, I pulled off 3 double F-airs followed by a Ken combo on Final Destination. The friend I was playing was a huge noob, but regardless it felt amazing. He didn't want to play anymore, but it was worth it.

In Battlefield, Utilt usually allows for you to try to attempt a midair combo. However, it cannot truly be called a combo since most decent players would probably know how to DI out of your combos (or DI in by mistake).

The only combo I've seen to work a majority of the time in >60% is SH'd double Fair (preferably tippered) into a Fsmash that should be tip'd as well, especially if your opponent made an attempt to DI out, or a Ftilt, which allows you to space properly should the opponent be able to retaliate from it.

I guess when people say you can't combo that well anymore with Marth, they mean an inescapable combo if set-up correctly (like the Ken Combo in Melee for instance). Many of Marth's "combos" in Brawl are escapable or are too situational to be of any use in a typical battle (especially true in higher-leveled matches).

I might be a complete idiot with this post, but I'm pretty sure I've summed up the general consensus of things. Please do tell if I've done the contrary (>_>).

Nair, Fair... SHFFDashCancel... Double Fair...

Ken combo shouldn't be able to be done when playing people with competence, but it exists (better with Charizard, I believe)

I think there is SOME "combo potential" if things are set up right. From what I've seen, if you time the nair correctly, the enemy will be hit by either the first or the second hit even if they air dodge. Because of this, i like to try and chain my attacks to a nair(though after the nair they're usually knocked back too far to do any more). Anyways, just a thought.

This game seems more focused on tech traps than actual true combos, maybe people should focus on them instead

my favourite is close up jump in f air right near the ground so it recovers quicker > f or dsmash depending on character, though it only works at very low percents. looks classy though.

Indeed battlefield is the best stage for Marths hidden combo potential coupled with some of the best aerials.

I hope I can eventually do a Marth Combo video, and have my friend help me put it on Youtube. Sorry, but the stuff up there now is crap. We need Marth to represent, and yes, he can combo.

Definitely. I have pulled off a 0 to 63% combo before (but with the help of one smack off a wall). It went something like Jump-Fair Fair Fsmash (they hit the wall) Jump-Bair...and then I think I caught with a running upsmash as they came down. It happened so fast NEITHER of us knew what happened. ^.^ And I believe it was against mario...?

battlefield is where i mostly combo a lot. predicting yoru opponenets air doges is a pain in the butt but if u do it successfuly it looks nice and racks up major damage.

and the 4 fairs i usually pull off that leands into an off stage game is really cool

That combo I listed eariler I've set up for on Marth as well, so it isn't just that Ike was heavy or anything. This time, however, I did the b-air toward the middle of the stage instead of the edge due to placement issues. But the whole thing is basically inescapable at low percentages. The only possible way to get out of it is to escape it after the first u-tilt, after that things happen too fast for anyone to get out.

For reference, it was:

U-tilt underneath platform, u-air (land on battlefield platform), u-tilt, b-air in the correct direction.

It looks pretty darn amazing when you pull it off. Let me know if anyone else can get this to work/likes the combo.

Fair spam and fthrow->fsmash or fair are mainly what I use. I mainly just play defensively and abuse his range instead of going for big combos though, seeing as how they are far less effective than in Melee.
